  • 3d Studio vs Maya (for game development)

Isn't maya merely aimed at the high-end spectrum, for movies and films and such? I know a couple of folks that use both and they are pretty different applications - each just has their own way of doing something. As long as you know what you want the end result to be then you'll pick either up pretty easily.

At the end of the day if you can make something faster and better in one of the programs, then there's no real reason to switch.

I was considering getting maya just to see if I should be using that instead, but I figured why bother, it's just another piece of software that I don't need to learn, I can get by just as well with max and do everything I need to do. When the day comes that I realise I need to use maya for so-and-so then I'll pick it up and get started, but for now all I'd be doing would be stretching myself thin and not spending enough time learning all I can about max.

Also to address the 'hitting some random key' - that can be frustrating when you first start, but I'd really suggest going into the key configs options and just scrolling through everything, take an hour or two and just set everything up to suit you; unbind all those keys that your chubby fingers hit often or at least bind them to something non destructive.

Couldn't agree more -I'm glad the RPG elements have been toned down a little, I like having the character consistent throughout the game, you don't suddenly get ungodly strength and super speed: you know your limits and can use your head to achieve goals, not just grind for hours and hours just so you can stroll through the harder missions.

This is going to be an amazing game, I can't wait. I have a semi-on already <_<

Man I haven't been this excited by a game's release for years, not even HL2 had me this interested. I only hope there's some money in my bank when it comes out

I dunno about where you live but the gamers and retailers in this town are so ignorant that it either won't be in the shops, or there'll be some copies left for me when I get down there

No other reasons than currency strength? The guys in China who do props for my levels get payed about 1/10th of what I do. And that's not because I get payed a lot.

Well, I was just wildly speculating - but that's how things are in various other trades I've worked in: if you can get something cheaper and of roughly equal quality (sometimes just cheaper <_<) then you'll do it. When it becomes too expensive to keep in-house or in the same country then you look to other sources. That only remains true until it costs you an equal amount of money to outsource it, after that then why bother?

I love where you're going with this - maybe add in some more dramatic lighting (colours!) to the more bland corridors. Lose the decals, though please

I love the cross-thing, maybe you can work in some more stuff like that around the map, give it some continuity.

This is really looking great now

[edit] Just a small thought, the outside bits are really cool - maybe you could put in some glimpses of the outside from areas deep inside the "base" - a few grated portholes/windows that show a little of the outside, with some light streaming in. It'll give you a chance to use the much loved dust motes too

Also I am not keen on the grass textures of the cliffs, too green.

I think a lot of it comes down to the strength of currency - if the dollar can't buy twice or three times as much as it would at home then I don't see a reason for people outsourcing as much - as has been said, it's a very fickle industry that is effected by many other uncontrollable outside variables.

Hahaha. The thing is, that trailer released in 2001 or whatever was really awesome and got me so pumped up for it, especially with Duke being a childhood classic of mine and it starting with the old footage. I hope they do a similarly amazing trailer to get people wet, even if it'll be a bit deja vu!

    Ah yes, here's the baby - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUAy8hQ3zWM

The game does have the potential to be absolutely superb, even if as nothing more than mindless action and puzzles like Duke 3D. It's a shame the massive development time hangs over it though as the current version has probably only been in production for a few years (almost all previous assets I'd imagine would have been rendered obsolete long ago) and people are probably expecting some giant game that's been in development for a decade.

Sorry for dbl post but why the fuck didn't they release DNF? The way they showed that trailer made it look like the game was done? And it looked awesome. Man, retarded.

Why is it whenever somebody doesn't know what to suggest or what they're talking about they suddenly bring up saturation - less or more of. Not aiming that at you Sindwiller, I see it everywhere. It's like the generic "I don't have an opinion" comment.
