.....but really all the problems and issues and fixes are out there on the mailing lists, VDC, and forums. .......

Everytime I've shot an email off to someone at valve I've gotten a nice, long, helpful, and nice response.

well thats no excuse for fucking up so hard! i mean: of course there is ep2 and ep1. i understand that there might be different compiling technics, but why in gods name must it be in 2 different folders. the parameters are the same, the game engine can be derived from the source sdk launcher menu... what the hell do they need two different apps for? that way they fucked up all applications that relied on this folder strcuture. (such as the MEL script exporter)

regarding the email: my emails had always been answered in "one liners" or even more regular was no answer at all. so my point is fixed! they better stop jerking off and connect with their community again (at least the part that is still there)

  • Why Games Will Never Be Culturally Relevant

the basic difference is, that games are interactive while movies, books, art in museums aren't. games give a limited freedom while movies, books etc. exactly tell a story you have no influence on. probably this is why i preferred adventure games so much, because they had a solid story and there was only one way to get to the end.

but i agree on the fact, that games are harder to represent to the public. though i think most people don't even want games to be so famous since games have certain risks too such as social isolation (which is of course not always true). in any way i can live with games but i just see them as something that should entertain me and is fun to consume.

games usually don't criticize our society, but that's what most movies, books or art do/does.

so all we can do about is, is just wait in these forums and wait for somebody to read our rants, who has the ability to change things in business?

i dont know how may maps for the games we talked about are avaible, but lets jsut say there is a decent amount of maps that are played frequently and have a good quality. so dod:s comes with probably like 30-50 maps that are fun playing. of course the graphics can be cheap, but i remember some maps that still were lots of fun to play (dod_ludendorf bridge as an example). counter-strike:source probably has 100 or 150 good maps. some were really special ones like de_wanda for example. full custom content and shit. so an average map takes 4 months from start to end. weekends probably with 10 up to 20 hours work while the reglar work days might end up with 3 hours maybe. so thats at least 25 or maybe 35 hours a week! that amount times 4 for a complete month and again times 4 for the 4 months ends up with 400 or 560 hours. if you would recieve a low sallery like 15 euro an hour this makes saves each company at least 6000 euro per map. and even if certain maps look worse than others, this could be a realistic average. so valve saved approximatly around 180.000-300.000 Euro for dod:s maps. wouldnt this money at least be worth put into developing tools so those guys who work for 0$ are still motivated? Valve will loose if they don't change but as long as i followed the game industry every game developer came to a point where he totally fucked up. Atari, Westwood and many smaller companies (with like 10-20 employees).

would be even worse, if they wanted money for this crap.

i totally agree to briscoe. i seriously hope that valve will get into some disaster and have an epic failure so they would have to refocus.

btw i didnt buy or even play any of the orange box games. this whole region protection thing is also pissing me off. i dont want to screw my perfect "english" game account with any new localized games.

there are so many things that make me angry. Angry video game nerd 2.0!

Email Arkane Studio. They are a Source engine liscence owner and I know that some of their modelers use Maya... I can't mind that VALVe doesn't care about them !

actually they were faster than i would be be

i understand the argument that a developers doesnt change his tools when he is working with a running system, but since source is an engine that is distributed for many other projects and other developers, wouldnt it make sense to provide up to date exporters? since probably there will be some restriction that forces a developer to use newer maya versions (such as in my case windows vista, which is of course worth another discussion).

ok, let's get another discussion running! today is my 3rd day with c++ and i took a look into the maya API to get a hang of how things work. as an early simple project i wanted to write a simple SMD file exporter - no animations, just statics. after my first 3 days i completed a simple exporter that does what it was meant to do. the plugin is written for the Mac version of maya, but since i only used the ANSI and maya API it should be ported onto windows easily.

what does this have to with game devs and how they piss you off? well in my case: A LOT!

