  • How are you supposed to judge artwork?

in that light i would say it's something that pushes the boundries of our current tech understanding and provides a new benchmark for people to aim for.

like how every outdoor scene is judged against crysis, even though that game is nearly 5 years old. or how portal is seen as utterly stylish but never really goes out of it's way to try and "wow" you in the same way that say, modern warfare does (big explosions and semen everywhere).

"what is art" is going a little bit deep for the baftas and tbh they probably just want you to pick some shitty british studio that made something that wasn't complete shit - which is probably going to be the hardest part of the deal.

oh look, a post apocalyptic zombie game with nathan drake as the main character, and is so cinematic it might as well be a movie, but has 1/100th of the budget and production values.

i am sure it will be truly a fantastic experience and i'll be jizzing all over it in half a year like a hypocrite, but jesus christ ND aren't exactly pushing the envelope. still, at least this will actually see a release unlike that ubisoft vapourware.. what was it called, alone..? "i am alive", that's the one!

i don't know what that it? it's like rock, but it's so obviously zbrushed, there's no joints or breaks in the surface? dunno, seems a bit early to start texturing/adding material

thanks for putting up google checkout - i was able to donate now.

personally i don;t give a fuck about how shady paypal is, i have never had a problem with what i use it for (used to use it for steam / subscriptions to snuff porn websites / etc), but since moving countries i can't keep my original email and change payment details without a huge amount of hassle, and paypal's solutions are pure shit. they can suck a fucking dick.

  • Moving to another country

    • Rick_D
    • December 5, 2011 at 8:03 PM

problem is it's quite hard to leave the country without some experience, as companies aren't as willing to bring in someone for an entry-level position from outside the country - that's not to say that if you were to find a job and take care of all the moving costs and finding yourself housing that they won't employ you.

a friend of mine got a job in canada purely based on his portfolio and a bunch of phonecalls/emails. so there's not even the need to worry about flight costs etc.

my advice would be to get your portfolio in order, focus towards something specific: if you want to do art then make sure you do art (vehicles or levels or weapons, try and focus on, and get better at, one specific thing so you can make your portfolio really shine in that area). use a good engine to show off your work (i'd suggest cryengine), and start applying; it'd be a good idea to get some contacts from isnide to pass along your work, there's bound to be some people here who can help (dark, zombie, etc).

once you are in canada, there's a lot of studios so it's not a big problem if you lose a job or decide you want to switch studios.

also, there's a couple studios in an around stockholm - thought about trying to get an entry level position up here and moving? if your portfolio is good enough then it's easy to get a short contract - and even 6 months looks good on your resume and will help you get jobs elsewhere.

I wouldn't call it hours, I'd say an hour or less. And even prior to that I considered the game entertaining, it's just that it picked up pace efter that first hour. I'd recommend you give the game a brief second chance; if you don't take a liking it's just not your cup of tea probably.

You're right. It's actually pretty crazy how good MW1 was and how far they've strayed from that game... but you know, american xbox-kids need their fuckyeah story and their guns and their in-game brofists and their hordes of evil russians and their animated loading screens with lots of cool banter and equally cool callsigns (oh shit those guys are reaper 2-actual - fuck this is good game design).

To make MW3's popularity and praise less depressing, you can draw a parallel to all other mediums. It's usually the shitty movies, books and music that cash in (transformers, twilight, justin bieber/similar). To provide additional comfort that some things are still done right in gaming, there's always BF3 MP. <3 Your coffee-related expertise will always be appreciated for that title.

just to be 100% fair here i did practically nothing towards bf3 mp (some optimising towards the end, and that was only asset-based, not getting my hands dirty) - the guys that worked on that deserve all your praise. email them, they'll appreciate it

i still think bf3 is the most fun mp fps i have played since tf2.

    check out this: http://redlettermedia.com/half-in-the-b ... -the-moon/

it's the same guy who did the star wars reviews, and it's very good, and as you say: most of the problems games are having, other media is having as well. i know we're not all stupid, i have more faith in humanity than to just give up and say "the lowest common denominator wins". man fuck this gay earth if faggots in suits can force us to make more and more of this mindless shit. half-life 1 and 2, fps games, where you are a guy in power armour who kills aliens, yet it's SO much more than that; why do we have to have idiots who whittle down the call of duty games into "constant action and big cinematic events" - MW1 was so slow paced when you look at it, and people loved it, it was massively popular, yet we get thrown into this direction by fucking idiots with some capital that they probably stole from the government through tax fraud anyway. lol edgy teenager mode disengaged!

apparently you need to play the batman games for a couple hours before they get good, but for me that's too much. i am starting to have short patience with video games so forcing myself to play a couple of hours just because it might get good is hard for me to do.

mw3 is just such a giant parody of itself at this point that i don't know whether to laugh or yawn. the art is also fucking dicks, same textures IW used in 200-whenever, and the gameplay is just constant closset spawning enemies, hundreds of guys thrown at you.

it makes me wonder if anyone ever played MW1 and realised what made it good. protip: it wasn't what you think it was.

in fact the parts that sucked in MW1 are the parts that seem to have been used and expanded in MW2 and MW3. i don't want to kill 500 guys, i don't want shitty lighting and noisy level design and texturing, i want a good experience and i don't mind if you make enemies 10 times harder if it means there's 10 times less of them.

i played the russian airplane map, and loved the turbulence and the floating in the air killing, but i was so desensitized to action that what should have been a fucking awesome mission was just another shooty bang bang spamfest. did anyone realise while playtesting that there's about 100 enemies on that fucking plane. where did they come from? why is that considered fun? fuck you infinity ward, fuck you sledgehammer, fuck you activision, fuck you video game consumers. this is pure horse shit.

it also really depresses me that we are watsing all our best efforts, the big money and the fluid game experience polish on something as shit as this.

imagine if they spent these kind of dollars and polish on skyrim or something, we'd have fantastic games. but no, we get this. "the most anticipated game in history".
