I'm with Sentura on this one. I don't like all this mumbo jumbo either, or rather... I dislike people going overboard with it. Not every puzzle needs every mechanic in the game. Sometimes it's fun when one of these new mechanics are the focus of a puzzle though, but I don't think it needs to be mixed with everything. Most vanilla maps do it right because of the progression and all that. The player made maps tend to just be overly complex (not necessarily more challenging) because well... you can.

Now this I agree with! The most difficult puzzles in Portal 2 had very few mechanics and somehow managed to be fun and challenging.

And concerning the minor use of momentum/flinging/catapulting in Portal 2, I personally suspect that it's partly because the game was more widely released on consoles and that shit is harder to pull off with a controller. Valve didn't feel like putting a "barrier" in the game I reckon...

Portals are still the vessels for all other puzzle mechanics and portal surfaces still define the puzzles heavily. I can tell you without a doubt that a Portal 2-length game would definitely fall short if no new mechanics were added to the mix. There's only so much you can do with flinging etc...

    But let's argue taste!

I'm with HP on this one. Bioshock 2 was bit of a train-wreck storywise, and story is such an integral part of the Bioshock DNA that you can't ignore it.

Hammer closes down on startup. The in-game editor is probably fine.

    Aaaand it's fixed!

Does anyone else feel sort of resentful towards the Perpetual Testing initiative? I feel sort of like it's undermining the efforts of "real" mappers and modders.

Also, no one in their right mind would ship a level with this new editor, which uses apparently a constant 64 units grid. You simply need to get lower than that if you're going to art up your portal 2 level to a good quality.

For me it is far more important that this tool can produce maps which run well and are bug-free. As long as the the visuals are readable and don't interfere with the puzzle experience it's fine by me.

And yes, it kinda makes sense that they limit the tool to Portal 2. In Portal 2, a map can use two textures and follow the grid religiously without looking that silly.
