Sucks man. Wish you good luck and a quick recovery from the surgery.

I know about the breast cancer that men can have. I actualy went to the doctor once because my nipples were swollen and hurt. The doctor then checked my balls because it can be a symptom of testicular cancer.

My nephew also was recently diagnosed with a tumor one of his testicles. Turned out to be a harmless cyst tho. Was really crap the few days we had to wait for the results and didnt knew if he has cancer.

I'm a bit sceptical. Trackmania is longtime motivating and succesfull for two reasons a) because it's damn fun to drive b) because of unlimited new tracks created by users. For a fps i would say it's easy to mess up either the gameplay or the map making. I'm not even sure the typical fps player wants unlimited maps. For most games you see them play the same 2-3 maps over and over again.

Would have prefered them to focus on Trackmania 2 which is a wasteland player wise because unlike TMU it doesnt have a free version.

While looking at a lot of the levels you all have created its easy for me to think "wow, I can never accomplish that" and get discouraged, though I know I can do good work if I focus.

Don't let awesome work intimidate you. When you have the talent and know how to use the tools it's only a question of patience and determination to make something similar.

Rome wasn't build in one day neither are nice maps. It's the end result of many interations. Learn to work like a painter. Start with the broad strokes then add detail layer by layer. Just never give up even if it takes months or a year to finish.

":2ft6txtj]I would call underrated, a movie that is bellow 7/6 on IMBD. I have a tendency to never watch anything bellow 6, but if someone tells me it's good I'll open an exception, hence why this is actually a useful thread.

I think these tend to be the "crap movies that i like"-kind. Underrated to me means something of value that didnt get the recognition that it deserved for various reasons. You'll find there are many movies with 8 or higher average on imdb that not many people watched.

A movie with a 6 isn't underrated if that rating reflects upon the actual quality of it.

What exactly constitutes an underrated movie? For some it seems to mean a mediocre or crap movie that they personaly enjoy.

Personaly i would go with movies that have merits similar or better to a much more well known movie but only get a fraction of the attention.

    Examples:

The Magnificent Ambersons - Directed by Orson Welles one year after Citizen Kane but imo a better and much more enjoyable film. CK has over 167k ratings on imdb. TMA only a little over 10k.

The Asphalt Jungle - Just as good as The Killing with much of the same cast but doesnt get the same attention because it wasnt directed by Stanley Kubrick. (32k ratings vs. 10k ratings)

Same here. Only played the first couple missions. The "story" feels really disjointed and the controls clunky. Does it get better?

i've finished my tv series backlog after this... and there's no decent tv series currently airing. recommendations? (some favorites/already watched are breaking bad, deadwood, the wire, boardwalk empire, rome, battlestar galactica and sopranos). no sitcoms please.

Mad Men (similar to Sopranos and Boardwalk in terms of drama but no gangster stuff, instead lots of drinking and smoking)

The Tudors, The Borgias (both similar to Rome but set during the renaissance and a little more on the realistic side)

Game of Thrones (also similar to Rome but with some fantasy attached)

The Shield (similar to The Wire, Sopranos)

You sure about that? I don't know many people who have seen Fear & Desire or Killer's Kiss.

I watched two soviet war films over the weekend, Ballad of a Soldier and The Cranes are Flying. D3ads you need to check them out!

They are two of the finest art house films in existance. Especialy in The Cranes are Flying the cinematography is simply outstanding. I would consider it one of the most artisticaly pleasing films that i've seen.

Oh, how misleading — they had a massive colourful logo during the credits and everything.

Yea. It's the same company but they are more of a multimedia content provider nowadays. But it's true if any game comes close to the technicolor look it's the Uncharted games. They are very colorful indeed.

I don't know how relevant this is because I'm not familiar with colour correction technology in games, but Uncharted 3 had a large 'Technicolor' logo during the credits.

They do the sound design for them.

Bring back technicolor and real stages instead of this blorange cgi crap we have nowadays!

It's interesting that you mention it because i had this in my mind for a while that a game that emulates technicolor would look absolutely fantastic. Chromatic Abberation is a step in this direction since it somewhat emulates the color bleeding which is typical in technicolor. But the color palletes and contrasts themself would have to be different. Don't know how easy it would be to realise from a technical side since technicolor also uses CMYK instead of RBG colors. One could try with color grading to emulate technicolor but i think the reason this doesn't work well is because it essentialy destroys color information from the spectrum instead of adding to it. You end up with some shitty hipster vintage filter effect.

Tried to watch Tron Legacy last night but gave up halfway through.

Why? It's a stupid movie but looking at the visuals and listening to the sound i found inspiring as an game artist.

  • How are you supposed to judge artwork?

    • Steppenwolf
    • December 14, 2011 at 1:22 PM

You can judge art from a perspective of craftsmanship but that is only part of it. Things that also need to be taken in consideration is how well it does in transporting emotion, telling a message or a story and the context of culture and the time it was created in.

Ultimately your judgement of art is completely subjective so just follow your heart. Some people get eyegasm from looking at a Pollock painting, other people don't consider anything art that wasn't painted by Rembrandt.

Me personaly if i had to judge game art from an intellectual perspective i would weight the story telling of Portal 2's environments more then the photo realistic and technicaly superior jungle environments of Crysis as an example (since both games were mentioned before). Reason being that i find it creatively more challenging to come up with something like Portal 2 environments then to recreate something that already exists in the real world.

I watched The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa a few days ago. It was great action/adventure with lots of comedic moments. Film was a big influence for George Lucas when he wrote the Star Wars script if you didn't know.
