Quote from Puddy
i suppose the game doesn't stop you from having some bad luck and ending up in a vicious cycle like that... I mean at one point things looked really bleak for me but I managed to pull through eventually (senior squadmembers died, 3 council members pulled out etc). But I mean, isn't it nice? A game where things can actually turn to shit?

don't get me wrong, i love consequences. what i'm trying to say is that i'm getting severely punished for things that i was never told. it's a great concept, and i think especially outside of the management game it really works well, but it just seems like it needed a bit of fine tuning (or maybe include something in the tutorial saying DAWG YO ASS NEEDS SATELLITES OR YO FUCKD instead of displaying it as a gameplay tip during a loading screen that takes between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds)..

i figured it to be too good to be true. anyway i'm trying my way through it. the management part is a nice addition but i cant help but feel that they missed part of the LOL DO SHIT OR CONSEQUENCES deal. it's not balanced properly, i've already gotten into a vicious circle of not having money, then not being able to pursue new ufos because theyre too hardcore, then panic level rising because they shoot down my satellites, which gives me less money. it's so realistic that it borders on being a chore, and a stressful one at that. the game takes so many other liberties with realism in other parts of the game, like how shots when the miss don't hit enemies directly behind them (they go through), why the fuck be a dick about stuff like this? it seems like thoughtless design.
fyi i'm playing on normal

i didn't even read your last sentence, but yeah that vocal effect is hella annoying. idk, i still think the best mario game was made in the 90s, and that any game made after y2k is an imposter... even though galaxy was quite alright. i never felt that mario needed fidelity given its particular art direction, and honestly the hd whatever does nothing for me. but then again i've never been a graphics person either. anyway gameplay looks like the staple mario gameplay, above average run of the mill platforming with a few new things here and there just so it barely distinguishes itself from previous mario games.
definitely not worth buying into nintendo's new cashcow for. and a new donkey kong would have to own the living shit out of donkey kong country 2, which we all know was the best dk game ever (it probably won't, because RARE doesnt make them games anymore).
i'd love to see a new warioland though, especially one that was similar to warioland 3. that shit was cash.

XCOM
i fucking love it and it's super addictive, i played like 12 hours straight in my first session. but fuck there's some really annoying missing features that just seem completely overlooked. why can't you pause to the escape menu while it's the aliens' turn? why do autosaves only save arbitrarily dependent on missions instead of in a coherent fashion. drives me fucking nuts.
still, it's good shit. does anyone know to what extent the levels are procedural? their generation algorithm seems almost too good to be true but then again what do i know.

really contemplating getting mark of the ninja, but i'm sort of waiting for a good offer on miasmata. the concept sounds pretty amazing, and i've always been fond of tropical islands

yeah, for me it's the main reason i find it hard to have any respect for some indie devs. granted, not all devs are like this, and many are more or less regular people, but where i'm living currently there seems to be this hipster wave just washing over the land. people apparently seem to enjoy the attitude of making small shitty games that nobody wants to play while getting press from kill screen magazine.
i really hope that there'll be a rebellion against this hipster counter culture at some point, the attitude is like an identity crisis. or maybe indie games will just become mainstream enough for hipsters to back out... how beautiful that would be.

patience, mayan calender is synchronized between 3 and 4 pm EST

it's on my to buy list, waiting for price to drop below 37 eur... probably not gonna happen

-
i really disliked the movie, i don't know why they picked the developers to interview that seemed like the biggest hipster douchebags (excluding yours truly) on the planet.
also, grimrock is probably the only thing i see in that bundle, and i bought it already... oh well.

OT (or in relation to console talk):
i'm hoping that the new generation of consoles become a more hybridized version of a regular computer. i'm speculating what would happen if instead of new consoles, we'd see a new console standard, so that people would be able to build their own "consoles" and just certify them online to see if they match up with the specifications necessary. Then you could have different versions of the console standard that would do nothing but upgrade the requirements for the certification process, and you could have games that were made specifically for a standard. I know it wouldn't be that easy, but it would be a plausible solution.

it's sad to see THQ go, but like others said before, the warning signs were there. here's to hoping that the new buyers won't make THQ into the new activision, because i'd hate to see metro 2133, 2233, 1933 released a year apart... ok, that's a lie, i would love that. but still.

nice assumptions there Skjalg. really, what the fuck are you trying to do here? prove me wrong based on that you don't think I've been to the US for "more than a month" or something equally irrelevant? Resources are available everywhere about the school system and the environment, it's just about taking the time to read them. besides that, if you had checked the source i put up, you'd notice there's much to be said about the environment and what causes these things. you'd have to be retarded to think that these things only happen in the US. people are suicidal everywhere, and i remember at least one particular case in finland where a guy "went out with a bang". the whole world suffers from the problem, the root cause is because people are feeling suicidal and either want to be remembered or not die alone. it's not rocket science to figure shit like this out.
on your side note, i do it because i realize people like you are getting the wrong idea, so i have to correct myself to make you understand what my original intention was.
stop trying to crusade your bullshit belief about me being a hypocrite and focus on the issue at hand instead. 22 children died and you're the most worried about correcting my morals? what the fuck is wrong with you?
-
first off, i said the environment, and by the educational system i also mean the environment that is going on in the educational system. let's face it, the guy probably wasn't the top jock and quarterback for the school's football team. he probably got bullied and his life was most likely miserable in that regard. i consider that in equal part to be the fault of the educational system.
i think you're right in what you quoted, that definitely speaks of what is going on in the media, but it's not the entire picture. you're still not looking at what causes a person to that far down the road. i mean to even consider the option "to go out with a bang" you have to be pretty suicidal in the first place.

i'm not saying genetic disposition doesn't have anything to say but to say that the environment doesn't have a big influence on how distorted these issues become is to be blind to the underlying issues. it's not like it's unheard of that people in broken or abusive homes retaliate after being abused for so and so time. it doesn't even have to be linked to a disorder to pan out that way, it could be just anger issues (unlinked to IED) that build up before exploding into something like this.
-
because mental issues are created from the environment. it's not like mental issues are all created at birth and then suddenly just triggering, most disorders happen through social interaction, through traumas or other issues that in the end force the person in question out to the fringes.
you blame him for having mental issues, but you don't see what could have evoked those issues in the first place.
