Half-life 1's physical design really helped Afraid of Monsters be better, and more scary. You move faster than in HL2 and modern games, and it feels expected and natural, and that speed really amps up the fear. Plus HL1's low bar of entry for new art made it possible for one super fucked up 15 year old swede (with programming help from Minuit who I know nothing about) make the best mod ever. ![]()

Fuck yes. Afraid of Monsters is the best mod for a videogame I've ever played, and I can't wait to play this today. I'm actually considering cancelling plans I had with my gf for it, which is a first for me. That's how much I want to play this.

It wasn't that big a jump on the 360. Is it because they use a different resolution or more the quality of the graphics?
A lot of time, especially early in the game, the lighting between the prerendered scenes and the ingame graphics is very different. Entirely changed color schemes etc. The prerendered scenes tend to have a warmer/more desaturated look to them. The prerendered scenes also are a lot fuzzier, lots of depth of field and dramatic camera focuses and zooming that isn't apparent ingame.
I beat Alan Wake tonight, and by the end of it I was pretty much hating it. They play Major Tom over the end credits though, which greatly warmed my heart, enough to try the first piece of DLC, "The Signal"... which within 15 minutes once again had me hating Alan Wake.

It's when you're on the town streets with the sheriff in chapter five. I don't think lowering the difficulty will help, unless it makes checkpoints more sensible or puts invisible walls along death drop ledges.
Overall Alan Wake is becoming a less good game as it goes along. There's less attention being made to balance, and to clear pathways, and to pacing. It's still a good game, but it's not great. That Remedy storytelling hook is keeping me playing, but I'm getting strong feelings of sadness from it because it's worse in a lot of ways, gameplay-wise, compared to Max Payne 2.

I was planning on beating Alan Wake today but shortly after you meet up with the cop and are on the street of Bright Springs I died twice after multiple combat scenarios in a row, with the game putting me all the way back to opening a gate. One of those times was the game tricking me into walking off a dock and into water, instakilling me (there's a stash hint arrow pointing towards a space between a fence and building, and the fence and building keep going but the dark wooden floor stops and gives way to dark water, and Alan's movements have momentum so I didn't see I shouldn't go there until it was too late). On both deaths I was over ten minutes of play since opening that gate. After the second death I closed the game on the spot, and I'm not sure when I'll go back to it.

I played up to Episode 4 in one session two nights ago, I mean to finish it today. Alan Wake's a pretty damn good game. It's got some niggling issues (every time I die/see a cutscene/etc it resets my camera to having alan on the right side of the screen when I prefer him on the left, having a high FOV makes the shooting really hard since you're at a misaligned camera angle shooting along a misaligned firing path following the beam of the flashlight, when enemies get all up in your shit there's really no way out except to browse through your inventory and use a flare, no sort of panic button, and enemy attacks stun you from using the flare/dodging other incoming attacks/etc), but overall I'm loving the atmosphere and the storytelling. The game's storytelling, not Alan's. He's a shitty writer. Dude leans on adjectives and adverbs and terrible metaphors like a crutch.

Started replaying Silent Hill Shattered Memories last night, playing it kinda coop with the gf. Coloring the house after the first run moment was fun.

I want all of it and I want it now, especially the special magic combinations, vampire stuff, graphical stuff, and CRAB BATTLE. It's incredible that somehow in a single week of internal development of people just doing what they want, the developers managed to create more additions to the base game than some games get in numbered sequel releases.

In the shot of Caveman Dad stomping on Expressionless Baddie's head, the shelf on the right is in great detail, pointlessly. Their texturing is seriously odd in these screens. The ground in the last shot is imo worse than the vehicles.

I'm like 99% sure everyone on mapcore could draw the layouts to De_Dust / De_Dust 2 / and Cs_Office ... Blindfolded

dust2 and office, yes, but not dust. A few of the most common gg_ maps, however...

It does seem extreme, but I bet you I could put together something just as detailed for something like Metal Gear Solid. Amazing how it can imprint on your mind.

You made me start thinking about this, and I think I could get at least to where you fight the tank driven by vulcan raven. Weird, it's seriously been over a decade since I played MGS, and I don't think I ever replayed it. But I can still fully picture a lot of that game's levels in my mind anyway. Bunch of fragments past that, too, like the room with the molten metal you had to go to to heat up a keycard, and the room with a metal gear rex in it that you could run around/climb on.
MGS2 as well. Not so much the ship from the intro (though I can perfectly picture the outside deck of it), but Big Shell, the area you play as Raiden in.
Also I have every urban environment from Shadowrun on the genesis, in every little detail, committed to memory, but that's a game I have replayed like twenty times since I first got it as a kid.

Man, it really bugs me that they're doing this skeevy linksharing setup to get in the beta. I don't want to trick my friends into clicking a particular link!

You guys made me look back at that third shot, and I noticed the super weird looking forehead wrinkles Caveman Mainguy has going on, and I can't unsee them. It's really weird, like he's got green streaks across his forehead.

Dude looks like a caveman, especially in that first shot. Also those textures make me sad, Naughty Dog should make PC games.

Dawn of the Dead (original)
The greatest zombie movie of all time and the best recent zombie movie? Zombie movies in general are a small section of the market but I can't really agree with calling the very best examples of a subgenre "underrated" when they're compared to their peers. Zombie movies in general are an underrated genre compared to what typically makes a blockbuster. Now, you want to talk about underrated zombie movies, how about Carriers? It doesn't even have zombies, just plays on the common tropes while saving the budget of makeup and extras by just having the incurable, highly deadly degenerative disease actually kill people, while keeping the focus on human relations at the end of days, and it's fantastic for it.

Yeah, Isaac was made by two guys, only one of which was on Team Meat, Edward McMillian, the art guy.
e: But separately from the direct development of the game they also got the same musician to score Isaac as well, so three guys I guess.

Going back to Dead Island. It's weird, there are a lot of mediocre games I've played over semi-recent game history, like Borderlands and Kane and Lynch 2, that were worthless SP and saved by coop. Dead Island is the other way around, the way it's organized for multiplayer is terrible, with difficult communication with other players, and less fluid mechanics in general for coordinating what you're going to do and how you're going to do it, unlike Borderlands, despite basically cloning it. In SP the game was okay-ish, not great, until this morning when I happened upon the "Heavy Duty Mod", and built it- a metal rod with electrified fins going down it. Gives a bonus to crit, and, on crit, does 5x weapon damage as electricity, which turns the enemy you whacked with it into an electrified projectile flying away from you at mach speed, typically crashing into the first wall and instagibbing on contact. It's fucking AWESOME. Instantly redeemed the game for me, I've started building my character to focus on getting crits now.

Heh I hae to admit I'm surprised that it happened. There's some publishing company that's been doing this for smaller games. Terraria is getting a similar release. IIRC BOI is written in c++. I wouldnt be surprised if they reused parts of the Meatboy tech since they probably had it lying around anyways.
Nope, Isaac's flash, which is how they managed to make it in two months (or was it four? Maybe that was Terraria). Isaac being flash is also why the controller options is "Google Joy2Key", to the great bemusement of people who expect their $1.25 indie roguelikes to meet their every demand with a curtsy (shitheads, in other words).
So, how the hell are they filling out not one but TWO discs for this release? What, HD video of random people playing the game? The game itself is only 216MB.
