I haven't played this yet, but the trailer looks delightful:

Makes me wonder why more games haven't explored survival in nature, there's endless potential for heartbreaking and exciting stories. It'd be so amazing to be able to play out the things you see in the BBC's Planet Earth, Life, and Africa; if it were handled gracefully it could induce more genuine emotion than any game has ever managed (like the baby elephant scene from Africa oh my god).

This is why I tried to get into Miasmata... but the problem is that the game mechanics came in the way of making the game fun or interesting. A more polished version would definitely have won me over (especially if you still had to do the triangulation puzzles)

I have been experiencing a situation where I am given quite a few design tests from different places. I finish the test on time as expected and as closely as possible to the requirements. I then have the experience of being told they do not plan to move forward with my application, which is fine, but I have no idea what happened. Was the test not done correctly? Was there another applicant they preferred more? Was the position filled just before I finished the test? Did I at least get close but no cigar? was I completely off mark? Do they not hire people with Mohawks? lol

Each time this happens I make it a point to ask for feedback on the test. I either receive no response or a response saying that they are not allowed to provide feedback on the test.

This is the only time in my entire life where the design process is a guessing game with no way to further improve my abilities due to a deliberate lack of communication.

It's a very difficult situation to be in. I wish there was a screening process that was more transparent, I prefer brutal honesty over no information at all.

Just out of curiousity, where was this? You can PM me the answer if you don't want it public.

Easy to see that the decision was made to get back the offended persons,.. all of whom most likely won't buy the game in the first place. I'd personally have gone with zero response, the cesspool of people would have found another drama to throw themselves at within the week...

Maybe if we introduced capital punishment for worst comments on facebook/youtube/social media people would wise up... would be an interesting experiment anyhow

Standing desks spread like the plague. Our CEO injured his back while snowboarding and had to get a standing desk. Then we hired a guy to do QA and he wanted one as well (because he is old) and now our game designer is complaining about a sore back and wants one too. And we're just 6 people lol

Are standing desks really that great?

We got pneumatic desks at work, they're great. I stand up most of the time. The only thing I had for a brief while was some knee pain, but that's gone now.

As for the thread: I just finished 3 days worth of cycling, clocking in around 240-250 km. I might need to sit down tomorrow at work ;(

No info? The images tell enough for whats to come, and it is amazing!

Do they? I didn't play Far Cry 3 (I know the game takes place in a tropical island and you shoot many things), but I have no idea what the new one is about because all the website has is an image, information about DLCs and pre-order links. How can you sell DLCs/pre-orders without even showing the game lol

I'm not hating on the game, don't get me wrong (FC3 looks amazing, will probably skip it and play this one instead), but these stupid marketing ploys ubi pulls off all the time really get on my nerve. They are basically treating their costumers like sheep that will buy anything they cherish without even knowing anything about it.

Anyways, I don't want to derail the thread anymore, show us the game now!

Thanks for the pointers guys. Yeah "the coming to life part" is a bit tricky for me right now. I'm trying to look at refs to find stuff that would add make the scene feel more complete without messing with the readability to much since its a cs-map after all.

As I understand it, you're just the 3D artist. I'm sure the designer (or playtests) will tell you whether it's readable or not. So from my perspective, if I was the set dresser/3D artist, I'd just start adding stuff and overdoing it to get it just right. You can always worry about readability once that is done, because it's much easier to remove stuff than it is to add it.

    https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php…et-up-on-May-22

Epic Games will host a casual get together on May 22nd at the Green Lion, Malmö, Sweden (close to the central station, and the Nordic Game conference venue) from 4.00 PM CET - 7.00 PM CET.

We are inviting any interested developers to hang out with us and our Scandinavian friends, enjoy some food and drink, and check out Unreal Engine 4.

Attending from Epic will be Mark Rein, vice president; Mike Gamble, European territory manager; Andy Hess, Evangelist; Alan Willard, senior technical artist; and Alan Noon, developer relations technical artist.

In addition, the evening has been organized by our good friend and Unreal Engine guru Sjoerd De Jong, so there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss your projects and challenges with the team.

It's an improvement. It's still very clean. IMO now that you have the props you should try littering a lot more, to not make the props seem conspicuous. If the props aren't enough, try with dust particles etc. You could also try adding more dark textures to the corners and recesses of the level for more depth. The level needs to come to life. Of course I'm commenting on this as if this is final. I don't know what state it is in right now, so deal with the crits as they are.

Man, what a gem of a game!

Also... yeap, that fuckign minigame is mostly what makes me stay away from it. I didn't mind it too much on my first playthough, because if you really wanna hack something, you have to go through some kind of "pain". But yeah... doesnt really help the replayability.

After you get to craft your own automatic hacking tools it isn't so bad. I remembered why I loved Fort Frolic so much, there's so many uncanny things going on. Like one of the shops has an arrangement of 6 statues (3 on each side) of the entrance. When you go into the shop and come back out again, they're gone. Then you meet them around the level. The best part is, unlike the other enemies, these things are quiet - because they are statues. Such a great concept.

    Also, just found this:

...Levine already knew beforehand how the entire thing would end. Just damn. I wish I had gotten a shot of it before I burned the whole store down.

Started playing the original Bioshock again, since Burial at Sea got me back into it. You can definitely feel it's aged (it's a 7 year old game now - time flies), but on the other hand, it's mostly aged well. There's a lot of openness in the design, and even stuff like configuring controls is surprisingly well crafted. The only thing that definitely does not work is the hacking minigame... it gets old, fast. Still, reliving some great experiences!

Yeah no. I'm seeing more and more groups promoting this too, but really, if there was such a demand for a site like this, why wouldn't they just go ahead and make it, then live off ads and donations? I get that managing operational costs of a website, especially with a lot of traffic, is expensive. But it is not $100k expensive, and the kickstarter does not account for any of the risks associated with it. Maybe it's not a scam, but it's a poor attempt at getting money for something that should not be ushered in through kickstarter, but through the community itself.

I hope nobody here is wasting their money on this.

Looks very clean for something that seems to want to be dirty. The first shot looks like the groundskeeper is fishing for a promotion.
