Really cool architecture Will, you're improving a lot. This is a solid step forward for you. I would say the buildings are a little flat still, why not dig more of those details into the brushwork, create actual depth instead of relying on overlays and decals to do so much work. Also I would try to be really cognizant of building things based on real world photography from now on, recreating things and trying to be accurate will help you avoid very flat sort of boring surfaces such as in the last photograph.

I like your use of trims, try to take it to the next level. Trims on the ground where the floor meets the walls, trims around details, those sorts of attention to detail will help you get to a more aesthetic place with your work. Really cool stuff for the most part, keep it up!

L4D2 or Portal 2 pls. They look visually better than HL2 and many will care about that (including me, as much as I love HL2)

Is seriously no one picking up reneGABES?! That's amazing!

Thanks; unfortunately (and surprisingly) the Renegabes stickers are the least rated items in my workshop. I would presume this is because they draw on retro pop culture that is outside of the scope of the core audiences' recollection, and so only a small number of users can relate to it. When putting them together I was constantly smiling - but they've become a joke no one else really gets! My initial plan was to make an entire collection of them -- but based on the lukewarm reaction I can't really warrant putting the time in, unless just to amuse myself!

I think the likeness isn't quite there enough for people to recognize personally, it's close but no cigar for me

I think the problem is more fundamental than keeping track of stuff with a spreadsheet or even scope. The main issue is why should people care to work on it, what is their incentive, what is the point. Money is a motivator, and I'm sure if Mapcore made something good there would be money to be had, however, that still doesn't provide creative direction, doesn't help us directly decide what to make. UE4 could be motivating in that it's a new exciting engine, but I don't even think that would be enough in the end because it's presents too many open-ended possibilities. Concrete, simple motivation would require a goal or an objective everybody can work towards. A standard HL2 level doesn't rise to that level either, although it is at least concrete. People would have to say, during this stage of the process, "we should make a three part HL2 level with a distinct beginning, middle, and end; which tells the story of escaping from a sinking ship". Something like that I actually think has some chance of success in this context, but then the hardest part would be to get everybody to agree with the overall mission statement and creative narrative arc.

Do you think you could make the process transparent for newbies by letting us shadow along and see how a collaboration process would work?

I get the process of creating a level by myself, but I'm clueless as hell how a group of people streamline and exchange info and pass along work to each other all under 1 map file.

Obviously that's something that would have to be organized and coherent, there would have to be a mutual understanding by small groups in order for that to work. Groups of maybe one or two people per map, organized like how Minos was saying, would probably free up a lot of people to do what they're best at. That's how it works in CS usually.

The biggest problem with mods is that people go AWOL and aren't accountable for their work, that always ends up happening because at the end of the day, people aren't being paid, when they could be elsewhere.

I thought this was about the Mapcore Moderation team, and Sprony was going to tell everyone about the weird stuff we do in the trees together at night. Thank God he didn't tell everyone about the weird stuff we do in the trees together at night, that would have been really awkward.

I don't think we should make a generic FPS. I think we should go more in a Aliens or Dear Esther type direction, more of a focused experience that does something fucking crazy we can all be passionate about. More interesting that way. Single-player a must. Seems like it's gotta be UE4, Source2 ain't out...

Ya I gotta go to classes, that's factored into grades. I think all I really want to say is give some advice, don't do things in your life just because they "sound logical" or because other people want you to, you won't be happy. I'm consciously doing something I don't want to do because it "seems smart", what I never considered would be how hard it gets some days when it really becomes a chore. I'm really grateful for all the opportunities I've had and people I've gotten to work with, it's why I can be optimistic in what has become kind of a painful time for me. Love the Core, keep being awesome guys.

Law school is actually killing me. I get an average of 3-4 hours of sleep a night, haven't been to the gym in months, I miss my family and my dog, I sit in class and stare at my desk, my limbs feel like they are made of spaghetti. This is my last year but I can honestly say I am miserable, bored, and sick of being here. I woke up this morning and felt like a flat sheet of paper, it feels as if I've lost 20 pounds since school started. It's not even that it's hard, it's easy and obvious and anyone would be able to spend one week preparing for the stupid test at the end of the rainbow. Angry these days.

I use photoshop to make the textures, and edit the .vmts in vtf edit, I guess that's what it's called, it's basically just notepad tho. How to make white walls more interesting is to use normal maps, vtf files referenced in the vmt. Season uses normal maps a lot to give the plain modern surfaces some tangible depth. Obviously it's more successful some places than others right now.

    Just one word, AWESOME !

Loving every unit of this map, every place is unique and has this feeling that I'm in there. The sense of scale and immersion in this map is purely amazing.

Congratz FMPONE and TED for this release, going to test it right now.

Sorry, I made this post using a template from Crown

Also, just a shout out to Rick_d (wonder when he gets back from his banhammer?) for inspiration, 3DNJ for letting us use two skybox props from Ruins, and of course penE for making two props for the map that look pretty cool Much love to the Core!

I agree the VFX are pretty insane right now, but it's still such a cool scene. I'd like to see a little bit more composition elements (maybe a chain dangling on the left really close up to the foreground?), but there's no denying the awesome look. Really fits a "warrior" theme, that's for sure.
