  • Day of Infamy Map Contest Update: Deadline Extension, Regular Testing

    • Xanthi
    • November 25, 2016 at 3:14 PM

@modtools @Todes It's good to hear that you were receptive to the feedback we gave. We wanted to take that opportunity to let you guys hear from the development team itself how we felt the maps could be improved.

However, in the interest of fairness and our own time constraints, we are not able to offer continuous feedback beyond this. It would be difficult to give every one of now 18 maps an equal and fair amount of feedback for each iteration. We did want to give that one round of feedback for all the maps, that was one of the purposes of the streams of which you speak. Hopefully it all was constructive and useful.

We acknowledge that some maps haven't been streamed yet, namely Mercury and Normandy, and they haven't heard any feedback. So for those, or any other new maps that would like to participate in this testing, we'll give some feedback in the form of a post here on MapCore.

@hdkhh_ It is a bit tricky with timezones unfortunately. We chose these times because they are friendlier to people in the US and Canada, especially considering their west coast. We noticed that this timing means more players, and we feel it is important to get plenty of players exposed to these maps and playing them.

Yeah, it's so much fun to watch people using VR for the first time. I ordered the Oculus touch controllers, can't wait to try them.

    Hey everyone,

Our playtest last Sunday November 20th went very well, thanks to everyone who showed up and participated. As we said before, we're going to continue to do this testing every week leading up to the contest. The next test will be Sunday the 27th at 2:00 pm EST, with a deadline of map submission/updates for Saturday the 26th at 2:00 pm EST. Please note the change in deadline. This allows us more time to reset the servers and make sure the playlist is still functional.

We have decided that we will not be streaming any more of these playtests. Our original plan was to stream some of them, possibly every other week, but we realized this could be considered unfair. Some maps would get more exposure than others, which could affect their feedback and reception. Not streaming allows everyone involved to focus on gameplay and testing rather than presentation, and lends itself better to fairness in coverage.

Last week we played Brest, Westwall, Foy, Bure, Metz, and Ramelle. There are a lot of maps to go through, 17 as of now, so in the interest of giving every map some level of coverage, we are going to cycle through them. This upcoming Sunday we will play maps Mercury @the0rthopaedicsurgeon - Kruppstahl @JakHalz - Heidel @GRiNET - Alps @Todes - Aachen City @zastels We are saying this now so those authors are aware in case they want to make any sort of preparations.

These playtests are informal and not part of our judging process.

Looking forward to testing your maps!

The deadline to update your maps is November 20th at 12:00 PM EST - 2 hours before the playtest starts. This will be the deadline for subsequent playtests which we plan to have take place every Sunday at 2:00 pm EST. If you didn't submit your map yet, please send me a PM as soon as you can so we can make sure it's added on our server.

@Andre Valera We do understand the fact that it's very close to the holidays. However, extending the deadline any further won't go well with our timeframe in terms of judging the contestants, preparing the first place winner's map to be in the game officially (possibly other maps too, we'll see), and general development of Day of Infamy. I hope you understand.

We understand that some people are upset about the extension, because it might seem like a disadvantage for those finalizing their maps and accounting for the previous deadline. However, this extension allows for more time spent testing, iterating, and improving. After testing all the maps ourselves, we found that many of them would benefit from the extra time. We discussed the possibility of an extension internally and decided this was the best way the contest would turn out high quality maps that are a lot of fun to play on, and will be better representative of a person's ability overall. We hope that you all understand our rationale in this and we look forward to playing your levels.

    Hey everyone,[/b]

We’ve decided to extend the deadline for the Day of Infamy mapping contest from November 24th to December 22nd. Your final map will now be due on December 22nd.[/b]

We noticed that some map makers were requesting more time. These nearly four extra weeks will hopefully give all our contestants more time to polish and finalize their maps. We are already excited by everything we’ve seen so far in our community playtests, and can’t wait to see how the maps turn out.[/b]

Also of note, we are going to start having regular playtests with developers and DoI players every Sunday at 2:00 pm EST, 8:00 pm GMT+1. Some of these playtests will be streamed as we have done previously, but not every week. Please understand that we are not necessarily able to provide equal time for every person’s map in these tests, or in any livestreams of these tests. Map makers are encouraged to join us to see their maps in action with players playing on them.[/b]

If you want to have your map included in these tests, direct message me here on Mapcore and our team can add your map to the playtest list here to be tested: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/fi…ue&id=793269906[/b]

If you already have a map on the playlist, feel free to update it as you see fit. We will restart and reupload any updated maps to our servers before each test. Please remember to not change your map’s name.[/b]

Be sure to join our Day of Infamy Steam community group so you get event updates whenever we test: http://steamcommunity.com/games/447820[/b]

Thanks and good luck on all your continued work![/b]

I think VR can really push the RTS genre to the next level. Same btw with AR.

blackdog How can you say it's unplayable if you didn't play it yet? Game development is all about trying new things to push our industry further as a whole.

@spu Unfortunately we noticed a lot of missing materials on your map and in this state we can't test it tonight. If you update the map before the playtest today we might be able to update the server in time.

@poLemin Thanks for the update, but just to be clear, your map is the same item as the one currently on the playlist correct? Because if so, we won't need to take the item you linked and do anything, it should just automatically update.

@zastels Did you add a script for your map in the doi/resource/overviews folder? If so make sure the "material" parameter is set to the correct texture file.

We're using a playlist that contains the name of each map. If you rename the map the server can't find it anymore. Each time a map is renamed we have to correct the name in the playlist, so we basically have to go through each workshop item and make sure the BSP name is still the same. Unfortunately, that is not something we have time for, so to keep things clean and make sure everyone's map is still working it's better to stick to the same name and workshop link. You can just update your map in the original workshop link you provided us and keep the same BSP name. It should be the same name as the original one you uploaded. I know that updating a map with the same name sometimes causes issues on the user end. But in most cases, it works fine and it automatically updates the map for the user on steam. So in this situation it's the safest option.

So to clarify: update your map and Workshop item so it has the exact same name as the original version you uploaded.

    Hey guys!

We had a lot of fun testing your maps and providing feedback on the stream last night. Thanks so much for coming out, we'll upload the video to our official YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/insurgencygame/featured Unfortunately we weren't able to test all of your maps since there were so many (twelve!), so we've decided to host another playtest and stream on Wednesday November 9th at 5 PM EST, 11 PM CET. We will aim to play all the maps we haven't yet played. Please notify us in this thread if you make updates to your map already on the playlist, or if you have a map not yet on the playlist that you want included. The deadline to submit a new map and map updates is November 8th at 12:00 am midnight EST. Please do not make any changes after this deadline. This is a bit of a short deadline, but we want to cover as many maps as soon as possible to give everyone enough time to make adjustments before the contest is over. We intend to only play the maps that we didn't cover in our stream yet. However, there might be a chance that players will stick around and try some of the updated levels after the stream. So we suggest you still try to update your levels in time. To make sure your map is properly updated and submitted for this test, please take note of the following:

    1. For those who already have your map on the playlist: If you want to update your maps, please do so, but make sure they have the _same file name_ as when you originally uploaded it. 2. If you do not have a map on the playlist: Please upload it to the Steam Workshop and include a link here in this thread so we can add it to the playlist. If you posted your link in the other thread, please post it again here for redundancy. We appreciate all the hard work and creativity you guys put into your maps so far and hope to see you again in our upcoming event!

You can keep updating your maps until the event starts tomorrow. Which will be probably around 8 PM CET. I keep you guys updated.

@zastels No worries, maybe we do a follow-up event after this one. Shouldn't be too hard to add more maps, now we have the system in place.
