Quote from Thrik
It's seriously time to cut your losses and move on to another engine D3. It's been almost two years since Half-Life 2 came out now.Do you plan to work on stuff for completely obsolete engines for the rest of your life, always staying behind the pack? It seems really daft to me to waste time on an engine that is pretty much incapable of impressing anyone nowadays. Even Nightwatch's visuals paled in comparison to pretty much anything on Source, even if they were incredible by HL1's standards.
I mean I don't know if you're planning to work in the industry or anything D3, but spending all your time on an almost completely irrelevant engine doesn't seem like the best way to go about it.
I do want to get into the industry one day but not yet, I want to make something really good for HL1 whilst trying to dabble with source on the side, and then move on eventually. In all the 8 years I've been into editing HL I've not got a lot to show for it apart from three MP maps and a load of unreleased Sp content (stuff that I should post about sometime).
The problem with source for me is that if you can't model you're restricted with the content you can produce, with HL most stuff is easily made out of brushes but if you do that in Source it looks terrible due to the higher standards, plus there's so much more work to do even the Doom 3 engine is easier to work with... First thing I need to do is reinstall HL2 and get Steam working stable and then we'll see about editing after that.
Really I'm still just having fun at the moment.

It isn't *dead*...
-
It looks excellent, though surely it would be better to have the items as physics props so that they fall about when you knock into them?
-
I still work with the game as it's much easier to pull things off over Source except for the obvious technological nacks and physics engine. As for it being 'dead', people are still churning out content for the game in small doses, Hell Quake/Quake 2 are still going, of course you hardly ever see anything come out but that could all change as I know several people polishing up some projects. Fuck, Kingpin still has a healthy fanbase as well, lots of new DM maps released on a regular basis. I don't believe you can ever call an engine dead, unpopular perhaps but not dead...

I've probably got thew playtime wrong, I mean with it being so hot here I had to keep giving the computer a rest 'cause it kept beeping most likely due to overheating, mostly two hour sittings and then a rest. Perhaps 14 hours is more like it...

Keanu Reeves has the acting skills of a banana, other than that though it looks ok...

Rather than crowd up the other thread I thought I'd make a new one.
I've just got done with it now, again the following contains spoilers:
First of all whoever said it takes 6 hours to complete is a dumbass, it's taken me about 18 hours to get through! The game was is a bit dull at the start after you've been picked up from the Roadhouse, but it got better and is really fun later on and while the new gameplay features are just clever gimics, they work very well with the narrative. I especially liked it when you had to hit a switch to lower a lift get on top of it and use spirit walk to cross over a chasm and produce a new portal to teleport back to the switch, simple but cool.
I found it a bit lame how if you used spirit walk sometimes, panels in the wall appeared so you could get to supplies, it would of looked better as a hole in the wall with some of that blue stuff around it. The weapons were good, it didn't bother me that there were only 7 weapons because they were all interesting enough as they were and you never really missed any others (well maybe a rocket launcher
). Enemies were ok, I especially liked some of the later floating things and the guys that looked a bit like the fat zombies from Doom 3, I liked to whack the mutated humans and run away a lot, they're always confused when you do that
The bosses were pretty damn good, I loved the first boss fight, the way you cut his arm off and got the gun was nice and inovative, the other ones such as 'JenX' were good too, it took me ages to figure out that I had to destroy those purple things though! Speaking of bosses, I liked the way they produced this character of 'The Keeper' and then later on you find out that even though you destroyed him, there was more than one and you would never have seen it coming. Vehicles were nothing special, but it was always fun to fly about shooting robots.
All in all excellent game with a pretty satisfying ending after all the carnage for once (although I don't understand why the bar appeared in the sphere about a quarter of the way into the game and then it's back untouched... eh?). It's not going to win any prizes for originality and it certainly doesn't redefine shooters but it was damn good while it lasted.
I give it a solid 8, about the same as Quake 4.
PS: Right at the end, there's 'Prey will continue', perhaps we'll see a mission pack? ...or maybe a sequel...
PPS: Needed more ghost children imho too!

I got the full game 'cause it was selling for £30 + Serious Sam II and an art booklet for free. Did anyone else get a booklet? It's got loads of concept art and renders in it like the HL2 Raising The Bar book, though it's a tiny thing..
Omg I noticed that they had Judas Preist on the jukebox in the Bar, I love that song

Ok I couldn't resist, I went through all of the bar level and a bit more, excellent stuff, the level of interaction is cool, I like the way your hand appears whenever you touch something and that tv is just amazing. The bar fight was kinda funny, 'you coulda killed those guys!' Looks like I pretty much did and a few blasts to the head whilst unconcious will certainly do that

Had to post this:
