Looks like the "Use VGUI Model Browser" isn't even ticked by default, but it still opens it up ![]()

For all those working in the CS:GO SDK, are there any workarounds or alternatives for the VGUI model browser? I had the same problem with Source SDK, but it keeps freezing after I use it once or twice. I know the obvious solution would be to turn off the VGUI browser altogether, but then its such a hassle to sift through all of the directories manually.

Maybe i am picking this up wrong, but are you implying that i am using someone else’s floor plans
?What’s the difference? this is the way i always design my levels

I agree with these points, and I think they're pointing out that design isn't specifically built like a structure. A lot of level design is about communicating spaces that can be understood by the player. It's important to figure out what parts of the level mean, and things that happen to the player.
Also, floor plans are a good foundation, but more visual realization would help substantially, whether its a drawing of the scene or a prototype model/map.
On a side note, I'd recommend playing Deus Ex: HR if you haven't already. They do an excellent job of weaving the player through very structured buildings, and so on.

Yeah this is good advice
Although more the artistic and historical elements rather than engineering parts. Also, just being an active member of Mapcore (or a few other big level design communities) for a few years is a huge plus, you'd be amazed
My path into industry was practising after school and weekends, then from 16-18 years old I worked a 4 day a week job at a hardware store and spent the spare days (mainly nights) modding but ultimately practising. After about 6 years of doing it as a hobby I got my first professional job
Only in the final year as an amateur did I purposely aim at being a professional, when I was quite confident with my abilities. I think that's a big problem today in that most people want results simply too fast. Of cource a few are very talented and with the right advice can get there very quickly, it's not everyone though
Correct! the historical and artistic elements are what matter most to a level designer / artist. But as you say, getting better comes solely from practice. Someone could research level design all they want, but what it comes down to is getting your hands dirty and constantly building up to a goal. To add to your comment about early expectations - it's important for new designers to actually complete a project whether its good or bad. The results are never going to be pretty the first time, but the bridge has to be complete before you could move across the gap and grow.

I studied architecture in college, and still look over books for inspiration. They're always very helpful for designing spaces and understanding our connection to them. Some books that have the building plans are especially helpful. I'm still fascinated by what humans around the world are capable of building in the real world.

Oh ok - yeah, for the longest time I thought it was something I had messed up myself, ha.

Oh wow, yeah that did fix it! I've had it plugged in forever, and didn't even think of it being an issue. Thanks

Hey all,
I've been a bit of a lurker - but i had a question about hammer that i was hoping you guys could help me with! So, it seems that my keyboard shortcuts aren't very responsible. For example, Shift + B doesn't always work immediately. It takes a few tries, but my keyboard is actually working normally. Has anybody had this problem before? Thanks in advance!
