  • Question on prototyping in UE3 with streamed levels

    • Serenius
    • March 5, 2011 at 9:59 PM

For those out there who use Unreal 3, when you are prototyping a new level that will require multiple streamed levels, which approach do you take?

    A) Prototype out the whole level and split up BSP, navigation points, and scripting into seperate levels once complete

    B) Prototype out all major BSP and break up into streamed levels prior to adding in scripting

    C) Build each area separately, adding streamed levels for new areas as you go

If you follow the first method, how do you avoid moving your in-game objects that are tied to Kismet events without breaking the connection?

Anyone have recommendations? I used to read Gamasutra for their expert blogs, but it seems to be a hit-or-miss affair nowadays in regards to quality or relevance.

There are a few good ones I follow, like Applied Game Design, The Game Prodigy, and Full Bright. Always on the lookout for more. I'd be in favor of even turning this thread into a compendium so others can find good online resources and articles.

    Anybody?

I would say the game is well-worth a buy. It breathes some fresh air into the stale FPS genre with the skill kills, over-the-top action, and absurdly hilarious dialog.

The original Dragon Age on PC was one of those games I still have a hard time figuring out exactly what made me like it so much.

    • [*:2feusddd]Combat was pretty good, but had quite a few flaws, and could get pretty repetitive once you figured out how to trivialize the encounters.
[*:2feusddd]Played more like WoW with pause functionality than anything else (played as a warrior on the main character).
[*:2feusddd]Graphics were decent, but would have been amazing if the game had been released 3-4 years earlier.
[*:2feusddd]Writing was really good, with some interesting albeit fairly cliche lore and story. It was really the characters that shined more than the world itself.
[*:2feusddd]The best moment in the game was halfway through the Circle of the Magi Tower. Nothing else came close.
[*:2feusddd]The Dragon fights, while sparse, were pretty amazing.

The Awakening expansion was pretty good, but lacked the character depth the original game had. I'm hoping that's not going to be Bioware's new MO since they did the same thing with shallower characters in ME2. Keeping the fingers crossed that DA2 will pick up the shortfalls of the first game and deliver yet another awesome western RPG.

Very different from what my friends have said. It's all about chaining together creative ways to kill your targets to rack up points for unlocks. Not just a simple headshot, but kneecap them, pull them in with the energy whip, kick them into a swarm of parasites, and set them on fire to rack up points kind of thing. Supposedly it's the most fun game ever when it comes to the simple act of killing bad guys.

Single player - co-op with a bit of endgame MMO influence, special abilitiesThis is a long shot, but I usually don't like MMO's for a variety of reasons. Anyhow, perhaps I'd like it if it was something like this:

Starts of as a single player (or make that co-op?) experience like a decent RPG has that gradually turns into an engame MMO in which the setting is modern/futuristic like with special abilities.

The beginning has a nice opening, you might not even have special abilities at first. Also, not superman stuff... Something like the tv series "Heroes" but more subtle like in the movie "Push".

Not "you've been spawned into an ugly open world, go kill some rats". After the single player kind of experience where you've been introduced to the game and after a decent finale, the game starts to open up into endgame MMO. You're basically skipping the first big shitty half MMO's have. The environment should be immersive, believable. A city, scientific facilities, whatever. First normal, then stuff goes wrong, environment changes...?

Of decent single player RPG quality. Not, here's a plane... We put some shit onto it. The majority of players is apparantly ok with that nowadays, but all new MMO's suffer from it, there's no immersion at all.

So yeah, basically... the beginning puts you into the game in a nice way, it's awsome. You don't want to grind to get amazing gear or whatever, no rush. You're just playing the game! Gradually when you know what's going on you're getting abilities and by the end of it, you're thrown into the MMO aspect of the game.

In the MMO engame part there's instances, battlefields and the storyline continues with big battles.

So the whole beginning of your everyday MMO is bypassed and has decent storytelling. No grind, no shitty beginner quests. Just a nice single player experience and you use the character you developed in the MMO engame and it's all about having fun with friends and teamplay. See it like a prolonged single player game.

I'm not even sure I would like it, very experimental... Perhaps I would, I honestly don't know. Or perhaps I just don't like MMO's as a whole?

In Killzone 2 it was pretty easy to pick out enemies due to their glowing red eyes. Though they would sometimes throw in a few environmental red lights close enough to ground level to fool you a few times, which was pretty irritating.

Never had any issues picking out enemies in Epic games aside from UT3.

also, just to make a triple post, i think used game sales as a whole hurt the industry more than piracy does. but then, used games mostly hurts console titles.

Just how big do you think the PC platform is for games compared to consoles?
