you want to remove pieces of the mesh - and leave the uv co-ords in place?
the co-ords are vertex dependant soonce you remove say, a triangle, the information for that triangle will be removed. You an create a new triangle and put it in there but it's going to need tweaking. If you are importing uv's then it's looking for names of vertexs not the general shape of the model.
I don't understand why you are trying to remove part of the mesh and keep the uvw co-ords. Are you rendering out some normal or shadow maps? If you just backup the file, delete the mesh, render the map out and then open it up the original file, etc.
Maybe you can post some screenshots of what you are trying to do?

I'll be honest, i think it looks fugly

The texture cutting on the bckgnd plane trees is horrible, and combined with all the sharp edges of the 'cliffs' it makes it look very choppy and sharp - almost as if you are looking at a bunch of photos cut up and put next together. And that's the other thing - photo textures = great, cool, etc, but at least make them a little bit .. less photo-looking?
dunno, I want to be impressed by it, but it's just not doing anything for me

big blocks, and make passes over the whole map - rectangle everything. next flesh out the basic building shapes, then go into more detail, add soem textures - pop in a few models.
or go the other route and make one section at a time, full with detail, models, lighting etc.
or give up.

mhm, muddy.

that's not particularly new or anything tho..

really sexy briscoe - love the ambience - because mapcore is all about finding something crap in something awesome: I think you should work on the rocks a little, they are too smooth and boulder-like, would be nice to get some more angry angles and mini-ledges on the rocks, if that makes sense.
looks beautiful though, great stuff.
