  • Mod a Weapon for HL2 ?

    • hessi
    • December 23, 2008 at 9:02 PM

well if you want to make new weapons that act different to the game itself then you want to make a complete mod, that everybody has to download and install. oh and by the way: for someone of your knowledge that might be too much at a time. you better start with replacing a default weapon. that's enough work for the first time.

writing a mod does require more programming knowledge and can't be learned by just reading a tutorial. so to keep frustration low: concentrate on arts OR programming.

a simple replacement model (visuals only) doesnt need any coding.

ally you need is a model that is attached to the default skeleton for the weapon you want to replace, export the model to an smd file, compile the exported smd with the animation smd files you decompiled to get the skeleton and ziiiiing. there you go. this is my a-z tutorial.

calling your self talented is kind of... yeah you know... out of place? let the others decide if you are talented or not. even if you are talented, you shouldn't announce it.

the trailer doesn't tell much, but it reminds me of finishing max payne 2 on my xbox

"making it completely secure." EPIC fail statement. No system can be called 100% secure because there is no way to prove it. Just because there are no free exploits available it does not mean that they could not exist.

Well, since Christmas is right ahead, i am curious what you buy or bought for your families and friends.

Hopefully those people don't read this thread at mapcore. I am sure mine do not

my mother is getting a new refrigerator since the old one broke and those beasts are fucking expensive. My dad will get an external HDD because his PC recently broke and i had to backup via USB 1.0 on MY old barely used linux computer (i got another one that is used more frequently). my sister will get a tshirt with some cool print. there is a store in town that sells all kinds of t-shirts with our beloved cartoon characters and goods of the 80s and early 90s. Probably i will go for a sesame street t-shirt. my girlfriend might get something colorful since she wears too much black (if it comes down to me). maybe i will buy a shirt for her as well but that wouldn't be too creative. i know a shop that sells a ring she would definitely love, but that one is kind of too expensive and the relationship might not be yet ready for such a symbolic gift.

so tell what is in your mind and make this a damn good christmas

i got an offer to develop games on the iphone, but since the lack of time i can't take that chance. anyway i think the iphone is somehow a first step for apple to get more into the gaming biz. maybe some developers get excited about the objective-c code language and all those frameworks that exist in the mac world.

About working in the USA: A former German colleague of mine recently moved to the US to work at a studio in LA as a character artist. He's 25 and doesn't have a university degree, that said, he IS amazingly talented, he has worked on games as well as movies here in Germany and got a kick ass portfolio. I'm sure the studio invested a lot of energy/resources in convincing authorities that he is the right man for the job. So in contrast to what the posters before me said, I wouldn't completely out rule the possibility of working in the states without a uni degree BUT you really need a lot of work experience and a company that is determined to help you in all visa related questions. Looking at the background information you provided, I'm afraid this case does not apply to you.

First and foremost get a clear idea of what you would like to do if you worked in games development. You said you code but you also like art which means you got a passion for level design? Woah slow down there, these can be 3 completely different things. Your favourite position would ultimately be a "tech artist"? All this sounds rather vague and unfocused, maybe mino can tell you how he ended up getting a position as "tech artist", but in general I would advise you to specialize in one discipline rather than trying to be the jack of all trades who doesn't stick out in one field.

i think i know who you are talking of

to be that asshole once again: somehow i tend to have the impression that people that don't have a degree or a low level degree are not as smart as i would wish them to be. there are exceptions but if you abstract this into a human resource guy perspective: there are two nearly equal good portfolios/artists. the only difference is the degree. the one has a diploma and the other nothing at all. a company that is focusing on money would probably pick the one without a degree and give less salary because they can nail him with the lacking degree. a smart company would pick the degree guy because they know that knowledge is a resource too and getting it into the company won't hurt at all.

in general: if you already started a degree, then finish it. for what i can say there are moments when i seriously consider not to work in the game industry because of multiple reasons that you might find out your self sooner or later. if you want to do something different later, a degree might be helpfull.

regarding indesign: i was once all about indesign for making my notes as exam preparation, but then i gave LaTeX a closer look and for what i can say: it's like all the way to go. you can get it for free and there is tons of addons and literature on the web. once you get a hang of it you can make professional looking documents in no time. save the money for indesign on something better!
