good post section_8! UML was kind of boring at uni for me, but maybe you get more into it because you work on a project while we only had a single semester with small exercises. operating systems is a cool course! i had it last semester and it was really interesting to get the basics of a modern operating system (no i am of course not talking of windows based systems!). learned a lot about process synchronization and file management.

i once worked on a flash based application in the old fashion way. highly procedural fucked up code. though AS seems to be a bit shitty for debugging, but it is a powerful tool once you got into it. this semester i have to work out an application of my choice and maybe i will make a small kids game. technologies are yet to be decided, but flash would be in consideration (besides Ogre which is maybe too complex, but we will see )

I know man, featuring sunlight and everything

even the graphics are better than in crysis! and everything gets rendered smoothly at unlimited fps!

edit: you know i appreciate everybody who puts going university above "the industry". it is so easy to get a job at a game company, but it is much harder to get a degree and become someone more important than the little prop artist or level designer!

that's why i go to university: to keep my self all possibilities related to my interests! i like graphics, i like programming, i like technology and making concepts. that's what my degree is about. being someone who is tough enough to solve many different problems.

anyway, wishing you all the best and probably we can once again have a party, because bielefeld isnt the end of the world

i cant help it, but somehow i am NOT impressed. this looks like a scene you throw together within a week. comparing it to what people usually post in finished work gallery this is pretty much nothing.

of course it doesnt look bad, but it doesnt look really good too. next time you should post into a wip thread and get feedback before you claim it final.

    for the future:

    - finish environments/levels

    - dont make them too dark

    - post your progress in WIP forums

    - spend more time on the level itself than on the thumbnails you post in the forums!

    greetings.

why don't you polish your portfolio and find a job elsewhere? if you are not happy with university, then i don't think it is good for you to waste the time there. a bad degree wont help you later. better get a good one or spend them time elsewhere!

keep in mind that a degree is something you do for your life, so it might be hard from time to time. later you can pretty much do what ever you want to.

my advice: shit on the girl, focus on university. throw your self into work and get something out of you. when you are 30 years old, got a nice job, a nice apartment, money, a car you will surely find lots of girls. there like 3 Mrd. around the world, so one might fit to you

    cheers!

and he's damn right. our history is one thing we shell not forget but learn from it - it should not be our f* word.

i have no problem talking about what happened, but in a todays political discussion those terms are totally inappropriate! especially when they are used to describe politicians. no matter which party!

maybe this will work out better for the ground stones. yours seem to be from a wall due to they where met in concrete. these are on a more sandlike surface and are much rounder.

i am currently busy with too many things. maybe this is a reason why i dont have a girlfriend. there were a couple of nice girls showing up in my life but somehow all turned out to be kind of bitchy. the last one pissed me off because i had this really DAMN hard exam at uni and after it passed i felt really bad because i didnt get the questions that dropped like 50% of the points. suddenly the next day i got a mail from the professor and he told me i got an A+ because i was the only student who actually tried to solve those excercises! i was super happy and told the girl. all she did was saying she hates people first saying "oh everything went wrong" and aftwards saying "yeah baby. A+" even they knew it would pass that way. in my case i didnt know and she was wrong. so it was the final sign to kick her off (after lots of different annoying situations).

as i told i am busy with lots of stuff: finishing a mapproject i have spending the last 16 month on, finishing my exams with good grades, fixing my car, working at home.

but life keeps good things up for me too! recently i was in piermont, italy, with my dad. usually i see him like 1 time in a month. so it was really nice to be around with him for a couple of days and go on an "adventure" of my families history. (short version: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldensians) they were forced to leave italy and settled down near Karlsruhe. My grandmother still got the Italian family name.

this week Arkane studios knocked on my door with a job offer which i had again to reject. after starting at uni i got quite a few job offers from big companies with cool games. so i am looking forward to finish my bachelor degree in next spring and then maybe give the industry a shot to save some money. maybe i will go for a master degree instead. thats a decision i did not make yet.

on a range of 10 points i would judge my life with a 6 to 7. i am healthy and uni goes well. somehow it lacks certain nice things like a girlfriend and less annoying things. if the map project will be a success the life rating would get a 15 out of 10! the thing i am trying to achieve with it is like a dream. even a bigger dream than getting into game industry (which is fairly easy if you once made a nice level or what ever). it is like a personal goal i wanted to reach ever since i first started a game editor

    A+ for this thread!

i got no Nintendo DS though i am talking of a project thaat can be done in like 4 months with two people! the one is me and the other is a girl that wants to focus more on the design (game and graphics). so a complex game like the Lego Star Wars for example is not what i would be aiming for. it has to be a small game. i just found a demo of something where kids can put together an alien with eyes and mouths and noses etc. that is what i would have in mind. so the kids can mess around with it and then save their layouts somewhere.

    thanks for the posting HP!

ok this might be a bit uncommon in communities where the big PIMPs post their normalmapped whatevers but i am serious:

do you have any favorite computer games for kids? i am talking of a possible age of 4 to max. 10 years. so not killing or evil games.

the reason i ask for is, that i am possibly going to make a gamedesign + implementation of computer game due to my bachelor degree at uni. so i was wondering if you have any experience with this casual genre and can recommend nice games.

i would prefer games that run on windows + mac (+ linux). i could live with windows only games too but this would reject my teammate from testing on her own.

    playable demos would be appreciated!

i found some "Janosch" themed computer games but as long as we dont own any trademarks this can only be considered for research matter.
