hey guys, i've got an idea: instead of making awesome games, let's instead create a gigantic hype machine and hold off reviews from all companies! i'm sure it'll work better than actiblizzard's cashcow strategy! customers love getting it up the ass.

why not just get better game designers to ensure the games do not suck? is it really that hard? i mean, there are companies that have never released bad games, and they seem to be doing alright... so what gives? is that extra money really worth the entirety of your reputation as a publisher?

i was in japan for a month, trying to visit as much as possible but still being able to get pissed at night, and of course trying to catch up with some of the events happening around. i went there last february/march. i guess "lived" was perhaps a bit far stretched, but i stayed there for about 10 days from when i arrived and 7 days when i got back from hiroshima.

while i was there, ikebukuro and shibuya were what i'd call more decent places to go for a drink and a bit of fun (more "pub" style bars), places like roppongi made my blood boil, what with being assaulted by pimps and "bar-motivators" (you know, those people who try to get you to go inside their bar because it is so special compared to the other 200 bars in the area), too loud music, too expensive drinks, too many people and just in general too much. but i never really noticed anything that would fall in the category of "bad" or "unclean". nobody really did anything to anyone else, people were very apologetic and shy of conflict (except places roppongi). the anecdotes i have from down there were mostly associated with culture shock and customs.

well yeah except all floors in the game shops seemed to end up in hardcore pornography for the last few floors. 2 weeks was just about the same time i spent i tokyo alone (i went to kyoto for a week and hiroshima for like 5 days as well), and i didn't get to see that much. but then again, the place is fucking huge... i lived in asakusa near ueno, and i could travel 90 km by subway before i'd hit downtown roppongi or shinjuku.

as for kyoto, it's a beautiful place, but there's not really that much to do than just look at the temples and buy cheap drinks. miyajima outside of hiroshima and osaka are places i'd have gone instead, had i known. still, i don't regret going where i went.

少しHeh, the Japanese overload is because I just got back from 2 week vacation there and skipped around akiba with geeky glee. I'm in the process of learning and I did okay while I was over there (someone assumed I was a Tokyoite and asked for directions, woo!), but I wouldn't say yes to either of those at the moment

what, are you asian?! when i went to tokyo i spent most of my time in akihabara (not sure whether that's what you refer to as akiba), and it's pretty much heaven for any geek. like an arabian bazaar from the future where you can buy gadget games and where you find innocent looking supermarket buildings that turn out to be porn shops with 7 floors.

did you go outside of tokyo?

Tanks are made of metal. They can get super cold if the heater isn't running. You can however sleep behind the turret above the engine. If the tank was in use during the day the engine will still be warm during the whole night even in the winter. No kidding i sleeped there for several winter nights (without a tent).

fmpone was a mod hopper. don't think he ever finished anything anywhere. i remember the map he made for Insurgency was only a single room of a mosque made of 8000 or so brushes

how'd he get accepted into the team then?

Times have changed. This is why there will never be another CS success story. Modding has become far too complex and will get even more complex in the future. There is a shitload of competition now with other online games and mods, gamers are far more demanding in terms of quality, then you have the console market competing with the PC market etc. etc. etc.I don't even see TC's being released at all in a not so far future. At least none that can only remotly compete with the quality of the games they are made for. So maybe this whole discussion about team sizes will be obsolete soon anyway.

i disagree. it's true that times have changed, but there will always be something new over the next hill. you can't predict what will happen in 2, 5 or 10 years. sure people are more demanding, but in the end this will spawn a new form of modding, unlike of the old. perhaps modding will be reborn as something else...

What i was saying is that rpg's used to be mindful fun, not mindless fun. And this fits perfectly in this topic.

what exactly is the difference? was your comparison with diablo done in order to display mindful vs mindless fun?

i might be the short sighted guy here, but as far as i know, fun is fun. whatever adjective you put in front of it still makes it, well, fun.

a couple of friends and i have been giving thoughts to making a sort of money pool for what will be said in zero punctuation on the topic of a particular game... and while i wouldn't have walked away with all of the hypothetical money for this week's episode, i'd have taken at least half of it.

plus, it had an ayn rand reference! a daring move by an equally daring reviewer.

another example of this is the way mirror's edge was received. an innovative game with a different art direction than anyone else had previously attempted (cynics might say "replace brown with white"). if you take a look at metacritic, which takes a variety of different reviews into account, the game scored relatively low for a polished game on the scale from 1 to 100. looking at the mixed reviews of the page, i could see that the top and bottom reviewers gave it score based upon the same thing: the originality of art and (game) design; the high ones because they believed it was something groundbreaking, and the low ones because they believed it to be visually dull and difficult (source).

in my mind there's no doubt that dice made the right decision in making this game, but the public will never understand it. instead they will say it's good because they like it or think it's "original", or because it isn't "normal" like the other first person games out there. however, when i said that you cannot put blame on neither company nor player, i meant it. it's not a question about one is right and one wrong, it's a matter of friction between those two groups.

in the same sense, you can make the "worst" game ever and it will appeal to the public and you can make the "best" game but won't get any acclaim. people writing or reading this thread probably have a list of contenders to both thrones, and can't understand why this game or that game is played by so many, or why this brilliant game is only played by so few; which does nothing but further proves my point, stated in the previous post.

fine. it just doesn't make sense how he is quoting skjalg then.

either way, those mentioned franchises would have died out fast if it wasn't because people were enjoying them. so yes, maybe there was a degree of "casualization", but let me ask you: where do you draw the border between inventing something new and "casualizing" a game?

games change because people change and our technologies are expanded. chances are that some of those people who played the original rpgs didn't quite like the way they played out, and as such jumped the bandwagon when games like diablo came out. i can see how people would want to put blame onto either players or games, but honestly, blame has no play in this game. blizzard just catered for a market that either hadn't been catered for before, or made it more visible to those who wanted it. so let people enjoy their games and instead focus on making games your way, not the way to please the public. because the public will never be pleased entirely.

...or put in another way: there are more good games in the world than there are good people.

Hm? He never said turn-based combat wasn't fun. He said older style RPG's were turn-based and implied they were better. The average punter prefers real-time because it's more accessible (less options, more feedback).

what i think he implied was that people don't only play for fun, referring to "classic rpgs" as an example. so i ask, is a "classic rpg" not fun?
