Did you tried with brushes + smoothing groups? That should work better than a displacement or a model there.

Wow lighting preview, welcome to the future

Still have no clear if new Hammer features are usable in non orange box games/mods so there are 2 versions of each tool now. Someone can clarify?
QuoteBy default the SDK launcher will launch the Orange Box versions ofHammer, Face Poser, and Model Viewer.

Looks good (.dem?)
I don't even think is possible to use a dem for something as small as a dune. However maybe you know more than me about that

This was made from a dem:

Yes, I understand, but desert has an inner beauty to me, doesn't need anything more than a very careful displacement work. If you like desert as much as I do you'll enjoy this:

Models, of course. I made them as full train size for other map, rescaled them to match mine like proportions.

BTW, something great happened in our yesterday's test while we were playing peligro map. I even made a video

Can you believe a guy falls to the pit, he fires an arrow when is about to die in the lava, and that arrow breaks the plank where another guy was and he falls too?

Microsoft lying and spreading misinformation... as always
However DX10 is another step in the way to life like graphics, as big as DX9 was. Problem is the terrible Vista only decision, adoption should be much faster if XP was also DX10 compatible.

The lava map is really a blast of fun, we played last night and everyone enjoyed it a lot. It's not the kind of map you'd expect in a western game but who cares, FoF isn't a common western game

My last serious attempt to map was El Paso level if I remember correctly, around a year has passed. Well, I was feeling like some sort of voyeur in this site, where is dedicated mainly to level design and EOT (maps 10% / EOT 90%
). So here is some work I've made in the past 3 weeks. They are mostly finished, currently under testing, so no major additions expected except if it's something that can help gameplay in some significative way.The idea was to make a medium size map per week using the current assets available, most of them made by me too. Only created a few new ones, focus was level design properly said. Don't expect something very elaborated in terms of graphics, but each one has its own play style, perform good, and testers seems to like them
I'd like to improve texturing mainly, but I can't spend more time, and I also have no real skills to go beyond actual assets. Here they are:fof_tramonto_lite had a part previously done, so I continue it in a different way from the original plan. The only small achievement are the adobe buildings, fully made of displacements except the ceiling. It's a nightmare to get them with proper shadowing, but they have it.

fof_eliminator probably lacks of some more interesting displacement work and textures, I mean it's pretty serialized, with no variation. On the other side, it plays quite well, teams spawn at the bottom with no other protection than 6 seconds of invulnerability (the code also prevents spawning near enemies, or at least it tries). Spawn points are mixed so players must find some help from teammates and then work as a team to reach the top where objective is.

And finally, fof_peligro is probably the most fun map I ever made. It also has lots of fx's (smoke particles, lava rocks, earthquake, breakable wood planks, animated and scrolling lava texture). Breakable planks + explosive barrels + lava pit make a pretty funny combination
Again the rock texture is pretty much the same all over, brushwork is really simple, I was a bit lazy probably.[Blocked Image: http://img15.imagevenue.com/loc982/th_92038_fof_peligro0001_122_982lo.jpg][Blocked Image: http://img28.imagevenue.com/loc659/th_92044_fof_peligro0002_122_659lo.jpg][Blocked Image: http://img43.imagevenue.com/loc949/th_92032_fof_peligro0000_122_949lo.jpg]
That's all, FoF mod will be available pretty soon, hopefully.

Now you understand why XSI users like me feel marginalized from time to time. This plug-in is wonderful for a lot of things, even legal ones

-
This is new to me, a promo video of a level editor, even with background music. Looks like a commercial

-
Looks good but don't like at all the lack of imagination, it's a clone.
-
I feel like the game is too good to play it in medium-low settings. I don't know if I'm going to purchase it just for that reason. I started playing in medium settings, then changed to high and was hard to go back again, looked much better but framerate was crap.
Combat reminds a lot to Far Cry, yes, but much more realistic now. I hope the rest of the game has other innovative elements than the suit.
The engine and tools look great for those looking for new modding experiences. That's not my case, my gold age with Source starts now, just when I learned the damned engine and can code, map, model, even animate a bit.

Some ideas

A full bar in swap buffers usually indicates that the graphic card is running out of fillrate. Well, hope you aren't using integrated graphics
Specular + normal maps is an expensive combination if used extensively, even more when HDR is used too. It's a framerate killer. -
"No hard feelings"
I think portal is made of pure genius. This is an instant classic, gameplay, computer character, music (I love it, is like some Vangelis kind of score), credits, everything. The only problem is it seemed quite easy, well, maybe I got stuck for some minutes 2 or 3 times, but most levels were easy to complete, even the final in just one try. Still haven't tried the bonus maps, which appear to be harder. I'm also awaiting for the user made maps, I'm sure people will come with great stuff. -
The lowest one is ugly, looks like an unlighted Source level . Just hope I won't have to use that one. The extreme one I guess is just to impress people

-
There is a funny error when you try to place a prop_whatever in hammer and set a wrong path manually: it will crash. However this seems to be a completely different issue.
-
I downloaded it and is even better than in the screenshots. I love the river and those flying insects among other things. However CS:S is about a completely different gameplay. This map in a game like America's Army or similar would rock in popularity, no doubt.
