Why even ask? It's easy to hate Portugal, especially if you're Dutch. You don't remember the last game between Holland and Portugal?

I'm landing in Dublin. Anything there in particular, some hidden treasure perhaps that only few know about? All google gives me is some penny something bridge that doesn't seem all that impressive

Like Chris said, the distortion's really noticeable, and i don't like it. A lo-fi sound only works well (i think) for indierock songs and stuff like that. With classicalish music it just sounds weird. As for the song itself, it's a good start and i guess it'd work well for intros but i did find it a bit boring. Not enough variation (chords seem to stay the same). What i do when i compose songs like this and i want to keep some pianoriff going is change the bass every other (couple of) measure(s), it's an easy way of keeping your audience interested, you can lift tunes up and take the atmosphere down and all. I put something together quickly to show what i mean (link at the bottom). Besides that i always add something offbeat to the percussion to put accents (in the example track, right before the bass lifts the song up). If i'd work out this song i would keep the cymbals going after that i guess. Finally, the piano that comes in at times seems kind of random, but then again, it might work really well combined with the actual intro/ title and you'd probably have to rewrite some parts to fit it anyway. I do like the string section. One idea i got when listening to it is that it might be cool to alter the staccato way of playing with a more fluent way, like Beck did when covering Suzanne with his record club (link at the bottom as well).
Oh and finally finally, welcome to mapcore!
While this is mainly a mapping forum, every decent game needs some music at some point so your expertise comes in handy i bet. There's some good musicians around (Kleinluka for example) so you're bound to get some useful feedback.1) *Soundcloud just won't let me upload anything and it's nice weather so i gave up. I can email it to you if you want, or if someone else wants to upload is somewhere i can email it to them. Just let me know.

Then of course there's a huge difference between 'that's a good idea' and 'obligatory'

If you throw and oldschool HL1 competition even I will start up ye olde Hammer again. Maybe it's an idea to limit the challenge to old HL1 material only (skylines, textures, models)? No custom material

Just read it, and ("I'm surprised anyone is granting it any credibility at all.") feel a bit gullible even though i had my doubts. Wanting to believe is a strong force within anyone eh?
Still, even though the guy who wrote the article you're referring to sounds pretty credible it's one man's word against the others, so i guess i'll hold still for a while and wait until this settles down. I do hope however the credible-sounding guy turns out to be some kind of internet troll and this is genuine -
I love it! The plants look really out of place though

Quote“The exciting thing is that they are in many cases recognizable and can be associated very closely with the generic species here on earth,” said Hoover. Some of the fossils, however, are quite odd. “There are some that are just very strange and don’t look like anything that I’ve been able to identify, and I’ve shown them to many other experts that have also come up stump.”In order to satisfy the inevitable hoard of buzz-killing skeptics, Hoover’s study and evidence were made available to his peers in the scientific community in advance of the study’s publications, giving them a chance to thoroughly dissect his findings. Comments from those who decided to sift through the evidence will be published online, alongside the study.

Extremely awesome. It'll probably still take ages until we ever find a single live alien, but i can't wait to put this in the face of some fundamentalists

That's actually a very good point man!
One of the many reasons people play games is to cheer up and feel good, and dark, foggy or rainy environments don't really help with that.
that's probably why zombie games or games in which people have to kill other people aren't popular?

Maybe remove that glowing sunrise / sunset altogether. Put your thumb over it and look
I like the colors better and it'd also solve the problem of too many things to look at in one picture (which unfortunately makes sure nobody is really looking at anything in particular) -
I don't have the game, but i am a musician, so, if you post the song separately, i'll at least give you feedback on that.
