I saw a weird skull/horn thing on my compass, and decided to go check it out. It turned out to be a Giant camp, and the giants did not at all appreciate me walking up, and without warning went hostile. One hit me. Once.

The laughs were worth it

Jetsetlemming: Did it bother you in Battlefield 3's campaign when
? Just curious.
I got killed three times in a row trying to avoid doing exactly that. It helps that at least they're shooting at you, instead of having their back turned, completely innocent and oblivious. A bad fight instead of an outright murder.
Related: I really dug in BF3, around 3/4 through the game, when
Quoteyour NPC teammate discovers that they're fighting Russians and flips the fuck out at the consequences and implications of that.

Going back to Max Payne 2 again: There has been no greater boss fight than fighting Vlad at the end of that game. No greater final level mechanic tying into the boss, no greater actual fight, and no greater conclusion. Any game doing less is doing a disservice.

Fuck cover in shooters when it leads to Whack-A-Mole firefights.
Fuck quickly regenerating health, Halo/Gears/COD style. Slowly regenerating health, like Deus Ex or Crysis, is ok.
Fuck near-sepia looking desaturation filters (thankfully these seem to be mostly out the door).
Fuck QTEs in general, but ESPECIALLY fuck having an end boss fight that's just "Hammer X to make a cutscene go!". Every Call of Duty since MW, Battlefield 3, etc. Is it really too much to ask to actually let me SHOOT the bad guy, in this game about SHOOTING BAD GUYS? But no, I have to do something retarded looking and badical like pulling a knife out of my chest by hammering on a button, then pushing a different one to trigger a cutscene of throwing it at the bad guy's face.
Catchall: Fuck me-too game design that rips off a random element of a popular game without thinking about it, why it was in the original game, or how it works in a fun manner. My personal favorite example of this is Bioshock 2's multiplayer, which took the COD level up system, and might as well have just copy pasted IW's design document. You start with a pistol and electric plasmid, and can unlock grenade launchers and all sorts of other super high end shit from SP by grinding levels. Starting that game a couple months after it came out, at level 1, when other people had gotten to level, was an experience not unlike going into Counterstrike fresh and joining a VAC-less server with every other player aimbotting. Just because a game that sold well did something, does not mean your game is going to automatically sell well if you do that thing. Your game won't automatically sell poorly for not doing that thing.

You may not find RE4 scary, but they specifically chose their camera style to make the player feel claustrophobic. It makes the crowd scenes seem bigger and scarier. Speaking of which: None of the things I really truly loved about RE4 every get ripped off, like the crowd stuff, or the environment design, or the enemy interactivity for stuff like shooting the guy with the dynamite to blow up the guys around him, or knocking down ladders. Occasionally you can shoot a guy throwing a grenade and he'll drop it, like in Uncharted 3, but if anything THAT should be a fucking standard, and it isn't, and yet that stupid camera is.

I'm pretty sure if I were to participate in such a thread I would end up posting a gigantic rant about how Resident Evil 4 was an OK game, not the greatest gift to mankind to ever be created, and you can stop aping its elements already. Especially since most of the elements aped from it were chosen specifically to BE bad, like the camera angle. They intentionally restrict your view angle and have Leon take up too much of the screen to make the game scarier. If you're game's not supposed to be scary and claustrophobic on purpose, guess fucking what, DON'T USE THAT CAMERA.
I wish I lived in an alternate universe where Max Payne 2 occupied the same slot in game design influences that RE4 does now.

Somebody should make a "Rant about common modern game design elements" thread

The Stanley Parable had no fun gameplay but I really super enjoyed that. It was just walking down corridors and listening to a British guy talk.

I never actually ever got into Rainbow Six, the tactical screen was too confusing for me back when those games actually had a tactical screen and weren't just linear FPS's. Talking about it reminds me though, I have the GRIN made Ghost Recon game in my Steam list, and I've had it since at LEAST two christmas sales ago, and I've never actually played it. I should.

Pretty sure they just shot the cop in the leg
Cops don't shoot using their legs. Shooting a cop in the leg doesn't really stop them from shooting the guy with the bomb, it probably actually makes it more likely because it probably doesn't help identifying that hey that guy's got a dead man switch, don't shoot him, when you're in extreme pain.
Just the line of thinking there behind that scene gets more ridiculous and insane the more I ponder on it. "Those mongoloid inbred downs syndromes in uniform down there surely can't recognize that one of the people on the bridge isn't a terrorist and they shouldn't be shot, even though there's a bunch of innocent people on the bridge running away from the terrorists that they've so far managed not to shoot, also fuck I'm not going to translate this information to fucking APE GRUNTS, who do you think I am, some kind of responsible professionally trained counter-terrorism expert? I'm not going to interact with those FUCKIN RETARDS of the NYPD below us! Just murder them so they don't shoot the guy with some C4 that will somehow explode a 150m radius because it's magic C4!" *shoots cop in leg* *he goes down instantly and dies*

Well don't leave us hanging, explain yourself!
The cop shooting and the unintended (but they probably should've thought about it before releasing the video) implication of OWS terrorists. Is it really that hard to see anything wrong with that video? The cop shooting especially was just ridiculous.

