one of my students played it, and i gotta say it looked smooth. especially so because he was playing it on an old machine that could not possibly run any games otherwise.

the problem with doing something like creating a new steam is that it's a digital distribution. consumers do not want to switch between different platforms to play different games, and as such, steam will always have a near monopoly. there isn't a way to sway consumers who have already bought into steam, because just that: they have bought into steam. they have all their games there etc., and do not see a reason for getting an entirely new distribution system just so they can save a couple of bucks per month on whatever games offered on different platforms.

steam is starting to become a concern if they continue down the road of creating games that can only be activated over steam (see the civ5 problem). this could, however, be more or less solved by creating games that can be activated on any digital distribution platform.

scale doesn't matter when we're talking about principle. the civ 5 direct connection to steam was a bad thing, and i'm hoping someone is looking out for this for the future.

It seems you guys don't understand what the issue is here.Let's say Gamestop wants to create his own digital download service and wants people to buy their games there, use their social networking, dlc downloads etc. In their shops however they sell retail games which are already interwoven with Steam. This means they have to sell a product for the direct competition and they can't do anything to break this monopoly except treaten to not sell these games anymore.

The solution here is to give buyers of retail games the choice if and with which digital service they want to connect their game. Just like internet users have the choice between different browsers.

that's quite an elegant solution to the problem. they should vouch for whatever government to intervene and make it like this.

Two Worlds 2This is gonna be the sleeper hit of the year. Mark my words. Must buy for RPG freaks.

yeah i vaguely remember there was a game called two worlds, but i always put it off as trash (given there hadn't been anyone praising it)

i honestly can't remember movies except for two: avatar and rec. avatar is worth watching for the environment alone.

oh and anything by david lynch, specifically mulholland drive and lost highway. twin peaks is also good.

pulp fiction i can watch over and over again, and it's always great. i have also heard good things about from dusk till dawn but havent gotten around to watching them.

i love them pie charts. seems the general community has given you a green light!

i would also advice that you guys actually start building community proper by the use of forum expansion etc. since you're likely to hit more "true fans" that way (if you haven't already).

i'm at the for the republic, part 2, and i can't seem to finish the quest unless i kill every motherloving khan... which is not something i want to do. i've already done the oh my papa quest (i did it before i got for the republic, part 2). i looked over some hints and the best i could get at was to killed papa in his sleep. it doesn't work though, neither the quest or the ncr lady do anything. i've been told that i'm supposed to talk to regis, but he only has the option of "goodbye".

    any tips?

The only thing I didn't like about TDK was

    Quote

the problem with two face was (and is) that his character was missing depth. dedicating an entire movie to a guy with basically a gimmick and nothing else would be 10 minutes of plot spread out over 90 minutes of film. i'm glad they included him, and i have to say that he's one of the better things about TDK (apart from the joker, obviously). the entire movie builds up to him turning into two face, and then going the way of dodo.

point is, you use a computer even to develop console games. or said in another way, a console is just a standardized computer made so it's easier to develop for the same system (+marketing).

rec 2 is out, i'd check that out. paranormal activity has already been mentioned, i guess blair witch if you haven't seen that one. "them" and "the others" as well. also, for japanese horror, i'd go for dark water.

there are also some pretty good x-files episodes you might want to consider...

*aaaaaah* Flashback! :ssj: Have you ever played the SNES Beat'em Up based on the show? That was looong afternoons spent with my friends in front of the SNES. It didn't have a save function, but was really good fun.

yeah i used to play it as well, two player beat em ups were the shit back then (also loved golden axe). though if i would ever get the chance to make a new one, it'd be more RPG-esque. also sorry for going OT, this is thread is yours :embarrassed:

it was still nothing compared to the old games. the same goes for new vegas (which, incidentally, is a step up from fallout (thank you, obsidian's art department!!!)). the worst thing about new vegas though, is that they changed the perks and skills you can get, how they work, and how they skill up (tag skills don't level up by themselves, which essentially makes them... regular skills?)

Tagging a skill is a sort of background choice: It just makes that skill start 15 pt higher than normal. Even in Fallout 1 and 2 tagged skills didn't level up by themselves, you they just went up 2 points for every 1 skill point you spent on them. "learning by doing" has never been a Fallout thing.

Though in New Vegas you can get damage perks against bugs, super mutants, a general "lord of death" one, and some others by killing things. I'm on Bug Stomper Rank 3 right now, which means I do either 15% or 30% extra damage to bugs (can't remember which )

the point is, you don't really get anything sufficient from tag skills in the newer fallout games, as opposed to the old ones.

I gave it a go though I did not have enough time to play everything...though I did want to. For years i've been wanting a good pirate adventure game, and this isn't exactly what I had in mind but the vibe is feeling right. The parts of WoW (Booty Bay esp) that have pirate elements are some of my favorites. Disney's PotC games (based on the movies) have been huge missed opportunities for me since they basically sucked terribly. I know Sid Meier has his Pirates game, but yarr I'm not into those. I just want an action/adventure game in a pirate setting, not strategy game. This is sci/fi/fantasy type pirates, but somehow it feels like it will go in a good direction...almost a Nintendo-y direction.Taylor's feedback (and others) above is pretty spot on as far as I can tell. Overall I'm really liking the idea, and I know you'll get all those bugs/issues worked on so I'm not worried.

I've been thinking about the business model, and since this appears to be not an MMO type or persistent world etc. game the F2P model probably won't work, so you're left with (1) Steam (2) XBLA / PSN ...and that's about it. If the iPad had workable controls for something like this then sure...but that's probably not going to work.

As for getting funding, you are MUCH MUCH further along than many projects I've seen that have received funding, but that's a bigger discussion. Ultimately, the question is how much work is needed to make this a full scale, marketable product and how much money will be required.

Anyway, big thumbs up so far!

it's funny that you say this, i've wanted to create a game based on pirates of dark water (story/theme/universe?) for some time now. the setting is grim enough to work, and the environments in the series are amazingly varied.

Morrowind was the nuts, Oblivion was good, just not as good as it could have been. Fallout on the other hand I think was not too bad at all; certainly a step up from oblivion.

those are nice, but i think they could be better if they were in color. the "polish" color palette is damp enough for them to do without desaturation.

Let me assure you there is very real pleasure to be had picking someone up on a Friday when you're drunk. If you don't remember what you did that night then you do it again in the morning.

Both scenarios have their pros and cons. I wouldn't throw one out in favor of the other.

edit: sucks about your situation D3. hope everything works out.

i beg to differ, but then again i do go out on a binge sometimes. the-morning-after sex is the best thing in the world, though, if you don't wake up with a hangover...

    also, sorry to hear D3.
