Load UDK, learn the engine, get a game that uses Unreal, make a mission for it, become famous
I assume that Unreal would be the most popular engine at the moment, so just stick to that. Or work with Source and make a really great Level Design for one of the recent games (Portal Puzzle, HL-Singleplayer or something for Team Fortress 2).

i LOVE your portfolio. seriously, the layout is awesome, the resume is short and informative and it reflects some very good work of yours! only thing that bothers me slightly is the hover effect of the thumbnails on the main page (the black horizontal bars) - i'd rather see the image brightend up or something that let me see more of the work instead of less.
oh and ffs - apply at crytek! i just read across your post mortem again and that's like the most awesome article ever on a personal portfolio

Dont care about contrast ratio because at the end of the day, all that "dynamic" contrast is just fake. 1000:1 static is all just fine for consumer screens.

Well, as much as you probably would love to show your work, don't do it right now. CE3 hasn't been released to individuals by now (read: crysis 2 isnt in stores yet) so you probably used a company-provided software. As such it is theyr work and your not allowed to show it. However, as I understood it, you worked with CE3 default assets not provided by the company? So in that case just ask Crytek if you could show it or wait until Crysis 2 has launched. "Recreate" your work in the editor (c'n'p it) and release it. They didn't pay for it, they don't own it anymore the moment you create it on your own licence of the engine.

looks exactly like world-craft for warcraft 3? in that case scripting aint that hard for the small tasks. learning jazz (thats what the script language was called in warcraft days at least) is kinda complicated though. might just give the game a go for the editor

The beginning looks like a total 28 days later rip off only to evolve into some kind of i am legend-postman mix? looking forward to it!

What steppen said. More in series like Lost or Chuck or HIMYM.
Games - only Half-Life series maybe. Everything else is more meh meh, Crysis did a kind of good job but it was so dissappointing ending that it destroyed the nostalgic moments.

looks cool! neat prototype and your documentation shows clearly where things can be added easily later on.

ATi is fine in its latest generation here. Just one thing messes, is Autodesk Products. Motionbuilder can be one bitch with ATi Graphics and 3Ds Max and Maya tend to lower performence sometimes (though not as brutal as MoBu).

i hated oblivion just as much as gothic 3. heard that risen is the win in comparsion to these two. not an rpg fan my self though. torchlight is the only working rpg game for me.