Not only was I not interested in playing what I saw in the video, I was offended by it.

That Sounds of Skyrim video kinda throws out as an aside that the guy who was lead on the Dark brotherhood quest in Oblivion, and a veteran of working on the Thief games, is a Senior Designer for Skyrim. I'm excited for this game again

Tricky, as I know bugger all about Dota. I've signed up for this on Valve fanboy status alone
.Same. I was kinda annoyed that they didn't actually just include a "I've never played a DOTA style game before" option. I watched the DOTA 2 debut tournament videos and understood absolutely nothing about them, except I guess the Diablo-esque elements of running around with a dude controlled by the mouse and hitting things. The commenters were throwing out weird unknown terms about strategy and game state left and right.

Battlelog is for the most part surprisingly sweet. The only thing I'm not so keen on is the fact that my web browser has to be sat running while playing, otherwise the game closes. It's not uncommon for me to have millions of tabs open for projects I'm in the middle of, etc and unfortunately these tabs each use up a considerable amount of RAM and sometimes even CPU depending on what's in them (Flash is a particular concern). While I can control this myself to a degree by closing any unnecessary tabs when playing, it's an extra inconvenience I could do without. Also there must be a lot of people out their fucking up their performance by leaving crap open in tabs without realising the impact it can have.
As such I still think it would have been nice to have the option to launch the game traditionally and access all the Battlelog stuff via an in-game web browser that isn't connected to your regular-use browser, thus avoiding all of the above. Just like with Steam it could still be possible to access everything via a regular web browser.
I agree with this, Origin should implement webkit or some other integrated browser so your "main" one you use outside the game can be closed while playing.

Welp, to anyone with an ATI card and got shit perfomance ... run Driver Sweeper, and reinstall latest Catalyst. Finally my game runs as it's supposed to to.
For some reason no AMD installer works for me anymore, they silently crash after I click "Install". I can update the drivers manually by pointing windows at the extracted AMD folder, but Catalyst and the other components are pretty much just stuck at 11.8 on my computer.

Played a rented console copy for SP, because I can't afford $60 for a videogame. It did Call of Duty remarkably well, possibly even better than Treyarch does Call of Duty. But some of the stuff in there was very eh. The story justification for the missions was clearly phoning it in, and yet, despite the loose structure of the story, too many of the plot missions were set in samey areas ANYWAY. There is not the slightest thing of interest to me about fighting in the middle east. I went into this thinking that it'd be a globetrotting game about a terrorist conspiracy, and while it kinda was on the surface the rest of the planet was sorely short shifted for generic iraq war levels. The ones set in "Northern Iran" were pretty sweet though.
Actually, a lot of the levels were pretty sweet, despite the setting. The ones at the end in Northern Iran, the jet gunner (the absolute worst excuse for a level, plot-wise was this one. "Hey, did you know [x]? She's a pilot and had no direct or indirect contact with you whatsoever, and has no bearing on the overall plot, she just happened to be killing dudes at the same time you were killing dudes." "Nope." "Well let me tell you a random story of her killing dudes for you anyway."), and Paris were fun.
There were also some super not fun ones thrown in there, though, for example the "Operation Guillotine" mission immediately after the jet gunner was incredibly bullshit. Could barely see enemies sniping at me from behind rocks and shit in the middle of the night, while my horde of friendly NPCs shoot into the air and stand around and occasionally shove me out of cover, doing their best to contribute nothing.
Also throughout the game the visual effects whenever lights were shined in your face were incredibly annoying and frustrating. Way too over the top, dust off your fucking sunglasses, player characters!!!
Also lens flare lol. Nothing makes me feel like I'm an actual dude and not a camera taped to a gun like seeing lens flare randomly!
So basically the game gets from me one of those wishy washy copout "for the fans" review from me. If you just can't get enough shooting brown dudes, and can't stand that MW3 is about Russians now, Battlefield 3 is just the sort of outlet for your sociopathy you were looking for!

GTA 4 sucked imo because there wasn't much to do compared to SA and there wasnt much things to spent money on. So the whole game felt empty and dead after the "wow"-effect about the realistic looking world weared off. Also the missions were repetitive and boring to me.
This, except for the part about the "realistic looking world", I could never, no matter how long I played GTA4, get over the super jaggy shadows. It's a shame, because the core game is really good, but they didn't really put enough fun activities into it like San Andreas did. Also I didn't really jive with the radio options like I did for the past GTAs. I always seemed to be listening to generic techno pop in GTA4 and the episodes, nothing really memorable or groovy.
