We've made level design academy with the editor so I think you can grab it from torrents but maybe there will be another academy session so the official download links will be online.

I couldn't find the level design academy on the torrents. But i found these two links which suggest that the level editor of Call of Juarez can be used with Dead Island.

    http://www.worldofleveldesign.com/categories/lev…ign-editors.php

    http://deadislandwiki.com/wiki/Mod:Map_Editor

Can you confirm this? Also if you have the link to the level design academy, point me in the right direction.

Not possible. Coj2 editor is older. The original name of the academy is "akademia twòrcòw gier" and there are all the editor dll's you need. I will look for the working link.

I picked up Natural Selection 2 finally. Can anyone tell if there is a level editor for Dead Island? If so i will be picking it up or else will get it later. Steam sales always empty my wallet.

Anyway, that's kind of what I'm struggling with in my own process right now -- learning how to let go of small details that no one's going to notice or care about.

I've started with making small groups of objects - a perfect composition from every side, randomized objects that can rotate a bit or disappear. I'm using those groups every time so I've thrown out the most time wasting process - adding little details. Maybe this will work fine for you? I guess there's lack of editors that support making dynamic groups, auto terrain/surface align etc.

    A bit more info:

You can make such groups of lights with all the shafts/lamps/effects and use it without opening the group. It's like having a lot of LEGO bricks and use then in the environment. Take a look on my "Making of Catacombs" series of our current project. I've told a bit about adding such objects onto level. Here you go:

    [Blocked Image: http://sharpenyouraxes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Building_The_Catacombs_3.jpg]

There's a screen that shows one wall with 3 different decorations. These are 3 groups with randomized elements (candles, bodies, pictures on wall) so each looks different. Make few such boxes and here you go, high detail ready. You need to find perfect solution for repeating the same all the time but don't let the player notice that... Dynamic groups are perfect for that.

Not sure what you mean by games- it should work just fine on all platforms though (iOS, Android, PC, Web, etc).

The "BSP-style" forced me to think that it supports HL or Quake engine OK, now I get it

Nice, it's like 3DSMax + BSP! What games it support?

The beta stage is not a secret, right? Can I post info about the editor on Level-Design.org?

Less gay than Halo, no pink weapons and troll-like enemies - cool. Can be nice but I don't trust Bungie after all that ridicolus design decisions... I believe that the team can make such a graphics but still those are only the concept arts... What about gameplay? Nobody knows...

Every Halo fan I know is somehow a bit crazy. I see that Apple fans are less psycho than Halo fans

I think the truth is right in the middle - you can make a great scene using lightmaps but not with 100% black spots and without sun lighting. With dynamic lighting from sun and other lights it can make a great mood.

Right now I'm making fake AO (bake to texture on 2nd channel or vertex paint) on meshes so it looks nice locally but in global scene I need to use special darkening meshes with some magic shaders Still it won't make the scene feel like with realistic baked lighting.

    Interesting

Somehow I'd love to have lightmaps in my current project - I'm tired of adding vertex paiting or fake baked AO into material...

Making stuff without a plan or making not interesting things like placing lights is boring. I was making few timelapses and each had a plan what to do, what asset to use and I was trying not to move the camera and don't look for assets/stuff to long. Here you go:
