  • Tripwire’s $20,000 Killing Floor Grindhouse Mapping Contest

I've been looking for an opportunity to learn UnrealEd (I fiddled with it a couple times in the past but it simply repulses me), so I'll try my luck and create a small map for the first wave. I will have to learn how to create some textures, but luckily, Killing Floor's ones are so fucking ugly that it should be easy enough keeping up the standard.

    Anybody else going for it?

I agree, there are some gems lost around the boards and sticky-ing all of them would be meaningless.

Indeed, it looks like FarCry 2 in third person. On the fourth screen there's a bit where he's wearing a shirt and it looks "a tad" more like Max Payne, but you really have to look for it. It's weird that it takes place in Sao Paulo as well. That's not the exact place that comes to mind when thinking "noir". Then again, I'll wait and see, if you forget its Max Payne, it could still be a good game. Rockstar aren't so bad at what they do.

"]Corwin, I got the file on my FTP somewhere, I'll post it here when I find it. I still haven't played your stuff either, lol! Definitely need to give it a try soon, for old times sake!

Don't worry about it, I've managed to finish the download and will try it later on. Thanks

Still haven't been able to get it from Crymod since it won't let me download faster than 10kb/s and won't let me resume either, but after 2 hours I've got about 2 thirds so I might be able to try it out today. Yay!

New one. Now I need to figure out a way to color this naturally. I want to keep it quite desaturated but I still wanna have some color variation. Any suggestions??

That scene reminds me of Tekkon Kinkreet, the anime, when The Rat gets shot. It has a orange/brownish tint to the lights that I think would suit your illustration well. I'll try to find a picture to show you.

Am I oblige to own the game to take part on debate and give my though !? And whereas you can say I'm not as enraged as you could say. I just feel disappointed with VALVe. That's all.

No you're not, but you have to understand it kind of feels like you just want to throw oil on the fire. Since you can't feel cheated about buying the game, I would have thought you'd take a step back and watch the debate, rather than join a group of pissed-off gamers afraid to be left behind if they don't buy L4D2.

    Quote from Seldoon182

I joined coz I think that L4D2 is clearly dedicated to consoles.

I still don't see the point. What would you care if even L4D was developped for consoles or not, you still didn't buy it. Saying you're against the sequel because it's console-oriented is like saying you don't like medium-rare steaks, oh, and you don't like steak at all anyway. Did I miss something?

Just because you disagree with a company's latest decisions doesn't make you entitled to raging and complaining, especially not when you don't have all the facts. Even if you're from the game community, as you pointed out, Valve doesn't answer to you or any other player. They made the effort to add updates and correct their past games for a long time and seeing how the game community repays them and still doesn't trust them, I'd say they have more than good excuses to stop.

So why are you even joining a group that says you'll boycott the sequel when you stayed away from the first?

what I mean is that VALVe has been traped by their partnerships and looks like they're going to release the content of L4D2 as commercial mostly to honor their contract than for who made VALVe. I mean you and me the game community!

Didn't the interview on rockpapershotgun show that they developped L4D2 because they felt it had lots of unused potential? I can understand that, I mean, L4D is a great concept, it's the first multiplayer game I've enjoyed in years, and it sure feels like there's much possibilities to explore from there. I'd be a developer at Valve and the whole team would be aware of the potential of a new version of the game, I'd be pleased to work on a sequel right away.

I think people overreact indeed, simply because they're afraid of having to pay twice for a copy of the same game. But in the end, they'll realize it's based on the same premises but much different and they'll buy it and play L4D and L4D2 for their distinct experiences. I also agree with the points made about biting the hand that feeds you. You people trusted Valve for years, so just put your faith in it just a while longer and take your stance when the game comes out, then make a thoughtful decision. Joining a group that basically says "The game you've been developing and we know very little about is offending! We won't buy it!" which only effect could be to spoil the developers' motivation is pointless, immature and sad. Don't scream before you get hurt, sissies.

Heh, that's the thing, I don't! I just need these models done because of the gameplay I can script around them, but the texturing will be basic because of my poor skills in that area and that's ok, I don't have time right now to become an artist and a designer at once; so I'll just learn the artistic tricks I need along the way. That said, if it's the only way I can get the textures to fit the surfaces like I want them to, I'll look into it sooner than I thought.

Here's a second 3D Studio Max model for my Crysis level. I can't create textures to save my life, so finishing it is going to be hell.

    [Blocked Image: http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7415/001gtu.jpg]

BTW, I have troubles transfering meshes into Sandbox2 without screwing my UVW Maps. I haven't learnt about UVW Unwrap yet, and don't think I need it since it's just about applying a brick texture onto a surface. But when in Sandbox, the materials are messed up and I have to set new tiling parameters for every sub-material, that make me loose most of the alignments and positions. Anybody know anything about the right way to setup a texture in 3DS so it doesn't change through the export?

I've been playing a bit of Killing Floor but I don't like it so much. The levels are quite ugly and empty, and it's basically about shooting at waves of enemies. Plus there's bugs, like you can climb in unreachable points in certain levels that make it easy to get it done alive. I also hate the fact that the characters walk so damn slow, especially when you're supposed to run to the shop in between each wave and your character does little more than walk and you're like "what's wrong with your legs dude?".

I think it's a good mod, but isn't really worth its 15 euros. I still have to try it out with friends, but for now it's been too repetitive with too many details that bug me out to be fun.

The fact that you can weld doors is cool, but looks too cheap and isn't well exploited. I beleive a convincing way to barricade yourself like pushing furniture or boxes or whatever would have been much more fun, than just a "door-welding gun".

Looks very good, though I'd use a few more polies on the curved stairs, they look a bit jagged.

Agreed, I just don't have a good understanding of how much polys and details I can use without damaging the performance, but the stairs could sure use a bit more of them. Thanks for the advice.

Is it one big model ? or different parts ?

It's a big one, I created the shape using solids then recreated that in Max and exported it as one.
