review is in there. personally i think it was pretty accurate. e.g. the first time I launched the game it took 5+ minutes to load a map.

The 5 minute load time thing, even if it only happens once per map, happens every time the game gets patched. It's pretty unnaceptable, I agree.

But overall a pretty inaccurate review, they even got the price wrong...

want, but not going to buy 20 year old hardware to play this =/

I know what you mean. Here I am getting all caught up about this game, but until it comes out on PC, I probably won't get to play it :/

This sort of illustrates the problem:

On the one hand, it's watchable... but there are issues. You don't know exactly what you're watching unless you're already sort of initiated and know the editor. Sure, you're seeing something come together, but it's not educational because it's happening too fast, and it's not really entertaining to see some random shit happening on an extended basis.

Watching it more slowly it's the same problem, just taking 9x as long to happen. So no, I don't think level design is as compelling to watch ultimately as someone making a gun model and having it slam together relatively quickly.

It takes too long to do good work in level design. It's hard to put an hour total on it. And what you're doing is random. Loading up the game, noticing you misaligned a texture, noticing you run up against a wall, loading the editor and tweaking it, rinse and repeat. It's mind numbing work to get to a final finished product, only an insane person would watch someone else do such work when they could possibly be doing such work themselves, and therefore making it less boring.

Some techniques I've seen to make it more tenable would be to fast-forward the process. This could indeed be fascinating, and probably hugely cool, but time consuming as well and incredibly useless for somebody who is trying to learn. It would be for entertainment value. If I had the initiative to do some such thing, I might. In fact it sounds kind of cool.

I think the very best games do fulfill this promise of an experience over a game, but then there are games that are incredible that take this idea and toss it in the trash.

Each scene really needs to have one predominant color imo. Right now its so fragmented your eye is attracted to no particular color and the end result is jarring and unpleasant. Pick a color, and make sure its saturated, make sure the geometry and texturing in the scene doesn't undermine it.

It might end up being not too far from the truth, though. Valve's been giving Linux a lot of attention, and it doesn't seem too unlikely their next game may coincide with a general push to disrupt Microsoft's dominance over the PC gaming space.

It's almost like Gabe has been planting the seeds with his comments about Windows 8 and the efforts to get Steam fully working on Linux. What better game to give a major shove and encourage giving Linux a try than HL3? Imagine if they included Linux-only DLC.

Microsoft would freak out and immediately try to accommodate Valve, to make them look like assholes if they didn't adapt it to windows

I think if this is something you enjoy, you should pursue it for that reason purely. If you can improve it here and there to make it more inclusive, that's cool too, but the goal should be to make something first of all. I think this would be an awesome project to pursue and polish

Is it a remake of cs_museum from way back whenever?

    JOSEPH!! *shakes fist*

It's an original map. It's got some placeholder materials from an old museum map, but we're phasing those out

    Hey guys!

So it's been a little while since my last post, here are some things I've been working on. New skybox, and a preview of the interior (sans-Tyrannosaurus MotherFeckin Rex) (click here for my primitive concept art of that)

In other news, PenE and 3DNJ are going to help realize some of the custom content for the map. My gratitude to them for that! You can see some of PenE's texturing in the interior shot (some of it is old yucky placeholder, though).

    What do you think?
