Also I feel like naming the game DOTA2 was a low thing to do. I won't be buying it on principal.

Plus the DOTA creators have made LoL and fans have made HoN already.

Valve is no longer the company i used to love

Between this and their tool support, I'd have to say I'm getting there myself.

I was excited... until I heard they're copying EVERYTHING from the original. What the hell?! There's definitely bloat with 100 different heroes. I was hoping for something accessible and fun, instead it'll just stay the same old elitist circle jerk it ever was.

How's it low exactly? Isn't bringing more exposure to what is a relatively niche game/mod going to be good for it, rather than it eventually dying?

Because the 2 original creators wanted it to be public domain and essentially had no say in the matter.

I still don't understand why Valve is doing this. It would make a lot more sense to me if it was Blizzard but I'd find that hard to believe as well.

If Valve simply didn't name it DOTA2 there wouldnt be so much controversy....

While I have enjoyed an RTS style game in Source before (Zombie Master), the concept of DOTA and the community it attracts makes this sound even less appealing than vanilla counterstrike to me.

I find myself using the same areas of my brain I would when playing chess and street fighter.

How do you mash buttons in chess?

Lol, I do get the impression the DOTA community is very cliquey and is over-protective about the game. It's not like other games haven't gone from being free community-led games to commercial properties before (ie: Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, and Day of Defeat). In fact it's pretty much Valve's standard operating procedure now. It's not that big a deal — you don't have to buy or play it, nor is the original going anywhere.

Exactly... This is not the time to be making another DOTA spin-off, or worse... just the same game (if they really are just gonna copy the original!!).

I don't understand why they're going through with it, it's like saying... Guys, I know there's HoN and LoL out there, but we're gonna do it better, cos we're Valve...

The concept art looks pretty sweet though!

that's probably the main point of them, i know a lot and i mean A LOT of people who are disapointed in lol or HoN for that matter, it was supposed to be a better version of dota while it just is a different version.. maybe dota has a lot of characters but it just has a few maps (for example) if valve releases this game with a decent amount of maps and a variety of characters i recon this whil be a huge hit just because people look for more content, not the next best thing in this sub-genre just more of the same and they WILL be satifsfied with it.

This is a little deja vu.

    Valve does something crazy

    Everyone hates it on announcement

    Time goes by

Everyone praises Valve for doing it on release

we'll see, valve has done plenty that I'm still unhappy about such as the SDK, TF2 becoming boring after a week or 2, CSS, SDK (because it's so bad it's worth mentioning twice).

I mean, I am/was a valve fanboy, but if you love something it's only right you point out when they are doing something unwise. If I didn't care about the direction Valve takes, then I wouldnt comment on the matter.

hrm? usually valve suckers/fanboys gather to praise at the very first glance of a new product, then yelp like puppies when it's not released on time.

it's going to be interesting to see their take on dota (though i suppose it'll be very familiar), but i reckon they'll have a problem introducing the game to the masses. dota is the opposite of casual gaming; i guess it wouldn't be far out to say the complexity of the game was unrivaled by any other game. tutorials and training videos can only do so much, and we'll be likely to see a huge divide between players who can play the game, and players who are fodder. dota has been, and will always be a niche game; hunter s. thompson said it best: "when the going gets weird, the weird turns pro"

insert hp remark about "WHAT HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS" (reference to the goddamn alien(s) thread)

    1) Take RTS

    2) Remove 99% of game elements

    3) Become most impenetrably complex game ever

I always preferred the much older Aeon of Strife levels, that were always hacked. So halfway through the game player one would activate some item or type some key word and suddenly obliterate everything in sight and, while calling the opposite team noobs, try desperately to raze the base before everyone quit.

HoN would make me and my friends shout at eachother a lot during a game. A lot. A real lot.

If we bother with DoTA someone will inevitably get killed.
