Try going someplace real, like a real place in the real world and draw it, and then build it in your editor, the change it, look at it, and start drawing again using that as a style reference. It's easier to get a layout I think when you understand the style you want to use, as different areas have different design and artistic elements that lend themselves to different gameplay.

Get some architecture books, like school books. Surveys that have a wide range of stuff representing all kinds of different styles. We just looked at at some of Frank Furness's work in Architecture class, now don't you just want to map this?

  • Episode II era Source SDK

    • Mr. Happy
    • October 17, 2007 at 1:18 PM

Until then you should *not* merge in the new SDK code as it will not work with the old engine.

This is a little ambiguous to me. Sounds like you'll be able to create a mod using the new codebase prior before you can update your mod's old codebase. So we heard supposedly Oct 30th for an SDK update (which of course was never going to happen) so...we'll be able to map for TF2, Portal, EP2 and make SP mod's using the Ep2 steamappid on the 30th (ya right) and later on down the line Base will be updated

but there will be two versions of base...

and they are releasing the new client/server source before updating base...

god dammnit I just can't wait to explain this to dozens of confused newbs

Unfortunately I agree with Rick_D. I'm a huge fan of the Minerva series, but it's not quite up to par with Valve's work gameplay wise.

But that's not to say it isn't the best SP mod for HL2, especially the best SP mod set in the HL2 universe.

and it's so good that even though its really only a map-pack it deserves to be called a mod

    • October 10, 2007 at 2:36 AM

Have you rebooted your computer? Hammer and other steam applications will often kick out memory errors for no reason whatsoever. Or maybe your have bad ram, or maybe it's one of a thousand different things, but those errors do not have any one specific cause.

Try rebooting your computer and if that doesn't help give some more information about how you made the model and see if there are any errors in the models compile log.

I have a Graphire3 that I've had for a long time and and it's still serving me nicely. Worked on an Intuos2/3 a few times, didn't notice a huge difference in sensitivity (though I wasn't as experienced then and didn't have alot of time to play with it) but they do have little touchpad buttons which are nice.

But don't get an Intuos, you don't need to spend that money.

I'd say if you can find a Graphire3 it's prolly gonna be cheaper, it's gonna do you just fine for starting off, and you don't have to pay the newest version premium. The 4 series is definitely gonna be better *technically* but until you've got a lot of experience down with it, it's not gonna make a difference. It's not like putting a pen or pencil to paper, the feel is different both psychologically and physically.

Just whatever you do don't get the new Bluetooth ones, Bluetooth is evil.

Let me put it this way, go down to Best Buy and play with the Gateway Cx210x Tablet PC, then imagine something that feels either 10x (Graphire3), 100x(Graphire4), or 1000x(Intuos) better, and make your decision.

One of these days I'll get that Cintiq I've been dreaming of *sigh*

Wait what, that thing is the ground? Then...what?

It's flat too, kinda odd that it's shapped like

    ...____

    instead of rounded.

Orange. Orange is dramatic. Also maybe some electrical effects, lightning, particles, stuff like that. HAve things getting sucked up is a good idea, just dont let them take the emphasis.

This is small scene I'm working on for contest/portfolio. Theme is film noir.

Having some trouble with the screenoverlay, getting scaled up for some reason so it doesn't look as scratchy and grainy :/

    Suggestions?

Excellent work, really does the older TF games justice. It's they took TFC, fixed it, gave it a nice coat of wax and some steroids and hooked it to the internets.

I'll have a server up soon.

  • Top 25 selling videogames of all time

    • Mr. Happy
    • September 11, 2007 at 5:05 AM

I'd like to see a list adjusted by market size/percent. For example Myst, one of the best selling games of all time but when it was still being sold and played the market was smaller so of course it hasn't sold 20 milion copies, there simply weren't as many people playing games then (and it was mostly console back then as well.)

Athough because of this I'm suprised (and happy!) to see SMB3 and FF7 on there

So a list based on market share for the first year of sales woud be much more interesting I think.
