You can move it over to the 2009 version of the Source SDK with relative ease. In fact I had to, as for some reason the 2006 branch was just utterly broken for me. I believe the game itself is running in the OB version of the engine as 3Dnj said, though it might just be EP1. It definitely has HDR at least.

    any tuts on this?

maybe thrik could pull some strings in the phpbb code to make the poll need a password or some similar effect.

well it was kind of a given that we'd lose people partial to only one engine if we followed this approach. the problem is that there really is no better way of actually valuing gameplay efficiently, and thus making the contest constraint actually do anything.

if anything, i can only encourage people to pick up on source to try this out. it isn't about winning, it's about participating.

Thrik man, you're forgetting that not everyone who would pirate a game would actually buy it if they had to spend money on it. there's a gap in the market between those who could become customers, but pirate instead, and those who wouldn't become customers if there was no pirating.

this is an interesting little myth. if you want something, then you buy it. if you can't afford it or don't really want it, then you don't buy it.

where piracy differs is that we can take it and never worry about buying.

it's very easy to look at the current situation and say "oh but those games, movies, albums, i wouldn't have bought those anyway" - but that's because you know how easy it was to pirate them. if piracy did not exist, or was vastly more inconvenient then things would be a lot different.

as it stands it's impossible for you to say 100% that pirates would not have bought the game. and while there's people that say they wouldn't have bought it anyway, there's also a lot of shit talking faggots out there.

this is not even a debate, i don't really want to read your reply. thanks. o/

lmao, the amount of butthurt exceeds the amount of arguments here. i already said that this wasn't the case for 100% of pirates, but that there may be some.

gameplay explains itself. you have a game, and gameplay tells how it is played. that is the gameplay. feel free to do the same derivate from graphicsplay.

i remember the last 1024^3 contest we had. while there was a bunch of controversy about the judging and everything, there was a good many of us that went out and tried out the maps, on an official server. i think this should be established again, for a better outcome.

the reason why i'd love to have this in just one engine would be to have playtests etc. i would definitely put game flow and play above art and a "looking good" level. we're not making scenes, because in that case we might as well not bother with the 1024^3 requirement.

also, just to make a triple post, i think used game sales as a whole hurt the industry more than piracy does. but then, used games mostly hurts console titles.

I used to pirate loads of games when I was a broke student, and back then I had loads of time to play games and absolutely no cash at all to purchase them with. Now its the opposite; I have almost no spare time but loads of cash. I usually purchase games, then dont even end up finishing them.

Back then I only saved up and purchased games I knew I needed a key to play online with. (HL/Source/BF/SC/WoW/Hon etc). Now the only games I pirate are games I've bought but cant find the installer for anymore (usually old games like settlers 2 or tycoon deluxe) or games that I have bought, but because the norwegian mail is slow as fuck I didnt get it on the release date. (sometimes i get so hyped up I cant wait to play ). Thankfully Steam and b.net usually helps here. I think the last game I pirated (right after I bought it) because I couldnt wait was bioshock.. And I didnt finish that one either :S

I traded in my xbox for a ps3 because I didnt have time to play anything on it. I purchased uncharted 2, Brotherhood and some other games. I havent finished any of them...

I need more time. Where can I buy time?

reminds me of this idea i had about sleep farms. imagine if you could sleep for a living and earn money, and then there'd be these sleep farms where you'd sleep all day. in the super markets, you'd be able to buy bottled sleep which would give you 8 more hours a day. that would be so awesome.

Have you forgotten how Crytek themselves were burned with Crysis 1, which was widely reported to have been one of the most pirated games ever with a ratio of something like 15 illegal downloads per sale? If those people had bought it instead Crysis 1 would have been a much more profitable game, which is only good for us gamers because it means more similarly awesome games.

Thrik man, you're forgetting that not everyone who would pirate a game would actually buy it if they had to spend money on it. there's a gap in the market between those who could become customers, but pirate instead, and those who wouldn't become customers if there was no pirating.

wait, wasn't this why decals were invented? and in such case, isn't there already a name for this? like, you know, decals, or if you wanna go academic, the kuleshov effect/evocative narrative?

we should make this multiplayer only, to at least provide some cohesion in levels. plus, it's much harder to create a single player level in 1024^3. also, i wish this was source only

i'm still hoping for meritocracy, but people will never accept that everyone isn't equal... least of all americans.

Lets wait and see whats next for Egypt. I don't see any reason to celebrate this as long as its not clear where it leads. It's naive to think that revolution in a muslim country must lead to democracy. The political dynamics are very different over there. It all could be for the worse, maybe with an islamic theocracy or military junta next.

while i doubt they'll go backwards to a theocracy, i agree with waiting and seeing. one of the revolution leaders even said that there may be a period of some years without a government proper, while the country reforms.

skjalg we need to play hon together again!!

i just finished gta4. i still don't get why people consider it great; the auto save system is tedious, the missions were too long and the story was so-so. i preferred vice city, but then again 80s miami will always be better than 2000's new york. actually miami in general will always be better.

and damn, there were like 2000+ people involved in making gta4, i sat through 10 or 15 minutes of credits. the fuck.

wait... so because crysis 2 has been leaked, you cannot use screenshots/reels/etc. for your own portfolios post release, because of a pre release leak? i would assume that you would still be able to publish that content post release. about not showing stuff in the best shape - i'm sure most companies don't care about early releases and placeholder work, and if they do, they're not worth working for.

i am, like skjalg, also pretty sure that the game would sell equal or more copies than if it hadn't been leaked. piracy is still rampant on the PC, so there would undoubtedly be a market loss there (i am assuming there is a market - gabe newell said something along the lines of, "if your game gets pirated, you have unsatisfied customers", and i believe that).

just chill out; it's done. no amount of screaming or blaming or anger is going to cause a time reversal that will prevent the leak.
