Worst thing about it from my point of view is the marginalizing of the Xbox Indie Games marketplace. Previously once you hit game marketplace we had our own row, just like XBLA, showing the top downloads in a row. This gave a direct window into the XBLIG market and what was available (ok, not always appealing games on show, but still!) which helped pull in potential customers. Now we are the second box along in speciality shops, with a rubbish picture of some avatars as our "box art". But hey I'm not privvy to the same marketing data that Microsoft is. Maybe they're right and this is truly the best place for XBLIG to flourish. We'll need to wait and see what it does to sales. There's a lot of conspiracy theories going on that we're being pushed to the side in order to avoid cannibalizing sales/exposure from XBLA titles though, as well as Microsoft trying to turn all us XNA developers onto their "sexy new market" on Windows Phone 7. As said, just need to wait and see how it pans out.

One thing I CANNOT see there being any positives to though is the removal of box art, game descriptions, screenshots, and (most importantly) the ability to RATE a game from your game library. Sure, they've made a nice new page for the games when you view them on the marketplace, but once you've downloaded it and access it from your game library you are presented with a bland, boring menu allowing you to play or delete, that's all. Who the hell is gonna rate games now you need to go in to the marketplace page in order to do it? It makes no sense whatsoever to remove this function from the place it was most likely to be used. It makes the box art of DLC titles feel much less important now too, which will discourage people from putting in as much effort.

It's not ALL doom and gloom though. There's a few really nice changes too. Once you actually get in to the XBLIG marketplace they've made great improvements, particularly in the genre browsing and increasing the length of the top rated/downloaded/new releases lists from 20 to 50.

Yeah, I've been hearing this from a lot of XNA developers lately. I kind of thought they were marginalizing XBLIG developers so I've begun porting all my XNA engine code to C++/openGL. It's not too bad but I have the benefit of a much more experienced coder than me handling the low level OS stuff like input and rendering. The benefit is now we can compile for pretty much anything that supports openGL, which is basically any platform EXCEPT xbox

Castle Crashers is awesome fun. Great game, also girlfriend approved.

Minecraft is just a giant demon time-sucking endeavor. I need to uninstall it already. I'm playing it during lectures.

I like all Biowares games before KOTOR. I really disliked KOTOR. Looking forward to trying Mass Effect eventually though.

Ugh, I'm getting that right now with a client for one of my freelance gigs. He doesn't really understand the process of building a model and keeps asking for changes upon changes upon changes. Sometimes those changes affect another part of the model, then I end up having to changed that, or he asks for a change, then changes his mind, etc. So frustrating. Never worked with someone as picky or difficult as that =0.

lol I had a boss like that for 2 years. My solution was to go to school for a programming degree. I had way to many clients like that.

I think severely curbing my freelance art work (and working at places with people above you like that) has had a very positive effect on my soul and sanity.

I feel like to a degree this can be self correcting, and the success of "indie" or small new devs is evidence that this is beginning to happen.

This is a little deja vu.Valve does something crazy

    Everyone hates it on announcement

    Time goes by

Everyone praises Valve for doing it on release

we'll see, valve has done plenty that I'm still unhappy about such as the SDK, TF2 becoming boring after a week or 2, CSS, SDK (because it's so bad it's worth mentioning twice).

I mean, I am/was a valve fanboy, but if you love something it's only right you point out when they are doing something unwise. If I didn't care about the direction Valve takes, then I wouldnt comment on the matter.

How's it low exactly? Isn't bringing more exposure to what is a relatively niche game/mod going to be good for it, rather than it eventually dying?

Because the 2 original creators wanted it to be public domain and essentially had no say in the matter.

Also I feel like naming the game DOTA2 was a low thing to do. I won't be buying it on principal.

Plus the DOTA creators have made LoL and fans have made HoN already.

Valve is no longer the company i used to love

Between this and their tool support, I'd have to say I'm getting there myself.

I never understood why people loved DOTA so much, it's just a bit rubbish!

    same deal for me...

    then I tried it

It's FAR deeper gameplay than it looks on the surface. I find myself using the same areas of my brain I would when playing chess and street fighter.
