17 hours in, finally the game is starting to be a bit chalenging, and I'm playing on nightmare. Good fun tho, loving the combat, and as you start to get sentries, bots, homing wingsticks, and so on it gets better.

Actually I would say go the other way around. Turn the sub-d's down!!

Work on the low frequency detail first (on sub-d 3/4) when you are satisfied with the silhouete, start incrementing on your sub-d values slowly. (Don't go more than 6/7 it's generally not worth it) if you already have millions of poligons and you still have stretches in your geometry (like in the screenshot) than it means you're either carving too hard or your base mesh doesnt have a uniform/even tessellation

Theres only one rule: LOOK AT REFERENCE PHOTOS!

It seems too blobby atm, but I would need a reference to see what you are trying to achieve.

And about Doom 3, many adjectives come to mind, but best looking isn't on of them, quite the opposite actually, to this day I regret buying it along with Q4, although I grew up playing quake and doom and am a big fan of both series.

Wut! You just lost all credibility I had in you with that line only, right here.

Yes, use viz-areas to have interiors only! Just create a huge area that encompass all your level and be done with it. (Although you can go advanced and can connect one viz-area to another with a portal, tutorials soon hopefully )

Oh fuck yeah, we had loads of fun working on those subways! LD is from chris, the set pieces are from Tim B and level art from me!

Still want this, I'm not paying $60 for it though. Does the game actually look like the screens you posted, HP?

Yes, the game looks great on this kind of vistas, the light baking looks great, notice the AO on the rocks, gives it a nice volume look, and far distance looks very sharp because of the aliasing from the lack of mipmapping we use in conventional games. On the downside, It may look blurry on some areas if you get closer, you notice low res difuse map, low res texels, noticable color banding, and compression artifacts.. Here's an example of how low res is looks if you get very close to stuff, but the env art itself is great, it's just a shame that you don't get pixel perfect detail but it's the price to pay for this tech.

Still... It's a beautiful game, and for how fast paced it is, being low res shouldn't really hurt much.

wow, did anyone see the monstrosity over at Metacritic for this? I really dislike Metacritic, but damn, so much hate out there for this game 172 negatives

Holy fucking shit... This is the living proof where trolls, ragers, haters and fucking fanboys definitely win the internets, take it home, bag it and clean their ass on it! What a shitload of fuck seriously.

    http://www.develop-online.net/news/3883 ... es-Carmack

Also.... Carmack just said what everyone already knows, Carmack just said what everyone has been thinking for the last couple years but never ever had the guts to admit, Carmack has the balls of steel to say what's going on with pretty much ALL the major AAA studios out there (including his) and he gets bashed for that... but of course he does, that's how society works isn't that right? I'm surprised it even comes as a surprise to anyone what he just said, everyone's concentrating on consoles now, the only developer I can think of that still makes AAA for PC is Blizzard, and even so Blizzars is it's own league.
