My own little idea: make something that doesn't look like it came from the engine it uses. On GoW, don't make some muddied blue-grey-brown mansion. On Source, don't make a wrecked city lit in fluorescent yellow and teal. On FarCry, don't make a jungle island... etc. For that (optional) extra paradoxical kick (and to level the playing field) - stock assets only. Bonus points if it looks like an actual map and not just some diorama you threw together.

I love this idea. It's pretty easy to do in Source, though, I think, since there's also wilderness beaches and cliffs, sci-fi alien buildings, horror villages filled with zombies, mines, etc.

Judging by the hint of light blue at the bottom of the visible sky in the last screen that's sky_borealis01.

but that's the ubisoft way... there are still a lot of companies who have the jack-of-all-trades type level designer who also models and textures his own level (ontop of designing it) ....but this is getting more rare I think...industry seems to swing more towards specialized positions these days.

Personally, I'm thankful for that. Due to monetary restraints I've yet to even get a shot to attempt to learn how to model or texture. My next computer will actually be good enough to run 3dsmax or Maya though, and I'm looking to get a digital camera so I can try to make simple textures (I certainly can't draw them by hand Taking pictures of walls and things and cleaning them up and adding filters seems like a good way to make a texture, though).

The sheer number of times I've wishes for a specific texture or decoration and not had it because I have to rely on the standard game content and what others make and release for free is very depressing.

Edit: At least I know simplistic coding. I'm up to par for stuff like UnrealScript and Source's I/O system.

    You could just be anonymous.

Also that whole "act respectable in public to put on a good face" thing doesn't really seem to be a care for a lot of more well known people in the industry.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure such things do exist, though I don't know about specifically for level designers. I've heard of "secret industry mailing lists" and "forums" mentioned on the sly before.

God those guys talking about it are annoying.

This. Why the hell did they pad out the video with footage of guys standing in an alley somewhere talking about it?

The footage looked awesome, though, especially what I assume was a blowout at the end.

":qeqyfx1b]Yes, Taylor, partially, I agree...It's like, for instance, someone decided to make Max Payne 3 an FPS, it wouldn't be the same, and the fans would get really mad.

But well, Bethesda owns the IP, and they can do whatever they want to do with it, but given the very good reputation this company has, I think the fallout franchise is in good hands.

Max Payne 2 was amazing with a mod I found that made it first person. It made a number of scenes feel and play totally different, like when you have to hide in the cubicles from the mobsters when you're in the hospital without a gun.

Being afraid of or getting pissy over change is a loser's game. They could release the next Deus Ex game as a real time strategy, and if it was good I'd still play it.

No specific engine. I'd love to see people compete with maps made across the board of the most popular mapping engines. I, personally, can make some impressive as fuck maps in Unreal 1, which isn't even in the poll!

For me, that is exactly what I want to see! Oblivion is the best RPG I've played!

Why don't you just wait for a new oblivion game?As for not being able to kill children or NPCs is weak, really fucking weak.

And the dialogue, I doubt that they'll have better dialogs, they might have more. More isn't always good.

No travelmap? No random encounters while fast traveling?

You can kill non-children non-essential NPCs. They said they worked to keep the essential list as small as possible.

The overhead map will work the same way as Oblivion's, you can choose to walk/possibly ride everywhere instead of fast traveling so you will run into random encounters in real time.

Oh. Hm. I most certainly did.

You guys need a separate site or something.

So has Clear Sky multiplayer info just not been released/made public then? Or is it all hidden away in those Russian-language articles? ¬_¬

Using the faction system and going to war against a pal online backing a different faction sounds like it would be pretty goddamn sweet.

I'm thinking of something like Freedom Fighter's multiplayer, which was sadly tarred by being console only and stupidly small mirrored maps which allowed for no real strategy or tactics.

Edit: I got the impression from this bullet point on the overview page:

Unique multiplayer modes implemented within the game entourage – artefacts collection, anomalies, radiation, weather effects, day & night change etc

    Well, let me quote something:

And its best thing you can do. In most companies ppl like managers or producers take 5, even 10 times more than the most important staff (in our case artists etc).

I'd agree with this. The first mod team I joined (at 14, for a Deus Ex mod) had four members: Me, as the mapper, one guy (who's now my best friend) as the coder, and two writers, one of which was the "mod leader". Me and the coder got along fine and produced plenty. All the two chaff ever produced was a list of books and quotes that were going to be added to the game as flavor text in datacubes and readable books. It eventually ended unceremoniously when the two writer guys got in an argument and stopped talking to each other, both expecting the coder and I to side with them to create a different mod. We told them to go fuck themselves.

Day of Defeat: Source. It's the one and only online shooter that I can be a sniper in and excel. Having a load of fun as long as I can avoid servers with class limits, admins who kick for swearing, teamkillers, a shitty map, buggy download service that refuses to properly up a missing custom map, or 100+ ping.

I have a question about Clear Sky multiplayer. I was looking at the page, and reading the descriptions, and am I right in thinking that Clear Sky's mutliplayer will essentially be in and around the normal SP game world, with item collection and factions and stuff? And apparently a map editor included to make MP maps? Will there be modes to have two teams of players aligned with two separate AI factions and go to war against each other?

  • How do patches work?

    • Jetsetlemming
    • July 7, 2008 at 7:32 AM

Actually overwriting the files that are updates is inefficient- Diablo 2 and LOD together is just under 2 gigs total of data. Intelligent patch installers can find the file it needs to update, and change it to match the new version instead of fully deleting it and copying over a full copy of the new one.

Things are coming along quite nicely. We can however use a few level designers with UnrealEd experience to work on maps located in New Orleans and San Francisco in the year 2020 or so. If interested don't hesitate to get in touch with ShadowM8 as I'll be in Israel for the next 8 days.

    Thanks

Grrr, if only I had UT3! This sounds like a wonderful thing to get involved with.

I'm not exactly sure what problem you guys are talking about, could one of you be more specific? >_>; There's something there you guys see that I don't, I guess because I'm just used to Deus Ex and other old game engines.
