I cannot think of any other studio who used to do AAA premium games and has transitioned into a F2P company. What they are doing is either very stupid or genius. Time will tell. Either way now they are going all-in. When you look at core F2P titles, when you look at what Riot and Wargaming have been doing, or the MMO space, I think it shows that you can have high quality F2P experiences for core gamers. Moving forward, especially as far as young audiences are concerned, I think it's going to be an increasingly tough argument for developers to make as to why a customer is supposed to pay $60 upfront, when you can play a similar product for free (and get to choose how much you want to spend on extras).

Looking at the current selection of F2P games, I can see why it's hard to imagine a F2P future. The monetization model for example, you can't just take the model of one game and slap it onto the other. It doesn't work like that.

God you're so right. I don't even understand the F2P attraction for Crytek, what companies were they really trying to emulate? I'd love to learn why they felt this shiny pricing model was worth totally upending their entire company for

I would totally want to play around with the new Hammer if it weren't attached to a friggin' MOBA. Guess I'll have to wait for a new game to appear...

I honestly feel the same way, sort of handcuffed by the genre. L4d3 will be a watershed moment.

hmm, that looks pretty fubar. Maybe they'll work specifically on backwards capability though.

GO is really fun, it may be not be 1.6, and a lot of people obviously wish it were, but at the end of the day it's got almost 200k concurrent users daily now. It's got some of the most exciting tournaments in E-Sports and more huge tournaments coming up. It's got the most creative community out there IMO. It's got bar none the most innovative extras and DLC-type stuff ever conceived. The devs are really observant of the community.

It's obviously doing something very, very right. Is it right up your alley? Maybe not. But I also doubt you've put much time into it. I can say for myself that mapping for the game happened first, and enjoying it happened second, but that's because it's a brutally difficult game even if it's a brutally simple game.

Don't get me wrong, there are some legitimate criticisms of the game. The official Valve servers run like an absolute dog-shit sandwhich covered in poop sauce, which is not cool for an E-Sportsy title. Valve dances around the issue of 128 tick servers, which would please their hardcore community, blaming performance reasons that don't apply to those same hardcore folks with great rigs. The amount of hackers is still Too Damn High. Still, serious problems though these are, I think most people will see the great game going on there either way.

big news today, seems like Valve is testing Source2 with Dota2 first.

It's a radical change as far as I can see compared to the good old Worldcraft 2.1 I first used in 1999

Here are some of the changes in the new Hammer:

The editor compiles to a new map format, vmap_c

It also uses a new model format, vmdl.

You can import tgas, FBX files, and here's a list from facepunch of the rest:

    • Brushes are now meshes and act like models. You can edit by face, edge, and vertex.

    • New particle editor / realtime material editor

    • Better prefab support, just drag and drop a prefab from the asset browser to place and double click in the viewport to edit it.

    • You can blend ANY materials together on displacements in hammer, no more specifying $basetexture and $basetexture2

    • Custom Tilesets (Might be Dota specific)

    • Realtime Lighting, WYSIWYG

    • Hammer has its own model editor and asset browser

    • The developer binary of the game as well as hammer run through what's called vconsole, where you can get feedback and run console commands just like the regular ingame console

    • There's a new 3D viewport manipulator that lets you transform as well as change lengths of meshes which is quite useful.

    • Pivot points

    • Compiling doesn't freeze your PC

    • The engine now uses a new type of models, vmdl

    • They also dropped bsp, they now use a custom format named vmap (vmap_c when compiled)

Looked at it some more before I return to CS:GO mapping for the night: the amount of crossover between the new hammer and the old hammer is pretty shocking. They're honestly much, much, much more alike than they are different. I'm pleasantly surprised.

    Down.

Been looking at the tools, the tile tool seems like the best way to quickly make stuff. Then you need to "paint over" it with the really detailed style, I guess. That's my current understanding. You can see the example maps "pvp" and "pvp_tiled" for an example of the distinction.

    Hey, that's cool!

I would add some beveling to the horizontal trims, as well as trying to sharpen the shapes a bit, get some more angular bits to contrast some of the nice bends and smooth areas. Cool start !
