  • They Wonder Why People Don't Make PC Games Any More

    • hessi
    • January 14, 2008 at 5:48 PM

come on guys. you never pirated games? serious! i remember having a copy of hl1 and a keygen that allowed me to play on WON. some day my CD broke and there was this special offer where you get TFC and HL1 for like 40 euro (yeah thats like 2000 or 1999) and i finally bought it since it was such a great game.

but to be honest: i dont regret the pirating since most of those games were shitty. take tomb raider 3 for example. i didnt even play it through. i didnt even tomb raider 2 even i got the original. so the formula goes like: motivate people to buy a game and much more important MAKE GAMES THAT ARE FUN

crysis got nice graphics but i hear from several places that the game itself isnt that outstanding. so why should someone pay lots of money to not play the game through?

oh btw: didnt we have this topic like last year? those evergreens...

as you found out by your self:

8bit alpha sorting isnt supported by any current game engine. it costs lots of hardware and doesnt make it.

there could have been other solutions than just making it alphatested:

for example having 1 vtf and 2 vmt. 1 vmt without $translucent and the other one with $translucent. applying translucent material to the slime wouldnt destroy all sorting since the other polygons are "solid" for the filling algorithm. but this solution should only be done if you really insist on 8bit alpha since 2 vmt files equal 2 render batches. the more batches an image needs to be completly rendered the slower everything gets.

well i hope you never show it to her. this isnt really good. actually i suck at painting photorealistic, so i cant tell you what you could do better in which way. all i know is that this is nothing i would call "nice" or "beautiful" sorry mate.

painting is something that needs a lot of training and time. so i recommend throwing all you leveldesign stuff over board and concentrate either on leveldesign or painting.

as far as i remember they are generated from a normalmap. but they arent the same. google might help there.

shut up nexus. if you dont have anything to contribute, then just gtfo.

    hi carlos!

it seems you dont understand the principles of the "new" engine. you cant just convert a map. i strongly recommend to start new maps from scratch. the best resource for beginners is:

    http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SDK_Docs

there you can find beginner guides to the source engine. you can find lots of examples in the sdkcontent folder in your steam folder. for example opening some cs:s or dod:s maps can clear out many questions.

regarding the lights: a material (i am not talking of textures!) uses a certain shading mode. for example Unlit or lightmapgeneric or vertexlit. either type has a different effect on how the textures linked into the material get rendered. so if you want a certain material to be fullbright it needs to be unlit. so now you probably see why converting tools fail so badly: they dont know if a certain texture is ment to be fullbright or lightmapped.

this is possible since the beginning.

usually you need two maps: a dudv and a normal map. i think there are several examples avaible. best way would be to look out for a standard material in the gcf files and import it into photoshop / texteditor.

lets call it: games i already bought but still have to finish:

    • [*:1vk74emq]Super Paper Mario (wii)
[*:1vk74emq]Lego Star Wars 2 (xbox 360) - got to get to 100% and atm i completed like 61%
[*:1vk74emq]Crysis - i gave the game a 10 minute shot and then turned it off. so i actually didn't play it
[*:1vk74emq]Max Payne 2 (xbox) - started it and i got thrilled but then i got my hands back on lego star wars
[*:1vk74emq]Fable (xbox) - started it and i am getting pissed at the fight on the bridge. the stupid bitch always gets either more or equal frags.
[*:1vk74emq]Fable Lost Chapters (xbox) - didn't even start it once :S

i think it is decent for a first try. somehow her lips make me think "got milk". they are too white. another thing is that the nose is kind of floating into the cheeks. so adding a darker outline would really help.

the rest is ok from my point of view. i am not a big fang of scifi suits

i strongly recommend to check out my tree texture tutorial. my procedure is capable of being saved as an action in photoshop + is applicable on 1bit and 8bit alphas!

i couldnt access the forums since either the host or my provider fucked up :ssj:

well the church and the other side of the river are parts of the skybox. creating a seemless transition between church and game world was quite a bit tricky. since there were sorting and lighting problems on the displacement meshes. actually they are still present but i tried to hide them as good as possible.

got to make some changes to a door model since it blocks people when trying to run smoothly through. then there might be some closed testing phase and hopefully a release soon

so if you are working with a different engine, you don't have a SDK? holy shit. you can develop without any developer tools! thats awesome! :megamon:

i played the game a couple of hours. overall i would call it decent.

there is one big general flaw: it's too slow.

punching someone with the fists takes forever. it's so damn slow. even if you want to make a left - right combo you have to pull your arms back completely to be able to hit em with the other fist. that doesn't make sense. to make things even worse punching costs a lot of stamina. in my eyes punching shouldn't cost stamina since punching maybe costs "arm stamina" and running is "foot stamina".

the weapons are really slow. if i were a wild west redneck cowboy i'd reload a weapon much faster. you should speed up everything with like 50%

another thing that annoys me is the time bar that counts down when you captured money. if the bar has nearly been through and you capture another piece of money you have to start all over again. that doesn't make sense. another thing that pisses me off is that you can open boxes even when you dont look at them. to make it worse: you can even shoot while opening it! players should be either opening or fighting. not both at the same time.

this is just a few things that i would definitely change.

still i think it is a decent mod and i actually felt like i have to play it again some time. btw the sharps rifle is awesome

    Quote from e-freak

/*gerDieser Screenshot zeigt relativ flache Fassaden (zumindestens wirkt es so), wo alle Details nur aus der Textur zu resultieren scheinen (Bögen und Rosenfront usw.). Ich denke mal, dass JP das als "relies a bit too much on texture" meinte (vielleicht die Strukturen ausmodelln?)

    */

This Screenshot shows a flat wall (at least it looks like that), where all details are only represented in the texture (arches etc.) I think, that JP was refering to this when he was talking of "relies a bit too much on texture" (perhaps you could add geometry to these details.
