    So, you didn't play MW1?

Just came back from an interview at Simthetiq in Montreal. They make game models for serious games and military simulations. Went super well, was myself and didn't choke on my words heh. Lasted about 20-30 minutes, talked about school, what I did there and such. They really liked the fact that I'm doing mod work as they said it shows my passion and determination to get into the industry. If all goes well with the talk with their accountant (and they say it should), I should have a formal offer by the end of this week! It would be for the summer with possibility of freelancing after that during uni. I should start next week, again if all goes well! Only question I stumbled on was when they asked me what were my salary expectations...couldn't really say as this would be my first job I said. In the end I just asked what would they be offering, and they said 15$/hr, which seems pretty decent to me for a starting salary for a junior? They said usually there'd be an evaluation and increase after 3 months, but since I'm only for the summer, will most likely just be 15.

Just means he flipped the image, no biggie, it isn't mirrored on the model itself =P.

Hmm, maybe have the vehicle more rotated to the right so we can see more of it as well as your texture work on it?

Hmm, was switching between your last version and new one and only difference is that you framed it higher and added logos to banners (logos kinda remind me a bit of Assassin's Creed one)? Still lacks the steampunk vibe you said you needed though!

Freelancing for indie studios is generally where I tend to find myself. Although the pay is lower than being on site with a mainstream studio. Like Warby, I like living where I am.

Thanks for the feedback on the subject guys!

And speaking of which dux, is Unknown Worlds looking for a Modeler or Texture Artist right now? Was thinking of applying, maybe I could go through you ?

  • Quietus, a little mod made for school.

So, last semester, we had 3 months to produce a little mod/little level for a videogame class in school. Released it back in december and might as well post it here, if only a bit late hehe. Read the README below for more info. I was the only team member on it who had some Source experience, but for the others, it was the first time working on a game/mod. So, by all means, it will probably feel very amateurish to you all =P. Looking back on it now though, we could probably do a much better job now. Also, using Maya and Source...ugh. Was such a hassle!

--Quietus-- You are a detective named Hughes who is called to investigate strange events and mysterious murders that have been happening in a small village of New England. The prologue in this short demo is in reality the end of the story. If an eventual game ever comes from it, it'll be up to you to find out how you got to this point and solve the mysteries in this small town.

Your goal in this demo is to find a way out of the room at all costs. Looks for clues, visual cues and audio cues that point you to elements of interests in the room.

    ---------------------------

    Requirements:

    - Any Valve Source games with the Source SDK Base

    Installation:

    - Extract quietus.zip to your Steam/steamapps/SourceMods folder and restart Steam to play

    Known issues:

    - Ragdoll of corpse deforms pretty badly. Weren't able to get a good result after MANY hours of trying. If anyone has information on how to fix this, feel free to contact us.

    - Some bounding box issues here and there that you can find if you play around with all the items.

    - Probably some more.

    ----------------------------

This was a small mod produced for a videogame class in the span of 3 months with Maya 2009. A heavy emphasis was put in the visuals, ambiance and atmosphere of the place since we are in a 3D Animation program. Gameplay-wise, it is a first-person horror puzzle adventure. Solve the little puzzles and get to the end to complete the prologue.

Well...seems like I just landed my first *substantial* freelance job on the upcoming X-Com remake, Xenonauts, as a 3D Scenery Artist through one of my classmates. Not industry rates by any means, but it's something, good chance to expand portfolio and work on a game people are looking forward to.

So, the job search isn't going so good as noone seems to be looking for juniors in Quebec right now. I've still got university as a backup at the NAD Centre, so it isn't so bad. However, I've started looking for paid freelance jobs as a games artist to do during the summer and during uni. Other than game-artist.net, gameartisans or conceptart.org, any other site you'd recommend checking out for freelance opportunities in games? I've checked out the outsourcing companies as well such as Shadows in Darkness and Liquid Development, no answers yet so far. Does anyone by any chance know specific people in outsourcing to contact about contract work or such? Also for those that have contracted before, what rates would you typically charge for say a prop, vehicle, character, etc.?

Would be great if you talked about your freelancing experiences as well!

Hmm, I dunno if I'd say better than Mass Effect 2 or not. DA definitely has better dialogue and tougher choices to make, but ME2 was such a huge improvement over ME2 that I was like wahhh. However, I felt more attached to the characters in ME2 than in DA, which made the last mission in ME2 all the more powerful. I almost didn't mind if some of them died in DA lol.

    *poking thread*

Just finished Dragon Age: Origins tonight...such a great epic game! Last battle was long and hard, but oh so satisfying. I think I nearly played 10-12 hours today lol....been a long while since I've done that. Anyways, onto Awakening!

Looking good, I'd maybe add a bit more of surface detail in the diffuse though to give it a bit more of variation/nuance. As it is now, just looks like plain colors.

I personally think DiCaprio has been awesome in all his roles of the last decade, he's been in so many fantastic films I pretty much associate him with quality now. Plus he's a superb actor.

This. I don't know why everyone hates him so much =(.
