Yup, and it still sold like only 1/10th the copies on the xbox. But what I do not understand is why console gamers don't demand more, I mean a lot of things that make online suck on console are not inherent to the platforms, like dedicated server support. When you sell 10+ million copies on a platform, I would expect you want to please your customers that much more, and I would expect the customers to look at the PC and ask why they can't have that.

It sold 14 million worldwide to date on all three platforms combined. From what I've heard it's something like 2 mil for PC. Even if that's a sixth the console sales, two million is still a fucking huge, gigantic, enormous number of sales. That more than what all versions of STALKER have sold to date. For AAA games most consider the break line for huge hit at 1 million even.

It seems like they really don't care about getting those 2 million back again, though. Price hike + no dedicated servers + negative perception among PC customers = what's left at all as motivation to actually pay for the game? Even stuff that should be great for garnering goodwill, like the integrated Steam features (Valve Anti-cheat replacing Punkbuster, Steam friends list/community integration for that iw.net platform) has gotten completely ignored over the furor about the bad stuff.

My last computer died while I was playing Doom 3, so I'm afraid of reinstalling it for no good reason (Same thing happened last time a computer died on me, I had just installed Firefox less then a day before it called it quits and I was paranoid about reinstalling it on the new one for a couple weeks. My friend eventually told me he was gonna stop talking to me unless I upgraded from IE ).

This makes it really tempting to play it though. I've still got Final Doom on my computer and play it every once in a while.

So is somebody gonna explain how unsupported resolutions can set monitors on fire or what?

Activision also pulled the Quake 4 1.1 patch because if you changed display resolutions over and over again really super quickly between resolutions that weren't supported, it apparently caught really old CRT monitors on fire. :\

I'm very confused, but also laughing very hard.

I dont really see how "realistic combat wear" can have any meaning in a science fiction world where you kill aliens that fight with fangs and teeth.I for one would NOT combat those aliens wearing a polyester shirt, bullet proof west with rayban sunglasses and kaki pants. I'd wear all the scraps of metal I could find.

I agree, I imagine that soft muscle wrap looking armor to behave like kevlar, and be great against direct impacts but not stand up to a slash of a knife (or an arrow, etc) very well comparatively at all. Big thick metal, though, would be the opposite- protection against slashes and punctures, but hard impacts would resonate to the wearer through the metal, probably knocking the wind out of him at least.

PS a good compromise between these armor arguments is Isaac's armor from Dead Space

What? People turtle with health regen all the time, to give their health a chance to kick back in safety from behind cover.

Health packs are hardly a better option, the perfect health system future is the Max Payne system of hotkey'd health items you carry with you. Or, alternatively, MGS3's or Far Cry 2's, I'm so over dudes not pulling out bullets when they've been shot.

What, even if it dramatically makes the gameplay better? I'm as big a Battlefield fan as it gets, but I'm open to things like that if they make it more fun.

I don't see how health regen makes gameplay better in multiplayer, I've always seen it as a tool to keep the top players on a streak in play longer since he can't be wittled down by weaker players who fail to kill him. Basically same effect in single player, I recently played through a Call of Duty game and felt 100% invincible unless 3 or more dudes were all shooting me at once, and even then they weren't so good that I couldn't kill all three before they killed me. And then after absorbing all of those bullets I'm fine again before the next encounter!

I really don't like feeling like a superhero in a ripped from the headlines this-is-like-the-real-world military shooter.

You can't give an indie game an easier time just cause it's indie when they're charging the exact same amount of money as a mainstream title. The review seems pretty straight-forward to me.

If you want more footage though, you could try this:

    http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-dar ... s/17-1370/

Features the awful AI, invisible walls, poorly laid out levels, and dudes standing in fire.

Rebates are pretty much as close as possible to scams as you can get without actually being an overt scam. They're basically the worst "deal" ever and nobody should ever count on them.

Aw man, yeah, I enjoy all the hidey holes and off the path areas that appear to be available. That DODS aspect of having as many parts of the map enterable and explorable as possible really adds to multiplayer for me cause it makes things less predictable and obvious, nice to see another game look like it's taking that mindset.

I still haven't played Bioshock, my computer hasn't been good enough to run it. I've owned a copy on Steam since last christmas, though. First thing I'll install when I get a new PC (after firefox and deus ex and my chat programs and antivirus and steam)

That looked really cool. I like the puzzles with time reconstruction.

Looks less like puzzles and more like "use shiny objects to continue". What I saw in those videos never went more complex then flipping obvious switches, except maybe the combat uses and that's still pretty meh.

Watched it today, that was a damn good movie. Never saw aliens made to seem so real and personable before. Extra impressive since they were CG, too.

Anyone on the edge not sure if it's worth watching- at one point a pig is gravity gunned into a soldier, killing him.

Depending on how much (or little) they spent on making the game 106k copies in one week could actually be good. Wolfenstein doesn't strike me as an AAA title, it sure didn't get AAA advertising.

That's far from being one of the reasons why It's selling so badly, gamers don't care if the employees are layed off.

I said it didn't help, I wasn't impying it was a big issue. It's not that "Oh, we're so offended by their actions of downsizing we won't support them", it's that the small percentage of us gamers who follow the news heard about the layoffs and closings and took it as a sign of a lack of confidence on activision's part in the game.
