I suck with real painting (and digital to). it always hard for me to find the good balance of colors and the practice is very long to achieve god work (like a lot of creative works...).

This is why I prefer black&white.

I'm certainly not amazing at drawing or painting, but one thing that quite a few artists that I know have stressed is to keep canvas-rotating to a minimum, as they claim you could one day be working on a piece of art that you cannot turn upside down very easily. Evidently it also improves overall line integrity. You have probably heard this many times, though.

Well, I have heard the opposite from my teachers (and I agree with them) because blocking your canvas is a bad idea for moving your hand only in the same way. I feel it's not natural to not moving the canvas, why block your hand when she can do nice stuff with rotations ? By the way, (most of the time) persons who work without moving their canvas are persons who are not comfortable with themselves and then block their movement and don't draw huge lines. I don't say that everybody must draw big lines, but always drawing only with little lines is the mark of beginner which are not sure of what they are doing.

I have quickly my idea on a drawing, so I can turn my canvas, work only on part of the drawing, go on an other part and go back, etc. (When I draw I'm very chaotic )

But If I can't move the canvas... it's me who move ! Sometimes I take strange positions.

By the way, I have already worked on large canvas (but not very huge format like street poster) and I have never feel to be blocked, I turn around, sometimes I work upside down, It's not a problem for me because I visualize very well the space.

Do you ever do 100% digital drawings, or much prefer scanning then touching up? How much faster is the video than real time?

(It took me one hour per video, accelerated to 1000% I guess.)

I do both, I'm better with traditional drawing, so I try to improve my skill on photoshop.

Since a few weeks I try to mix them and start with a classic drawing and work on it later with photoshop.

example, I have tried recently a technique for creating concept art from nothing : doing some quick drawing with layout marker, scanning them and inside photoshop trying to create an idea from chaos. When it's done, I come out the idea and draw it on the base sketch :

And an other quick concept made only with photoshop :

For anyone else who may suffer the same mistakes I did I just had to make sure they were set to tc_normaluncompressed, SRGB to false and Unpack Min to -1. I'm a little baffled as to how I managed to miss this info, even following a few tutorials on material creation. In general these tutorials often seem to skip what settings to use when importing textures.

Most of the time you doesn't need to set this in the texture, because if you choose correctly at the import the option "TC_Normalmap" for the compression settings, it will set these values by default.

So, I guess you have made a little mistake and chosen a wrong option while the import ?

(Or sometimes the UDK fuck your import and forgot to set the values, rare but happen)

Crysis 2 has a very nice balance of colors/saturation as did Crysis. More games need to look like it.

The color balance between crysis and crysis 2 are not at all the same. I sincerely prefer crysis.

I hope future games will not copy this crappy colors. Even the witcher 2 use the same color balance and contrast and it's very truculent/rough.

    I don't want a kitch game. :\

Do you think mirror's edge, hl2 ep2, portal 2 or even Dark Messiah will be better with these type of colors ?

And what is your actual lightmap size on you mesh (with the strange shadows) ?

Remenber that bsp surface don't work like mesh lightmap. On bsp the lesser the number is and better the shadow quality will be.

On a mesh, the lightmap size is the texture size of the lightmap, greater number equal finer shadows.

[img*]http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/9163/campfire2.jpgone of the first posts on the new Crymod - I love the SDK release and what the community starts doing with it!

Why people need to reproduce the colors of crysis 2 ?

I hate these colors, they are very strong, the contrast is very high and colors are saturated in Crysis 2, like on your screenshot with the red of the fire.
