One thing I noticed from playing through all the maps is that people have been cramming lots of shit into a small space in the hope that it'll play well - the problem is that it doesn't. Lots of ladders and stairs and narrow corridors are not working for such a small space.

Anyway, has anyone decided on a voting system? We were talking about what they should be judged on during the playtest and came up with a few categories, to be marked out of 5.

Gameplay/Execution/Use of Space - how the game plays, the deisgn/flow, and how well they utilised the small space.

Visuals - How pretty it all is.

Theme/Design/Originality - The way the standard content was used to create something different to the other maps, the overall intricacies of the level.

Performance - how well it performed on your PC, this will obviously differ wildly, but if a map has a good performance rating on all types of systems then you know the mapper has done something good. Also some of the maps are just plain laggy.

lol @ 'not yet etc' - I updated the map pack - I'm not doing it again, the deadline has been reached, if you update your map tough shit.

If people agree to it I will upload any maps that have not yet been added but I'm not updating any already submitted maps.

oh by the way, thanks for uploading your maps to the server, the later updating them and causing everyone to have a 'map differs' problem; and then not bothering to tell anybody - now I have to update and reupload the map-pack a-fucking-gain. You silly silly cunts.

Ok guys, server is back up (if you see somebody called greyfox tickle his balls and put a thumb in his ass for being such a nice guy).

I was going to give out the rcon password but decided against it incase the server gets fucked up again.

I'm going to change the roundtime to 10 minutes because there's a lot of maps to test; which brings me to a question:

How will we judge the entries?

Just to offer up some suggestions: perhaps we can have the server up all week with all maps on rotation and have a vote here for which maps are the most fun etc. Then once we have a clear set of 4 - 6 maps that are leading we can set them to be on the server and have a big ol' playtest with longer roundtimes; and follow it up with a vote (set out some categories like "gameplay/use of space/visuals/originality" - I dunno, have people give reasons to show they actually played the maps instead of just looking at screenshots).

Probably an easier way to do it, but I think some of the better maps need more playing alongside each other to judge them properly - also it'll add an element of tension, like survivor or x factor

Von Ferret; can you add this to your initial post:

Ok a quick update due to requests (and the fact I had two official maps in the cycle - I don't play DM so I didn't know any better ;D)

These maps are running on the server:

    dm_asgar

    dm_tobor

    dm_capricious

    dm_tyr

    dm_conscript

    dm_rocketsilo

    dm_grace

    dm_northfacility

    dm_postoffice

    dm_repeater

    Password is:

    mapcore

    Rounds:

    15 minutes or 100 kills

Grab the current maps here (server d/l is a little slow):

Not implying credit-taking, just making sure that we actually do what is wanted by the people who entered the contest and by the thread-starter who was implicit that gameplay should be a major element.

OBTW ferret, don't know if you noticed this:

    Quote

Ok ladies and gentlemen; once you've finished your map completely and utterly upload it here:ftp://[email protected]

You have read and write access but you cannot overwrite previous versions of your map so _only_ upload it on or after the deadline and when you are completely happy with your bsp. If you somehow fuck this up then contact me and I will have to do it manually, but I'll curse the air you breathe if I have to do it. Oh no not the fist!

The server is also up and running at the moment, it's been left open to all to generate a little publicity for the hosts and mapcore.net. However once we have all the maps uploaded we'll password the server and give the information in the "final entry" threads.

    IP: 195.242.239.13:27015

The name of the server is http://www.mapcore.net HL2DM Competition | Phoenix-servers.co.uk

Just to give you a run down on the settings the server is running:

    timelimit: 10 mins per map

    100 tickrate

    default everything else

If you have any requests/suggestions get in touch and we'll try and get it sorted out before the deadline. Don't come shouting about something on the actual day because it'll most likely be too late and I'll once again curse the air you breathe.

What day do you want to hold the test on?

I would like to suggest that we have a mapper only test and voting, and then get some general pubbers/non mappers to test it and get them to vote as well and do an average score so we get the full range of opinions. With 10 mins per map I think that is feasible.

    Display More

From the rules laid out by the competition starter:

    Quote

    - Play area must be contained within one 1024x1024 grid block- Stock Half-Life 2 Content only

    - Only original maps specifically made for this contest (no recycling)

    - Focus on proper Deathmatch gameplay, this is not a 'scene' contest, but make it as pretty as you want

    From other entrants:

    Quote

Are we going to have a map core DM frag fest to test everyones work? Because its one thing to download these maps and rate them off pics and single player... and its something else to really play it and see the dynamic of what we build.

    Quote

Yes, exacly, it's what I was thinking. We need a server with all our maps and play them before any voting.

And the playtest seemed to be overall 'voted' for that we hold it on Saturday and Sunday to allow all people's to play (time zones, you know, the rest of the world an' stuff).

    So, k.

Instead of just voting on some screens. I gave a link, all the information needed to upload the maps to a test server so we could actually play them, because 1024 is going to be more about how you use the space instead of just a pretty looking screenshot.

But if nobody wants to do what we were talking about in the thread for the last month or so then fuck it I guess. Just don't expect me to go out of my way to set up any more servers and means of uploading your maps, just so some kids can not bother to pay any attention./

the guy with shades shooting people suggests there will be some retarded storyline in which you end up killing the 'bad guy' and thus giving some semblance of meaning or vision of an end to the war on terror: "look kids, there is a big ol' meanie out there and we can kill him just like in the video game!"

Maybe I'm too cynical but that's what I got from that sequence of events.

The russian/chechnyan (wouldn't it be funny if it was the same setting as INS except IW finished it xD) settings look very much like Stalker - and that's a good thing imho, they look great. Really atmospheric.

If this comes out on the PC I'll be picking it up, but I wouldn't trouble myself to buy a 3shitty just for a CoD game that doesn't happen to be set in 1945.

For all those that haven't finished or are about to upload a half-finished piece, I had an idea in #mapcore - instead of setting the deadline for sunday, why not just have the deadline set for an hour before the playtest - I mean there's no reason to cut it short if we aren't going to be able to test for a few days; and it gives people a chance to finish up their maps (it'd be a shame to miss out on some potentially great maps).

Just decide on the playtest. Some people mentioned the weekend would be best, and I have to agree - we set it for 2pm EST (7pm GMT, 8pm CET) and we should have time to get through the maps. The sevrer is going to have a timelimit of 10 minutes per map, so within an hour or two we should get through all of them.

Also gives people another week, until Saturday coming.

    Sound like a plan?

If you all agree, and you've already uploaded your map and you want to replace your map just say and I'll delete your current bsp so you can upload a new one.

when you look at the nukem character himself - you realise how childish and lame it really is - I hope they are not trying to make him cool, badass - or 'serious', maybe they've spent 10 years trying to make the character not such a total dickwad.

I like that idea - maybe a few of us should get together and make a small pack of textures and models and see who can do the most creative stuff with it?
