    hello you crazy mappers!

this is a contest with its roots in mapwars. for those of you that didn't get the chance to know about mapwars, here's the premise:

small fast contests between few people. you get a little time to prepare a map for gameplay and visuals, then it's off to playtest. each mapper gets a vote, and the winning map will receive... the pride of winning a mapwar!

    contests will include

    • [*:1rqtdhna]60-150 minutes for making your map in accordance with a selected theme (theme presented at contest start)
      [*:1rqtdhna]up to 10 contestants at a time
[*:1rqtdhna]10 minute playtests for each map after making them, one vote per mapper
[*:1rqtdhna]simple engines, not much extra work required (goldsrc/source, suggestions welcome)
      [*:1rqtdhna]IRC channel: contest @ gamesurge.net

since these contests are small and fast, there can be a new one every week or whenever people feel like it. there are no requirements to join, and there are no limits to how many contests we can have. IRC attendance will be mandatory as it is much easier to get info out to people that way. for the first couple of contests, there will be a list of attendees. after that, it's just whoever shows up in the channel at starting time. new dates will be up in the discussion thread.

competitions always start at 21:00 CET/20:00 GMT unless stated otherwise.

below is a list of tools to get goldsource working for the original half-life.

whichever wads we use, we all use. i'd appreciate if we could get a big wad of wads together so we'd only have to download one. standard wads are also included (if you don't like them, then say so by voting differently).

the first contest will be classic goldsource/hldm. i'd advise everyone to try out and make sure that tools etc. work before sunday. this includes compiling and testing!

EDIT: if anything fails, we'll move onto source/hl2dm. (theme will stay the same)

I dont see why he needs to apologize for something he NEVER did too us.... If anything i think all the media places should apologize to its viewing public and Bale for blatantly slandering someone publicly without getting the full story and just trashing someone they do not know... I mean i found that nuetral sites and radio stations were just flaming the guy when they really shouldn't of.... I found it pissing me off that they would even spend so much time on this story and go out of their way for 1 person having a bad day....Bale had a outrage and its the film crews business not the worlds....

Bale = Normal guy who had a freak out and then fixed that problem THAT day. (too me he seems more human than half of the actors out there)

Mass media outlets = Making a small deal a big one and slandering a person

Now i would never blame just regular joes flaming the guy because they hear everything from these media outlets and so they really are not to blame what so ever.

i did mean fun as in entertainment. i.e., you should not be bored or frustrated while playing the game and that you have some sort of motivation for playing it.

okay it seems a few of you misunderstood where i am coming from. i don't want games to be art, to call a game art is for me a pretentious decision with no real meaning. i'm pragmatic when it comes to games; they need to be fun first, everything else comes secondary. this includes story, features and so on. i'm not looking for a deeper meaning here, but i at least want to enjoy the game for the time i am playing it.

...and that's the thing: killzone 2 is just not fun. yes i am aware that different people have different tastes, and this is why i ask: what is it about killzone 2 that you think is 'decent' or 'awesome'? i know some of you have said the combat already, but i'd like to have explained in detail why the combat is so special, what makes it stand out, what makes it fun or immersive or enjoyable. is it the stress relief? is it that you get to be a soldier on a foreign planet in a war?

i just want to know because it doesn't work for me.

I just finished the demo and it checked all the boxes for me as a decent shooter, I'll probably pick it up when my "To Play" pile isn't a safety hazard. Yeah, it’s clearly about shooting people more than anything else, but at least I didn’t have to spend 20 minutes triggering nonsensical dialogue for the narrative before I shot someone in the face and watched them roll down some stairs.

so you're saying the delay before getting to shoot someone in the face is a greater waste of game potential than an entire game full of combat?

i'd be happy if someone explained to me exactly why this game is worth playing, much like i'd be happy if someone explained to me why halo was worth playing. apparently i am born without the brain center controlling endorphine doses for gunning down hundreds upon hundreds of people in a repetitive murder simulator.

since you're going to buy it anyhow, thrik, feel free to describe whether or not the demo is the game copy pasted. somehow i doubt it will be anything else (which is why i won't bother buying it) but perhaps you can tell whether there's more to the game than just combat and ...combat.
