the only reason shit like "sudo apt-get install update" seems complicated is because you've grown up on windows. it just takes some getting used to.

YOUVE GOT IT MAN!!!! HAHAHAHA You just won the thread.

That kind of attutide is why Linux is never going to become mainstream.

Linux was never mainstream. And it wont become mainstream. I wish, computers werent mainstream at all.

Yes, i am 12. Im not a grown man and im not pretending to be 12.

If your initial reaction was that it was a "shitty" shader, why did you suddenly think it was good looking just because it was modeled?

Because those hair shaders arent very realistic but need relatively much performance.

Looks very neat. Actually, i thought you make that character for OpenArena. UT2k4 is cool too, but a bit outdated IMHO

That looks very nice to me. Actually, my first thought was "and again a shitty hair shader...". Then i saw, that the hair is actually alpha mapped. Nice work!

And, the proportions are ok IMHO. Or, you never saw a east european or a asian?

And then Microsoft will publish it on XBLA out of the goodness of their heart. Being Microsoft, you'll recieve a fair publishing deal ensuring you won't get screwed out of your IP rights or money.Oh wait, that won't happen at all. They'll go Valve on your ass and strip you of your IP for below market value because you're new to the industry an don't know any better. If you try to talk to a lawyer first, they'll threaten to pull their offer for somebody else that is more willing to have their game published on XBLA. You'll walk away with a few grand. Microsoft will walk away with much more. And at the end of the day, they'll be an amusing Slashdot story that is forwarded around people's inboxes about how M$ screwed some young developer and how they should have known better.

Wow. I cant believe that this is posted in a windows-dominated game designer forum. I could believe that this forum would transform for one second into a Linux-Forum...

i think you have to "code" such textures. dont ask my how...

You need to write proper material shaders. Thats no coding at all.

see, what the hell is that? How should he know that? Updating drivers should be as simple as just running an updater or so and its done.

Linux is never goign to get popular if code is involved.. even if its just having to change 2 lines in some config file

And it was also definitely more complex than that...

When it was, than youre friend used Automatix and it messed something up. And UPDATING drivers can easily be done with the update manager. Also, you can install the package "nvidia-glx" trough the Ubuntu package manager or trough Synaptic (Synaptic is better though). Just need to search for nvidia-glx and you can install it. Updating is done automatic. And the configuration stuff gives you the controle of your whole system. Like, you dont want some modules who are loaded into X on start. You just outcomment 'em, finished.

last week my roommate installed the latest version of kubuntu on his brand new machine with one of those free cds you can get from the site. To install video drivers he had to go through a rough procedure of config files, console commands and asking questions and help on some irc channel.

    ???

    Code
    sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx

    nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Change driver from "nv" to "nvidia". Thats it. Or when youre talking about the ATI-drivers, you need to know that the ATI-drivers suck ass.

Second thing that pisses me off, Desktop, we have KDE, we have GNOME, we have blackbox, we have all the damn Desktop managers that when it comes down to it OFFER THE SAMN DAMN THING.

Maybe the same damn thing but in a different way. Or, how do you want to install KDE or GNOME on a low resource system? KDE or GNOME would work extremely jerky on a 500 mhz machine. Get XFCE or get a simple Window-Manager like Blackbox, Fluxbox (my favorite) or IceWM.

    Quote

So I ask you linux folk to explain to me why is it every time I install a new distro I have to figure a new Desktop manager.

We dont. Or is the KDE who is shipped with Suse not the same KDE who is shipped with Ubuntu? Or RedHat? What shit are you talking about? Not every distro customizes the Desktop Environment anyway. Maybe you mean some system tools who are only working under APT or RPM. Or Package-Managers, like Synaptic.

    Quote

Third and final thing, I have to ask WHY WOULD I WANT TO COMPILE EVERYTHING ????

    1. You DONT need to compile everything. Good distros got packages for everything.

    2. You are talking about Linux like you would only use Slackware or Gentoo. What the hell should that mean?! Never heard of binary based Distros or what?

Dude, that was 6 years before. That was the beginning of KDE and the concepting of GNOME. *lol* Since then, much stuff changed. There are very nice configuration frontends for KDE, GNOME and XFCE. Also some universal ones. You dont need to config around. Sure, you still need to mess around with the bash when you want advanced configuration. All basic stuff can be done by those frontends. Like, internet connection (yes, WLAN works now!), graphics-driver, printer and stuff. Ubuntu has even a lovely frontend called Synaptic for his package-manager APT.

When you dont believe me. Compare:

Just saw the movie before. Jack Thompson was pwned!

I cannot believe that violent videogames are making violence in reality. I mean, we are living in a frickin' world. Everytime, everywhere, you see violence. In Music, in movies, in theatres, oh wait, on the streets too. Dont forget, our childs are dumbed off because of bad education, violent moviez, gangsta nigga hiphop, porn and all that stuff. Explain me NOW that videogames are violent...
