Oh they won't have to pay shit. It's the publisher who will have to, or will get sued, and will go bankrupt either way. As for these "developers" they can go back to working in their pub, there's no way in hell they'd ever get a job anywhere, or be published again by another publisher

  • Where are all the Level Designers?

I can actually say that I've yet to work with any level designer who's had previous mod experience. And in the 2 and a half years of experience I have so far, I've already worked with at least 30 different ones. Some are architects, others used to design engineering tools, some were fresh out of design school, etc etc. One of the guys demoing PoP at E3 starting tomorrow used to print his own comic. Anything goes it seems.

Basically, if one of them has a portfolio, he works as a level artist, not a level designer.

Interesting thread to read through.I think level designers are very underestimated in the game design industry. Environment artists get all the credit for making the awesome-looking models/textures, the people that make the game immersive through gameplay don't get as much credit at all.

However, it's the same with other mediums of entertainment, film/television script writers tend to not get a lot of credit, it's the actors and/or cinematographers that get most of the credit.

The problem is the wording of our job title. While it's clearly the easiest way to describe what we do, it's also a very specific job title you can't find in any other industry. The mass public has no idea we even exist. A 3D artist is a lot easier to sell as a concept. You're an artist, that's fine and you work in 3D that's good too.

However I've been told several times now by recruiters at the studios I worked at that designers are starting to be valued more for what they bring, and that the industry understands what a great designer brings to the table, and why it's important to keep them on your team.

Obviously for every one of these studios, there's the gazillion others who will pink slip you at the end of a project because they don't "need you anymore".

I think it also basically comes down to whether the work of a level designer is thought of as worth sharing. Level artists share their levels once they're completed, or even via screenshots because the "wow this is beautiful" factor is what everyone is going after.

With a level design, you can share it using the same method, but it needs to be experienced for people to have that wow factor. It's pure gameplay. So until you get that barrier out of the way, and we can all browse through a 3D version of the internet where a simple jpg can be rotated and "visited" or "experienced", you have no real clue how the design plays like.

I know, I'm dreaming with my eyes opened

Seriously, games cost too much. The whole process of creating a game is still too unoptimized and a lot of manhours go lost in a project by constantly redesigning and redoing things, thats the reason why a lot of games take so long and therefore cost so much, not because they were so terrible complex to create.

    Quote of the year. Amen

Wasn't Kojima (or MGS4's US associate producer) quoted saying the game cost 120 millions total in one of Kotaku's news? Don't know exactly what this figure comprises but if you look at GTAIV's rumoured budget vs a game like MGS4, it could reach that when all is said and done.

And spending 100 millions on GTAIV when it sells 6 million copies on the first DAY, which means it broke even on that first day after its release, that's something I can see tons of developers wanting to put their money on

You know each update you post has me smiling, but the butt logo was just too much I'm still actually giggling typing this. You have an awesome design right there, both the game and the merchandising. Please go all the way, take all the time you need, and release a gem. You've gone this far already, I want to see this game enter the IGF and win major awards

The history section is gone. I had thought about that Thrik, but in all honesty this is nothing LinkedIn couldn't tell you, so long as you know that person's real name, which usually is documented in the list.

I just think that this list is becoming unmanageable fast. This just isn't the right format for listing everything everyone wants. There is LinkedIn for the details, but as far as presenting the available freelancers and those in the industry, the best format to this day remains a spotlight gallery of sort. I'm not talking about the one we had for maps and other assets, but a directory of Mapcorians with their relevant info is ultimately what we should have. I'd love to have a full blown list with everyone and their favorite dog on the forums but in pure editing and presentation terms, this isn't exactly fitting.

Why do you want to prune it?

By pruning it I meant the 38 pages of replies. To look neat is as good an answer as I've got though.

Congrats guys, rock our socks off

I edited the thread with what info I had, regarding Skacky for example (no name) and took down the list of previous positions. It was hellish to keep uptodate and was just making the whole thing over the top. I'm thinking of pruning this entire thread, what do you guys think?

Klein and I went to see it last night and I must say it's entirely enjoyable, a lot more so than the latest Indy in its own right. It's got that B movie quality that doesn't take itself seriously. From the get go you're clearly not going to see something believable, which works better than so many movies that start out being believable and end up flat on their stomach by the final action scene.

And yeah that last fight has Equilibrium written all over it, with its own twist though.

yeah Treyarch is doing it, and got so much crap for it they must feel pressured by now. It's just amazing how CoD4 is so good that it developed a hardcore IW fanbase that automatically makes anyone touching the license go to hell.

Anyway, I wish Ubi would send me along as the PoP demo will be one of my maps, but someone else is going instead (another LD)

I have a Packard Bell Maestro 220W, they recently came up with the 221W which has a headset jack off the top of my head and maybe some other things. I'm very pleased with it, and that's what I use daily for my PC as well as the X360.
