  • 3DS Max 9/2008 SMD Exporter Update

    • Wunderboy
    • January 5, 2008 at 9:02 AM

Just letting folks now, I've made an update to my 3DS Max 9/2008 SMD Export plug-in.

I've added support for HL1 format SMDs and a crude but functional batch-mode which you can call from Maxscript. I've also fixed an irritating bug with Export Selected not working if you only want to export part of a bone chain and don't include its root/parent bone.

SMD Importer is still WIP but no ETA as it's very much a freetime project of which I don't have much of.

Guys, make sure your Steam and Source SDK is running when using this.

Goes without saying. As it's just a wrapper around the command line compiler you still need steam running for it to work

Just a heads up for those of you who might use it.

I've updated my GUIStudioMDL2 tool too add dual-support for the EP1 and Orangebox SDK compilers. You can seamlessly switch between them as needed without any restarts or hacks and compile QCs as needed.

For those of you who don't know of GUIStudioMDL2, it's a "wrapper" around the command line model compilers from the SDK. It doesn't replace the compilers, it simply gives you a nice Windows application you can use to compile your models without having to mess around with the command line tools.

    yeah..no.

    i didnt do that.

    what i did was..

i went to the utilities tab.. the one where you fin the polycount counter and whatnot. and then i added a new button. i added the tool Scene Effect Loader.

With this tool you can add post effects to the viewport.

load the effects which are under maps\fx\scenes on your max directory.

then just activate the effects ticking the checkbox that says effects. if you wish to edit the fx file. just double click the effect on the list. and bam!

    Display More

    How?

    Rendering->Effects->Effects Tab->Add...

Add blur then scroll down and go to the Blur Parameters rollout and set blur only to work on Luminance.

Set Brightness to 100%, Blend to 60%, Min 60%, Max 100% and Feather Radius to 100%. Go from there.

Use the "Update Effect" to update the effect whenever you change a value.

Or OpenGL 2.0 because it's in fact better optimized than DX9 (needs less calls for operations) and it's platform-independent. The OGL 3.0 specs are coming out soon, and with it, cards that support 3.0.

Isn't OpenGL also just an implementation rather than a hardware "need"? I remember *ages* ago reading a comparison of DX vs GL and it saying that DX is just a hardware API, whereas GL us a rendering system which *may* be hardware accelerated. I think thats why GL is more portable over DX.

Funny actually. I was talking to one of the guys at Valve who looks after VTF format and we were discussing the specific DX10 formats it supports. He said that while the library supports the format, Valve don't actually save any of their textures in DX10 format simply because not enough cards support them and not enough users have them.

Actually I thought SVG was a better idea too but I guess more people are familiar with SWF.

Do you have a myspace account?Think of it this way: swf's can execute any javascript commands. They can dump cookies, sessionid's, and - if something's wrong on your end - inject and execute code.

    The sky is falling!

SWF is just a file format and it's pretty much open. My assumption is their going to include code to open and interact with the SWF files in game as they wouldn't be able to embed the current flash player into the engine.

The game isn't a browser, there is no Javascript interpreter in it to execute Javascript for a start and I doubt things like file operations and code execution is going to work either.

More than likely they'll take an open-source SWF lib and just use a sub-set of it's code to allow vector based, interactive HUD elements that communicate event's back to the engine via LUA or something. Thats's how I'd do it.

Just a word of warning - be careful with this and Valve games. It's possible VAC might interpret the way it works as a hack and ban you if you try and use it with an online game.
