for two reasons i can't do that:

    1. the text should still be readable. if there are tiny fonts or lines they might become unreadable

    2. having lines over the font requires that i put an extra layer on top of every slide in my presentation software, because the theme is always the lowest layer.

    thanks for the feedback anyway

i made a theme for a presentation i will have to make at uni in a few weeks. it is about IT-Security, Hacking and Buffer-Overflow based attacks. i wanted to stick out with a non standard theme and go all the way for the " cliché". so green old school monitor showing text in green on darker green

    what do you think?

what's wrong with your IE Windows? Not cool On Topic: Gameplay sounds interesting, but i'm curious how to achieve something like that in hammer without exceeding all technical limitations?

i agree with texture tiling. (especially when you are using clone stamp in the texture so much). i suspect the texture to be blurry in close ups anyway. tile maps for the win!

wow this is so what you get drilled in at my university. i will try to make it short!

first of all the topic your are digging in is "human computer interaction". there exist tons of books and university courses on this. as for all university level books they are more abstract and don't give you a step by step "tutorial". the reason: the HCI topic is so complex that there never will be a best solution to a given problem. you always have to try out and throw away.

second: designing interfaces is not choosing colors. it is about how users and the system interact. specific visual (or auditive) artifacts might support this interaction while others don't.

for what i recall "Alan Dix" has written a good book on this topic. i recommend that you scrap your previous ideas and thoughts on what interface design might be like, since you will be surprised of how deep this rabbit hole goes!

i hope this helped a bit.

kameo was awesome! have fun playing it! the start was a little weird, but as soon as you start off near the castle and get the omnichron it will get a really good 3d platformer game (with a few RPG elements)

the paper i used as areference was called "Situational Learning in Real and Virtual Space: Lessons Learned and Future Directions"

imo the paper is poorly written and is not as critical as it should or could be. if you have trouble getting the original, then tell me about it. i just dont want to spread things that have copyrights.

as for my presentation i can surely hand it out to you, but maybe you would need the comments/explanations and you would need to understand german it consists of 9 slides that i would have to translate. and even after translation it would only consist of words that i use as a guide to speak. so my advice would be to read the mentioned paper. if you have trouble finding it, feel free to drop me a line via some instant messenger of my choice (see profile).

actually i hold a presentation on that topic and the conclusion was that games or virtual reality and learning will fail when thrown together. you have to keep in mind that learning is much more than reading or listening to someone. learning is something creatures do with all senses.

if you are going for motivating people to get into a certain topic then i would agree that games can be supportive. they would work as some kind of appetizer. covering abstract or complex concepts is hard to accomplish in a virtual world (at least with todays hardware, I/O-systems etc.).

i also think that when lowering the expectations games can be refreshing compared to classic school class based learning. on the other hand most kids will know "cooler games" so those educational ones will always have a bad taste (for example because the graphics are old). remember that a book can be used for like 5-10 years. a game usually looks like crap after 2-3 years. if it doesn't than think about the effort on creating it.

overall: educational games have no big market and i doubt that they ever will.

It would work with a commercial title (it's done all the time) but I doubt any company would be interested in spending money on advertising in a custom map. there are easier and better ways to make (more) money..

regarding my economics course at university online advertising in games is a new way that addresses a specific group of the society that is hard to catch via TV or classic adds. since this is still a new idea we have to wait for coca colas first adds in a game (not talking about games that were made for the purpose of being an advertisement product)

":1c4mi70f]And sure, a game artist / game designer salary is nothing extraordinary, but It's more than enough to keep you going. Besides, it's a matter of time until you grow up on the company's hierarchy and get a better salary.

but the one who started with 4x the salary than yours will probably earn still like 3x than you do (because he can be promoted too). so imo your only justification is that you don't want to live a life filled with goods. probably you might change your opinion some time later. maybe not.

hessi your metaphor breaks down a bit once you realize that "billions of people" (literally) are paying for beer every day @brisco yes i am also looking into selling assets on turbosquid and all their competitor websites in parallel.

billions of people buy computer games that consist of levels... (i still see the flaw you want to point me to)

reading this thread i saw several reasons why i don't make maps or 3d anymore. for my future i want financial security as good as possible. that's something the game industry does not (yet) offer. comparing sallaries of friends who started with the same degree i can say: the game industry is not half as good as for example the IT-Services landscape.

i noticed your donation button a few weeks ago and my first thought was "noone will donate."

custom maps are like free beer. everyone might enjoy it but nobody will pay for it (even though they might feel a bit guilty)

well i would never call myself elite. the point is: i have seen DOF/blur/"cheezy Photoshopping" in so many forums and each time the person seemed to shift the attention away from basic mistakes in content and scene creation.

i don't see a point in posting orange map screenshots in a forum. if you want critics to a concept, then the deal that matters is a playtest and not stupid screenshots. if he wanted to test some effect then this would be better sorted into 2d forum and not 3d/level design.

no intention to say that anybody is a loser here!
