  • Crysis Map ~ Operation Codename: Vulcano

the map is visually awesome HP. it could be better in some gameplay points. the AI seems to be only placed onto the map and is not doing a lot. i hope it doens not cost you to much points. the Ai fitted my skills hehe. i liked the open gameplay. maybe you could add some action between the mission routes. its a little bit boring to just wander around and look at the trees. but you are an environment guy so its ok for me.

im learning to do SP maps at the moment. your setup gave me a good start.

  • "Halo" around foliage textures - How to?

    • April 23, 2008 at 10:20 PM

    Well the topic tells it.

I would like to add this "halo" like border around my foliage textures. The shader uses alphatest and its for some pine trees. the needles are not looking like they are supposed to do. maybe my needles are to fine but i would like to stick with a 512px texture for a branch.

But I didnt manage to recreate this effect in photoshop. maybe some of you can hint me to the right way.

    Thanks for help.

narby this wouldnt make sense. you can take a look at yourself.

its just because im using the HP custom config at the moment and it delivers higher values when using the vanilla config.

No Jeanpaul i mean Overdraw. Its another thing. As you know Crysis got a lot of displays for optimising and possibities. But maybe I missed something important. Thats always possible. It was my first map on this engine.

I concntrated on viewdistance and sprite distance for vegetation, texture load, draw calls and other minor stuff like setting up occluders.

It would have been possible to include the occluders into the modesl but i used the old crytools because of the tight contest deadline. using the new tools was tricky because you need to assign material-ids. the new exporter was not avaiable as i modelled my custom objects.

    Warby:

Yes i should have not used the stock cable texture which comes with Crysis.

    JeanPaul:

This is strange. I'm playing with an Ultra-High Config on DX9 and get arond 30fps on my rig. It runs on a 1280x1024 resolution with a 8800 GTS 512.

I collected feedback and the people had no problems with the performance. Most report were 20-40fps.

The overdraw and all other values are within the stockmaps limits. I'm always focusing on performance while developing my maps.

I'm sorry you have such problems.

Thanks guys. Im happy you like it.

The community seems to like it too and we had some blasting online rounds. was really fun to sneak around or just fire the rocket launcher.

Im glad all worked out as it was intended for this level. the cryengine2 really helps the artist to do what he has in mind. very powerfull tools but to bad the online community is so small. and MP support is really crappy.

After two months of hard work for the Crysis / Intel Mapping Contest I'm happy to release "Borderline".

Like many of you followed the WIP-Thread I won't write a lot more about this map.

I tried not to do the typical Crysis look. I'm a fan of derelict and old architecture so you see it influenced. I got my inspiration from browsing flickr.com. Textures are taken from CGtextures.com in most cases and edited in photoshop.

Gameplay should be Crysis like. But my intention awas to create a natural environment with the possibility to use the Nanosuit specials.

    Some facts:

    Game: Crysis

    Gamemode: Instant Action (Deathmatch)

    Size: 6v6 should be fine

Theme: Forrest and City. A good mix of both

New Textures / Models: Yes. Plenty of them

You can also vote for my map. If it makes it into the top 10 until 15th of April the Crytek-devs and other qualified guys will judge and review the map too. So I'm happy about every "star" you give me.

    i love the lighting.

but like the others i think the floor could use some more work. maybe some decals or concrete plates as paths.

yes i thought the same about the concrete. maybe i'll leave the map alone for one day and work with a fresh eye on it afterwards.

Why not working for GSC? DO the pay Rubel or Dollars?

Anyway, the map is done and pushed to RC1. This means no more features or models will be added.

Final testing within the next few days until submission deadline. Some texture tweaking here some color correction there.

So final C&C is very welcome now.

    HP:

Thanks for the feedback. I changed some things you mentioned. It was very helpfull.

    Nurb:

The bloom looks strange because of the DoF effect while aiming.

I was considering the same while looking for a game for doing some levels for. But as the contest stated I thought "why not?" because there are some decent prices there and made a map.

CoD4 is also very intersting but I think I will stick with the CE2. Or go back to Battlefield2.

The RC1 will be avaiable shortly. We will do some additional testing on wednesday. So if someone would like to playtest the map just PM me.

Heres the Beta 2 status report:

One mayor thing was the overall lighting. I'm using the [HP] config and it makes Crysis looking good and colorful. But on the other hand if someone plays the level without the config the lighting looks flat and boring. So I reworked the whole ToD to make it look as near as the [HP] config as possible.

The map also got a lot of performance tweaking. I reduced the textureload around 50MB at all. It was around 220-260 MB per frame because most of my textures were DXT3. Now they are DXT1 for diffuse/spec and .tif (using the Crytiff plugin) for normalmaps. Now it loads between 160MB in most cases but the peak doesn't went aboove 230MB per frame.

A nice side effect is a smaller download too.

Another performance gainer was to set up the maxviewdistance and spritedistance. Bushes got culled too soon and people playing at "low" got an advantage. Its well balanced now.

New models for Beta 2. There are around 7 new models. 4 Environment model which make the city skyline background and three new buildings. I decided to replace the brick barn with a metal one ( visit flickr.com for a lot inspiration ). Since the barn is one of the main chokepoints it looks better and offers more possibilities for attack and defense.

As a little gimmick I put two MG-Nests into the map. They dont do much harm to players but its a nice toy to play around with and maybe do a kill.

Last but not least nearly all detailing models are set up. Theres a lot to explore.

The next few days I will finish the barn area, place some solids and weapon tweaking.

after this long update thats what I did the last two days . Finally

    two quick running-around-ingame-hots.

If you wonder about the fps ingame. my rig is a 4400+, 2GB Ram, 8800 GTS 512MB. High Settings DX9 (with DX10 effects) 1280x1024 driver set to quality and 2xAA.

Thanks dude. You are always welcome to help me out with a testing session.

I tried to consider the Nanosuit advantages into the gameplay. You can reach one more sniper with a clver jumping. Even some basic trick jumping is in there hehe.
