way too much retarded shit espoused in this thread.

talking about consoles dragging a PC game down is bullshit, rebellion develop games on pc, looking at the pc version and only fixing problems on the consoles - rather than designing for them. this is a big reason it looks like shit because they haven't actually bothered to play towards a certain consoles strengths.

look at MW2, looks great across all 3 platforms. why? because the developers aren't retards.

as for "the story couldn't be anything except blah blah" - take a look, again, at MW2. the story is ludicrous and frankly very loosely tied together - but it's presented in such a way that it becomes exciting and the content of the game becomes the story.

where rebellion lack is they cannot tell a convincing story; they cannot get past "move here, shoot these".

why is a game using a ps2 engine requiring you to run it at a resolution from 2001..

Edit: Just to preface these questions, it's not a "is it worth it to learn x" question, more of a "how important is x relative to y" question.

Just out of curiosity, is this just for slightly complex shapes needing to be included for grey/white-boxing purposes, being able to model a level/scene in 3DS/Maya for projects that don't yet have a fully functional engine/editor, to make full blown small custom assets, or all of the above? I'm focusing most of what I learn on scripting and predicting player actions since my understanding is that most studios have environment artists who do all the modeling work.

Granted, I know the situation can be vastly different depending on the size/philosophy of the company. I have a limited amount of free time, so I'm trying to focus my energy on what will give me the biggest return on time invested and be most attractive to potential employers.

you will be creating rough shapes using either a "brush" based tool (think hammer, unrealed) or using a 3d program (3dsmax, maya, xsi, and most places now will use sketchup if they have any sense - because how easy it is to use for basic level creation).

a good idea (imho) would be to get into an engine you are familiar with, that has a single player campaign. use the assets, textures and "universe" of that game to create your own levels. because this is what you will be doing in a job, placing assets created by someone else, into a level built by you. heavy emphasis should be placed on the gameplay - but unfortunately you will have to make sure it looks relatively appealing as well.

Is it necessary to bring this kind of drama from one forum to another? It's unfortunately true that what one team member says or writes in public reflects on the whole team. But let's not forget that at least 4 mapcorians work for InterWave and we are certainly not suddenly all little DaveL's.

So please don't let this personal drama between esJ and Ben escalate into full-blown company/game bashing. That's not cool and hurts all of us.

that was fun - but holy shit. mod teams and drama.

who wants to make a mod about mod team drama?

Okay, so who remembers this terribly managed, released far too early, buggy, unfinished, under-polished, overly hyped up, BRILLIANT GAME? If you don't then please allow me to take you back to 2007!First, let's start off with possibly the best hype trailer even conceived:

Stopped watching the second they tried to sell me a game by using a fucking retarded ass in armour.

I wonder when we will have games sold to us without the gratuitous use of sex.

And just the regular use of it, like everyone else does.
