Man I've lost work to corrupted brushes a few times now :(. I see it's still an open bug at epic. I wonder if it's because they are doing a revamp in the future. I see it's on the trello of upcoming features.

Day 1 of the UT mapping contest. Probably will do a revision today, maybe open it up a bit more.

It would have been pretty cool if they took the doom engine as the base and then maybe extended it rather than use unreal.

They just need to get Sandy Petersen and American McGee on board as level designers!

Holy shit that is the best use of parallaxing I've ever seen on a website. Looks cool!

As a game programmer this sucks :(

Also the cpu bump is negligible. The apu in general isn't really optimized for game programming. The ps3 while tougher to program for but theoretically had a better model of a very high clocked main processor and separate work units for parallelizable tasks.

Started the game up yesterday. Played for 7 hours.

Glad to see the performance is really decent on PS4 and generally a lot better than bloodborne. I was worried before playing because Bloodborne is pretty rough.

I might be mistaken but I was under the impression that any assets you buy from the marketplace you can use in commercial products in perpetuity. Is there not a standard marketplace license?

I need to find a way to get the kind of food poisoning that makes me too sick to go to work but not sick enough to stop me from playing DS3.

    It's a delicate balancing act.

I'm guessing it's still on the phyre engine. Sony at the very least does frequently update it.

Anyways I broke down and ordered by copy as well as scheduled some vacation days to play it

Yeah I've been hearing the angle about psvr potentially being the winner due to practicality a lot too. Even more interesting is Sony reports they are making a profit on every unit.

I'm thinking that I will wait a couple months and see how the people like them before making a choice on which one to get.

Any word on how each of them work for people who wear glasses? I remember the rift that I tried being at the very least possible.

Video of the LevelViz unreal plugin I'm working on for setting up interactive viewings of environments. Might be cool for environment artists to make a standalone interactive portfolio. Has tablet/touch friendly user interface.

There is a long devlog about it here

The video shows the process of setting up the LevelViz environment and then viewing the level.

13 hours ago, Castle said: It took me awhile to learn the systems. I have done quite a few side projects for sure. But Blueprints really do make doing stuff like this easier on many fronts. I will be releasing the dev version with the playable version soonish.

The inventory system has forced me to work on a ton of different systems. That is why its taking so long to get this next version out. It turns out that building an inventory system very quickly spider webs the design of a game!

    Is it entirely in blueprints?

Been a long time since I've been able to sit down and do some environment work. I'm starting a new project to make a plugin for unreal that can be used to show environment art portfolios or vizualization. I will make a thread about the project when there's more to show.

Anyways this is a perfect excuse for me to make a scene I can use to test the project. Here's what I got so far.

So I'm coming close to the end of my 3 weeks vacation and I dont want it to end! I had to spend about half of it dealing with general bullshit I ignored while under the gun at work like taxes and my american citizenship process. The other half of the vacation was divine though. Played video games at my leisure, did a ton of experimenting and work in the Unreal engine, got lots of exercise and did a lot of cooking! Even when I was programming on the Unreal engine it never felt like work. Stuff on there is complicated but always logical. It's a pleasure.

Problem is I don't want this to end. I would love to find some way to find a better life balance. The Unreal engine seems to be REALLY taking off from the perspective of companies who can afford to pay though. I think I'm going to double down on understanding the engine and maybe try to see if I can find some kind of niche in consulting or tooling.

Although there's a part of me that wants to go back to my early twenties and just get the cheapest place I can get so I can have maximum time to myself to do whatever.

  • What are you playing now?

I'm about 3.5 hours into MGSV and wow I'm loving the game. I'm also not a person who's into MGS games. I've only beaten 4 (didn't love it either) and given up on 1 like 5 times (got bored around level 3).

Anyways the big difference with this game is there seems to be way more attention paid to the game design itself. There's a lot of wow moments in regards to how everything functions and what I can do. Really really cool.

Also the cutscenes are a lot more interesting than the previous games so far.
