Mackin, I love your idea _bMy Photochop-fu is weak but can I suggest a change/iteration along these lines or is it killing what you were already subtly suggesting

i was thinking something similar to this, only use graphics from unrealed or source to create a wireframe cube (making it in 2d but letting the perspective look like 3d)

pretty sure this is how compatability mode is handled in windows today, but that wouldn't require them to run simultaneously. as for 360 games, i doubt it, seeing how difficult it was for people to create a ps2 emulator. hardware is very hard to translate.

Yes the decision to use .NET and Java and numerous other controlled, isolated systems is all retarded, and nobody, certainly not Microsoft, knows what they're talking about over your opinion that performance is all that matters, Sentura.

nobody from microsoft mentioned any of what you are referring to.

"the" performance cost. of vm's. is what i'm talking about. not to mention the memory overhead needed to run x number of vm's at once. there's just no reason to do it when there are more effective ways of doing this, possibly by even easier means. also way to try to avoid the subject by posting random bullshit.

Java and .NET are both VMs, and your browser practically is as well. Compared to natively running code, maybe, but computers are so ridiculous anymore that the performance cost basically doesn't even matter.

no shit sherlock. vm's are only initialized when there are programs using them, and they usually stop by the time you quit the application using the vm. but having many vm's running with each only a few active (read: non-idle) programs will prove to be costly even for today's computers. and lol at saying performance costs don't matter. good code can increase performance by a factor million or even billion, whereas hardware only doubles it, and only every 18 months.

i hear they have courses on the internet teaching people about computers, maybe you should take one.

it'd be costly to maintain many different vm's at once...

man the fuck up, 6.5 is next to nothing. it's ~25 mins at most, and even if the first time is hard, it'll get better over time. a few days ago i biked some 54 kms in a couple of hours JUST BECAUSE I COULD and it was UPHILL BOTH WAYS.

    also biking rules.

textures are still second to geometry

ehhh, with the amount of triangles engines today can push, I have no problems achieving the geometry I want. Texture memory is usually the issue and imo textures are very very important to communicate the look of something, way more important than geometry.

What I hope post-rage megetexture technology will be like: Some kind of virtual megatexture, where everything isn't baked in one huge texture, but this is done in realtime while the game is running. Basically imagine some objects that really need it having huge (mega)textures, while at the same time a lot of stuff is made the old school way of tiling textures, decals and instancing. This way there wont be any restrictions on texture density which seems to be a problem in rage because of there is only a certain ammount of gigabytes that will fit on a disk .

so it would be a bad thing to be able to replace what i assume to be at least some worthwhile amount of texture memory for triangles?

i got singularity and witcher 2.

singularity really feels like a bad port, especially with no real gfx settings and a very limited resolution setting. also no subtitles in a game that uses strange accents? really?

witcher from what i've played is solid. the UI is great, perhaps the nicest ive seen in any game (bar perhaps skyrim, but disregard that as it isn't out yet).
