I understood what he was trying to say. I think you're giving the average pirate (Johnny Iota) too much credit to say their motivation is anything but getting something for nothing, which is not a protest against pricing, drm, quality, etc. nor is it really a side-effect. I'm sure it's true for some people, but not the majority.Edit: I need sleep.

again you're saying the same thing. i'm not giving the average pirate any credit at all, i am just assuming he downloads something for free, an action which is in itself a protest. you're thinking of protest as in some sort of boycott. johnny is thinking that he gets it for free.

It's certainly very glamorous to think it as a protest, but I don't believe this holds true for the majority. I don't see little Johnny Iota downloading CoD4 for any other reason than it being free.

i think you're missing the point here: even him downloading it for the reason that it is free is a protest against something, in this case either pricing, delivery or both. the choices made within piracy usually start with a thinking line going, "fuck that, ..."

i remember playing and replaying warioland (first through fourth) on gameboys and emulators. the third and fourth were nothing short of excellent, and if this is ANYWHERE near that, i am so getting my wii's money's worth finally (if you're about to say buy mario kart or super smash bros to get your wii's worth, then fuck you).

out sept. 26... i might pick it up then, even.

i combine stamina/endurance sessions with regular workout sessions; usually it's monday wednesday friday. while i dont follow any programme directly, i split the workout up into 3 parts (note that this is in the gym):

part 1: regular warmup. a bit of running/rowing to get the blood circulation going (max a couple of minutes each), various warm up exercises.

part 2: workout. on different days i train different parts of the body; although there are some i always work on, like chest and abdomen.

part 3: 20-30 minutes of endurance training. i usually bike here, while others may prefer to run. since this is on a machine, there's a programme you can follow that raises and lowers the levels internally, while you can shift the "gears" to make it harder or easier for yourself; this is very useful if you need a couple of minutes at a lower level to regain some oxygen. at around 2 minutes left i give it a little extra just to boost results, sort of comparable to a sprint run.

a workout like this will usually take 1:30 hours, excluding showertime etc. you will be absolutely exhausted after doing the endurance training, but you'll feel that you're at the top. the good thing about this is that you burn energy the right way, so you use all your carbohydrates for the first two parts, and then consume pure fat on the third.

But when was the last time anyone explored the creative space in a sci-fi game? They do it so they can pull plot twists and magic powers out of their ass. Look at the force fields in HL2. Everyone else can walk through them, I can throw stuff through them, I can shoot through them, but I can't walk through them. Real scientific.

And the intro to Episode 1, the cheapest plot twist I've ever seen. "We screwed ourselves storywise the last time so a Vortigaunt did it. Yeah, they can do this now."

So really, while Treyarch in this case is trying to tell a compelling story within the confines of recorded events, the sci-fi crowd has far more freedom but doesn't make much use of it.

I'd love a science fiction game that WASN'T about evil aliens with a mastery of English coming to kill us and rule our planet for no apparent reason.

so you prefer germans to aliens?

That seems like a really short sited perspective to be honest. Really, there's only one single way to visually and narratively present a game set during WW2? Certainly most WW2 games take the beat path, I'll agree there, but to say that your art direction and narrative/story is completely done for you is non sense. There's virtually infinite number of directions you could take any time period both visually and narratively.

Of course you can try to be original with a WW2 game, but no matter what you do, it will always be a WW2 game, and you can only add those things that really were there in WW2. Sure you can give it a twist, but you can't change it. And that is the whole point. You cant possibly argue that there is a lot of freedom in creating a WW2 game.

Sci fi games can look like minority report, or like 5th element, or like something in between. Or it could have this typical 1950s ufo touch to it, or jakk and dexter like, or you it could take the matrix path. It could be about an alien invasion, genetic mutations, war against machines, massive human warfare, or even a space battle. It could be absolutely anything you can imagine. The guns could be huge and over the top, or simple. It could involve a mechnical arm grabbing helicopters in mid air, or some dude who breaths below water (waterworld alike sci fi), or perhaps it could be Mad Max or Fallout like, or perhaps like Tron.

Those are not just variations on a certain theme (sci fi), they are almost entire themes on themselves. That you can't do in WW2.

The whole point is that Sci fi is an overspanning genre/theme that actually enveloppes many different subgenres/themes, like for example 5th element vs matrix. WW2 is not an overspanning genre, it is subgenre in itself, and it belongs to the realistic and contemporary games. Now comparing contemporary games to sci fi games is a whole other discussion, but there is no way that a subgenre can offer at least as much as sci fi in general. And when any single subgenre becomes overexploited, it will become boring very quickly, exactly because a subgenre can only offer so much, and after a while you have basically just seen it all.

i think the whole point made here lies in abstraction. put it this way: sci fi is an abstractive genre with endless possibilities; whereas world war 2 is a more concrete genre, from the abstractive genre war. comparing them is like comparing a helicopter to a car, and asking why the car can't fly. the genre of world war 2 is very limited because it is so specific and limited (because it is an instance of war), where as sci fi holds freedom because there are no limits.

so figured mapcore could use a thread where one could come for inspiration, besides the usual stuff in the design section. i intend this thread to become a sort of book where one can look inside to fill each individual's respective imagination/inspiration quota. in other words, post stuff; art, videos, whatever, that are or have been inspirational to you, so that we all may gather some as well.

to me ww2 games have always been the epitome of unimagination; more or less everything happening can be deducted from facts.

it bothers me to no end that there aren't enough people in the industry who are able to think for themselves and create something more worthwhile than just a ww2 fps. i sure as hell take gameplay over story, but when you're already locked inside the gameplay of fps, the only thing attractive becomes the story -- and the pacing between combat and puzzles.

i argued that 0 was a number in that it is "nothing" with the property of a number. this isn't so much about math as it is logic.

  • Serious thread: Is 0 a number?

0 is a number, NaN is not a number. in maths and computing, 0 comes before one as an logical OFF state, however if there indeed is nothing, the clarification NULL would be used. 0 is still something in that it still has a property as a number. only nothing can be entirely nothing, without having any other properties.

English is fucked up, for every "rule" there is an exception. Far as I'm concered, writing is only a form of communication, if a point can be expressed clearly with bad grammar or spelling, who the hell cares. People often lose sight of the purpose of something in search for perfection Some people consider themselves above others beause they can write or read better, shame on them.

it's such a shame there are so few people that actually grasp this point. then again, humanity would be eons ahead in advancement if we didn't take everything new and unknown with conservative suspicions, and instead focused on viewing long term goals and the abstraction to achieve them.

i am certain that bureaucracy will be the end of humanity.