i got a new computer last summer. good stuff like quadcore, 4GB ram and so on. when you read 4GB ram everybody should now: ok so it has to be 64bit system. that's right. i used windows xp x64 for about a year and the driver support was horrible. so my new hope was windows vista since it is much wider distributed. sadly i had to notice that the new window system of vista fucks up maya 7.0. maya 8.5 works great on vista, but why the fuck is there no working exporter for SMD files avaible in maya 8? valve made a plugin for maya 7 and didnt even announce it. prall made some improved mel script exporter that was working great with maya 7 but since it was based on mel, it was sloe and finally didnt work well with complex file names and paths etc. now since the episode 2 update came avaible valve decided to fuck the tools up even more: they moved all binaries to sourcesdk/bin/ep1/bin. WHAT THE SHIT DID THAT MEAN? why is there no universal vtex.exe or studiomdl.exe? why should i care about that when there is a selection box in the sdk for selecting a game? so now the MEL scripts are not working. every user would have to change the mel code each time he wants to export between ep1 and ep2 based games.

i fucking cant believe it, how bad valve screwed the tools. the situation was bad already, but their behaviour didnt help at all. valve seems to ignore all rules of usability. they should spend some more time with developers and less time with jerking around with "new fancy web 2.0" stuff.

for me this has one consequence: no more levels, mods, models or anything else for this engine before the workflow is not working appropriately. and to be honest: if it isnt me, writing a new plugin, then there will be no plug in at all. this brings me to rage too: WHY DIDNT VALVE RELEASE THE GOD DAMN CODE FOR THE EXPORTER? people could recompile it for the newer API versions or make some changes so it works with the fucked up EP1/EP2 mess.

i am so mad right now. everything brings my piss to a boil! :ssj:

i just noticed you used the term "skinned" for "textured". skinning is attaching and weighting a mesh to a skeleton while texturing is... yeah drawing the textures and applying them to a uv set.

using the terms in the correct way doesn't let you look like a fool

i agree to warby. the lighting is all right. i hate to colorfull outdoor lightings.

in the first screen you have this light next to the door. underneath the ground displacement seems a bit unlovely. probably adding a sidewalk or some overlay as a transition to the house would add some nice detail. atm it looks a little bit thrown together.

anyway nice looking map. can't wait to get my hands on it.

good luck with your portfolio. i think you will definitly get in somewhere. the only question would be: where? Since i kind of became "anti-big-developer" (because of ignoring community needs etc.) i hope you find a nice company that keeps track with its community. in my eyes this excludes valve.

LIES!!! Cologne > Leipzig! just to prove this compare dod_leizpig and dod_kolsch...

oh and if you read again: EA = Cologne; EA = "Der Führer" of games. Since RTL will be located next to the "new" games convention the TV interest might be even bigger. Game related TV stations such as Giga and ESL TV get easier access too. Of course the east should benefit, but since the reunion is years ago now, there should be a bit more realistic view: a lot of people of the east leave the area. Even you left it! So why should the games convention stay there when even you quit!?!

Did you just compare EA to hitler?

yeah, since they are aiming for world domination what they say, it's gotta be done!

I quickly translated the german news, so our international readers can get the point.

    Quote

The games convention, europes biggest convention about video and computer games, will take place in cologne in 2009. This was reported by the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" this wednesday. The article said that the most important developers in germany came to the point, that they won't continue their contracts with Leipzig after 2008. Instead this happening should be located in cologne, the current location of the leading german publisher Electronic arts. Munich and Frankurt, which showed a big interest at the convention, didn't score (comparing to Cologne). The reasons for the relocation can besummed as a bad train/car/plane connection of Leipzig to other regions/countries and a limited area that gets covered by Leipzig. The contract partners of the "GC", "Leipziger Messer" and "Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungselektronik" (Association of Interactive Electronical Entertainment), didn't want to confirm this decision. Further discussion are being held and an official statement is expected for the end of february.

It's unclear if the name "games convention", that is owned by "Leipziger Messer", can be adapted by Cologne. Till today the owners are not willing to sell it. A temporary license for 3 years and 450.000 euro fee are in discussion, which seems to be too less for the "Leipziger Messer". The development of this trademark has a cost 6.000.000 Euro overall. The games convention from 2007, that attracted over 185.000 visitors, takes place on 20th to 24th august this year. Still in Leizpig

August statt. Noch in Leipzig.
