    More info on Thief: http://gamingeverything.com/42090/thief-to…-game-informer/

No mention of the light gem, and Focus is actually much more than just a loot vision, which really does suck. Like Blink in Dishonored, I will most probably never use it. Xiao Xiao is also very ridiculous for a name and is really jarring in an universe such as Thief's. Oh well, it does sound interesting though.

But Garrett is a cooler guy and doesn't afraid of anything when he wants his gold.

By the way, a guy from TTLG is reading GI right now and reports this:

    Quote

Garrett has been away from his hometown for a long time. When he finally returns to the industrial complex known as The City, he discovers a city of melting prosperity. The region has come under rule of an iron-fisted Baron, who crushes his citizens under the boot of a militarized watch. Propoganda posters speak of prosperity, but this good fortune comes only to the elite. Garrett isn't interested in being the City's hero, but he'll use the political chaos as an opportunity to get rich.

It looks like they kept the mentality of the previous games and didn't make Garrett some 'good' thief, which I like.

    However, GI also reads:

    Quote

Eidos was vague about how faithful it would remain to Thief's original lore, but did say that it would tone down many of the series' magical elements. Players won't likely encounter undead monsters or prowling dinosaurs as they did in the early Thief titles. However, Thief's concept art clearly shows that one of Garrett's eyes is a different color than the other, so it's possible that Eidos considers at least part of Garrett's original history as canon.

Which is a shame. I loved the undead and other similar stuff in Thief, which is why I couldn't really get into Thief 2 as much.

Thief 2 was very victorian though, especially the manors and city buildings (those were more haussmannian in that regard). Thief 1 had slight gothic vibes with, as you said, lots of steampunk and medieval stuff, and it looks like Thief (4) will have a lot more gothic stuff.

    Also, Pogo made me laugh.

True, but I think it still has this mystique I like so much. I don't know, it doesn't look out of place at all.

By the way, the game is now simply called Thief (no subtitle or anything) and Game Informer has a cover about it. Looks like there is a video there but it doesn't load for me.

It's alive, and it looks pretty damn good. Similar to Dishonored albeit more gothic and medieval. I honestly can't complain, even if the protagonist (Garrett?) looks really bad and the bow is kinda cringe worthy.

The title of the game is simply Thief now (no subtitles or anything), is a reboot and is to be released in 2014 for PC and next-gen consoles. I don't really like this reboot idea, but if they do it right it could be interesting.

    Huge surprise.

They seriously need to stop that shit. I was looking forward to this game, but this combined with other people's impressions is really making me think twice. Guess I won't be buying anything off EA anymore too.

I just googled, that looks very impressive! I'll have to reinstall Kingpin and try it out sometime...

Yeah it's pretty awesome. I'm probably more than halfway through, and so far it's very impressive visually and the maps are all well made. There are a couple of strange design decisions and some downright weird 'puzzles', but I'm loving it for the moment. It's also quite hard with lots of thugs thrown at you sometimes, even if the item balance is quite good.

    Is it good, dux?

Right now I'm playing Kingpin, there is a campaign called Night Work at the Factory that was released a couple of months ago but I only saw that today, and I forgot how thick Kingpin's atmosphere is.

Yeah DX:HR is pretty similar to MGS when stealth is concerned, it's pretty arcade-y rather than pure stealth but it's still pleasant despite being quite easy compared to other stealth games, even when you avoid people (no KOs, etc). Playing stealthily in first person is a bit more difficult but it's still pretty easy in the end. However it was the same case with the original DX (can't remember if the stealth was better in IW but I doubt it) so it's not that big of a deal, and besides DX:HR isn't a stealth game at its core.

I never really considered Hitman to be pure stealth since you are almost always in plain sight (which is kind of the point), whereas in games such as Thief, Splinter Cell (the good ones at least ) or Dishonored you are almost always hidden. Still the Hitman games (save for Contracts and sadly Absolution) are great games and I definitely recommend them.

DX:HR had stealth? Okay, I'm trolling a tad, but like the original DX I found stealth in HR really lacking because of the AI, mainly. While not particulalry stupid it wasn't particularly smart either, and the third person combined with the easy way to move around made these stealth phases a cakewalk even on the hardest difficulty setting.

I don't know if you've played Dishonored yet, but you should try it if you're looking for a good stealth game.

I really disliked how DX:HR rewarded you when you wanted to play pacifist. Oh, you didn't get Typhoon or weapon enhancements? Here, have this boss, and lube isn't provided.

I agree that the last boss was extremely easy, and strangely it's the only boss fight I enjoyed in the game.

StarCraft 2's story was extremely chliché'd, Mengsk became an utter idiot while he was a cunning backstabbing bastard in both SC1 and Brood War, and Kerrigan became an emo Zerg matriarch who wanted to die constantly and she was not fearsome at all. I'm sorry, but WOL's story sucked compared to its predecessors. The whole space cowboys stuff was great, but it only lasted like 4-5 missions. Still, I agree that WOL's story is 10k times better than D3's, no contest. Also, the mission design was brilliant at times, but several of them were really boring/annoying and relied too much on gimmicky stuff.

I'm more of a multiplayer type of guy when it comes to games such as StarCraft, but the balance of WOL is horrendous in its current state and it clearly shows Blizzard has no idea how to balance the game. Protoss and Zerg have been dominating for quite a while (I'm not talking tournaments, I'm talking ladder) and now with HotS's beta Terrans were wrecking absolutely everything. Widow Mines are still incredibly powerful, and the new Protoss units are a joke and have not fixed the lack of aerial possibilities for them at all.

If Blizzard addresses this and balances the game correctly I might pick it up, because it clearly all looks awesome. These cinematics are really well made and the campaign looks fun enough, but I'll need to wait and see first. I definitely won't buy this on the first day.

I finally have a decent enough rig to play The Witcher 2, and so far I like it very much. Lots of in-game cinematics though, but the gameplay is satisfying enough I don't really care. I liked the combat system a lot in The Witcher, and I also like The Witcher 2's combat. It's easier, simpler and requires less rhythm. The interface is pretty bad though, compared to the previous game.

  • The worst game mechanics?

    • Skacky
    • February 25, 2013 at 6:43 PM

    Let's see:

    - Unskippable cinematics.

    - Jam on your face when you get hurt.

    - QTEs everywhere. One or two is fine, more really gets on my nerves.

    - Auto health regen when it's not done right, especially when it is in a SP game (it's not done right 99% of the time, sadly).

    - Autosaves in stupid spots.

    - Unskippable intros. I love Dishonored, but the unskippable intro is really annoying.

    - Lack of quicksave. AVP must be the only game that did it right. Games like D2 do not really count.

Not really a game mechanic, but I also usually dislike stupid AI unless it's done right. Quake's monsters are incredibly dumb, but they have great synergy between them. This is pretty rare nowadays, sadly.

Would be great to see on PC, the visual style and background seem pretty awesome.

You won't be seeing that game on PC, since according to them no one plays FPS games with mouse+keyboard anymore.
