Super 8 is actually Half Life the movie guys. Gabe paid JJ and Spielberg to do it.

I'm kind of curious why they shifted from that really pretty yellow/purple lighting scheme on the approach to the city to an off-whitish lighting scheme once you enter it. Are they trying to convey mood by making all of the background appear as bone-colored for the whole dead city theme?

I'm pretty sure it's still there, it's different areas of the game.

I always preferred SP games on top of MP's.

And when I play MP's, I stay with 1on1 or very small teams of TDM's. The only game i actually enjoyed the mayhem was TF2. In any other games, i find it frustrating dieing by acident just because some fucker spawned behind me, if I ever die it should be a punishment for my skills (or lack of) not due to randomness or bad game design and spawn points placement. (Yes, I mean you CoD)

GT mentioned it's pretty long, and the co-op campaing makes it even longer!

Today is some sort of MK's special day, a new MK is getting released and there's loads of new media over at GT.

MK games have been shitty since Mortal Kombat 3D, but this new one actually seems like worth buying.

"Realism isn't always fun"Best thing tim willits has ever said.

Couldn't agree more! It's great to see that even though they put a lot of effort into art and at some extent, tech; gameplay is still point #1.

You can tell their main focus really is to create simply a fun and enjoyable experience, no matter if it's realistic or not!

Weapons feel like their loads of fun to fire, it's relatively fast paced, I love the animation on those enemies and their hit-kill reactions. It just feels like it's loads of fun to bring those mutants down and see them going down in different ways. (Like on that indoor scene with the bow, the mutant turns his back and runs, gets shot in the back and the animation / ragdoll triggers accordingly, i just love that.)

Visually It lacks in some aspects, even though you can really see mega texture working in here, ergo you never see repetitive patterns and every area of the game looks very unique, the LDR render isn't helping very much. And I find the lack of specularity in the metals a little bit of a let down, making metal look very washed out and looking like plastic. It's lacking glossiness highlights.

I also think that color grading was a little bit overused, making the scenes look a bit monochromatic. And the transition from one color grading pattern to another is a bit abrupt.

The vegetation are billboards, which is a shame. But since their aiming at a 60fps game, it really helps saving performance, but personally it's a cheap trick.

So yeah, I'm glad to see It's still a id game at heart and I can't fucking wait!

Cool stuff, may I also offer you some advice?

Post a few more wireframes of your objects. If you're starting as a freelance and don't have a stable list of clients yet, you need to sell yourself as best as you can, so post wireframes of your objects with smart modeling. Employers will wanna see you can make good geometry for their games and not something that looks good but it's very unoptimized. Good UV'ing is also a good thing to show.

Good luck and welcome to the core.

PS. by good uv'ing I also mean, re-usage of texture as much as possible so you have a good pixel density. Not just uniquely map everything.
