  • Iranian Game Developer Prepares to Launch Title

Yeah, same reaction as Frie: Kinda disappointing that the end result of such an inspirational dev tale is a God of War clone. Also, kinda surprised this doesn't in some way get them in trouble for the violence or something, but in fact got them a grant from "Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance". One thing's for sure, they probably didn't copy the more raunchy elements of GOW

Also, I laughed at the 360 sound they played at the end of the trailer, on the "Coming Soon" screen.

How come nobody told me TF2 was all different? I haven't played in two months, launch it today, and there's a tutorial now, and the main menu's completely different, and it defaulted me to 480p as my resolution. Since when does that even exist on PC?

I can't think of a single artistic game that doesn't come preloaded with baggage that requires game knowledge and experience to work with. You need a History of Gaming under your belt, really. The same thing actually applies to movies- my favorite novel is One Hundred Years of Solitude, which covers a small South American town from its early 19th century inception to the mid 20th or so, and somewhere in the middle, as the town starts towards integration with larger society and modernization, it gets a movie theater. None of the characters like it, because they can't get over seeing someone die in one movie only to come back in another- the repeat performances of Hollywood actors turned them off completely to the medium.

Ebert really doesn't stand much of a chance of ever "getting" videogames. It really is something you had to have been there at the right personal time for. Same as movies. Same as books. You need education to properly appreciate these forms of entertainment.

Edit: Annoying. At the end of that article is a link to another article about Clive Barker, and I clicked it wanting to see what possible connection Clive Barker had to art and videogames (Personally: Undying far outmatches Midnight Meat Train as far as artistic merit goes, though the part when a guy's hit in the back of his head with a hammer and his eyeball pops out and hits the person standing in front of him was brilliant) but the link's dead.

  • What have you purchased recently?

As the dust settles on the Steam fourth of july sale:

Borderlands + all three DLC $20

    Red Faction: Guerrilla $5

    Puzzle Kingdoms $1

    Grand Theft Auto 4 $5

    Torchlight $5

Would've been tons more if I didn't already own some of the really cheap stuff like the Introversion pack, The Void, Space Rangers 2 Reboot, Thief 3, Killing Floor, L4D2... Insane sale.

I'd be totally ok with id going back to making straight forward action shooters. Show those young whippersnappers that Halo and Gears aren't the only games in town to emulate. I'd fucking love a new old Doom renaissance in game design. Gimme lightning fast character movement, ten guns at once, hundreds of things to kill per minute over hiding behind cover and waiting for your shields to recharge any day of the week.

But Rage is ok, too Day one purchase for me from what I've seen so far.

If you have the slightest interest in games, which I assume people on Mapcore to have, then why on earth would you ever buy a machine with onboard gfx? Makes no sense to me.

My graphics card hasn't arrived yet- a friend is upgrading to a 5770 and sending me his old 8800GT.

i think it's safe to say it is much more niche than it used to be. this is because the consoles (and their control systems) casualized gaming, leaving the PC as a more unstable or unsuitable platform. the only games that are thriving on the PC are those that would be impossible to play on consoles.

I wouldn't say that either, L4D is thriving on both platforms it's on.

I still like the PC because it's my favourite platform for RTS and FPS games (though the inevitable spread of Wiimote-esque control systems severely challenges that), but as a gaming platform it's shit. Many games are rigged with insane DRM, ports are sloppy at best, the cost-to-performance value can't even touch that of the PS3/360, and there's practically nothing in the way of compelling exclusives. When the odd game does things right (TF2, BC2) it's fantastic, but that's like saying swimming in a sea of smashed milk bottles is good because you occasionally find a drop of milk.

As a former PC zealot it pains me to say that PC gaming is shit, but I honestly think anyone who says otherwise has to be delusional.

I'm playing The Void right now on a machine I built for $210. Eh. I've been a playstation devotee most of my gaming career, but ever since I really got into PC gaming around 2005 or so (because my PS2 died and holy shit PS3 is six hundred dollars!) it's been my native platform. Games are cheaper, and customizable, I like the convenience of having my home entertainment consolidated for the most part on one doted on, self-built device. Really, the hardware itself is more the focus of the hobby for me than the games. It's like the difference between buying a car and restoring one yourself. The one you restored might not drive as well if you aren't the best mechanic in the world ( ) but there's a special pleasure that's added to the experience when you're experiencing it via the product of your own hands instead of someone else's (some robot hands lol).

":2xaqbmto]Yes, PS3 does support mouse and keyboard. But most games don't support them. (Mainly because of pace and difficulty, imagine playing KZ2 online with a mouse, you'd own everyone)

As far as I know no games support KBM outside of generic XMB functions like text entry, except for the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3. I was browsing the used games at Gamestop the other day and saw it there for $8, and was tempted purely for the novelty of playing a console game with mouse and keyboard, but decided against it in the end.

Yeah man, until this generation I was totally a PC guy but it's now impossible to defend the PC as a quality gaming platform. Not that I don't still enjoy games like BC2 on the PC (probably the only game since TF2 I'd say is worth bothering with), but as a gamer I couldn't imagine not having consoles and missing out on the amazing games that've come out this generation.

I dunno how you go from "Can't defend the PC as a quality gaming platform" to "Can't miss out on consoles", there seems to be some space in there. Personally, while I never bother to "Defend" a particular platform, I justify my devotion to the PC with quality exclusive experiences like The Void, Space Rangers 2, and being able to hit shift + tab and look at porn without even having to quit TF2.

I played RE5's demo on my PS3 and hated it, and then played it again in local coop with my brother and loved it. The second part where you fight the chainsaw guy especially, it was a good time trying to plan a strategy on the fly to fight the dude while avoid getting our heads chopped off. It's one of those few unfortunate things that PC never really gets. Thankfully however in a vast majority of cases most console games aren't getting it anymore either,

Also Cold Fear was a better game than RE4. Basically the same type of shooter except a) No escorting, b) AWESOME STORM GRAPHICS, c) Good PC port. I think it may have been the first game I played with per-pixel character lighting. I remember being very impressed by how the main character was lit.

    Yo everyone, buy this game:

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/46330/

It's the best open world space semi-roguelike semi-turn based top-down action shooter (with RTS and text adventure elements) ever, and it's only $5.

And yes, don't play Crysis1 demo, that build is so bad. Even the release build of Crysis1 is a bit meh, patch 1.2 fixes a lot of performance issues with the game.

Damn, really? I thought for sure I heard Dead Space was UE3. Wikipedia agrees with you, too. I guess everyone should be using the Godfather engine then.

I think I'll hold out buying Crysis until I have a dedicated GPU. I've got my eye on a $60 Palit GT240 (cheap ass pc gaming fo life).

Well. I think we cleared that up.

The surprise wasn't the terrible fps, it was when it was playable. I've given up on replaying Bioshock because the performance is low enough to annoy me during gameplay on this machine (oddly enough though Dead Space in the same engine runs way better and looks amazing).

I built a new cheapo machine with onboard graphics this week. Tried out the Crysis demo tonight.

    1) Playable FPS during the intro when the camera's outside the plane/overlooking the island.

    2) Terrible inside with the dudes.

    3) Good again outside, including going up the beach.

    4) Terrible again when I go inland into the brush to find Aztec. I quit at this point.

Still, significantly better than I was expecting. The pop-up ui to mod your guns was really super fucking neat. Hope that comes back in Crysis 2 I guess!

I recently started replaying Ape Escape, on the same exact copy I bought brand new on my ninth birthday. Even older than Deus Ex. I think because I grew up with the PS1 I'm totally immune to "Ugh this game's graphics are so OLD I literally CANNOT PLAY IT" syndrome, shitty early 3d graphics just make me feel nostalgic
